sorry mate but to call an injury ravaged and on the decline gaizka a flop is just wrong. you obviously don't know the man who fucked europe alongside claudio lopez and the rest of los ches.

Oh, but I remember him too well ... Sold to Lazio in the summer of 2001 (at the age of 27) for €48 million, loaned to Barca next summer, and then sold by Lazio to 'Boro in the summer of 2003 for €3.5 million ... If you look for the biggest flop of the past decade, Mendieta is definitely the one ...

I'm sure someone will come up with stats to prove me wrong, but it always felt like Jack Wilshere never really lived up to the hype. Not a flop, but nothing close to what we were told he would be.

Barneylfc: I went back to the start of this thread when I saw it had been bumped and read the earlier posts. I saw the Benzema one and laughed. I hope no money was placed on that opinion.

Take your pick...

Berbatov to United for £30m (9th most expensive transfer of all time)
Robinho to Man City for £32m (7th most expensive transfer of all time)
Shevchenko to Chelsea for £30m (10th most expensive transfer of all time)

Haha, an absolute work of art.

Ousmane Dembele. There’s a lot of players up the top of the all-time transfers list whom you could name but this guy’s career is something else. Hasn’t even reached 100 career goals yet, after a decade upfront for Dortmund, Barcelona and France.

João Felix.

One season at Benfica sold for over a €100 milion and has pretty much been average since, he'll be playing for Celta Vigo in 2 seasons time.

That’s just listing transfers that didn’t work though.  We’re looking for career flops, players who were supposed to be *it* but never produced at all.  Guys who appeared with incredible stats on Fifa, but didn’t back it up in real life.  Got to give Adnan Januzaj a mention here, he was getting amazing reviews a decade ago but afaict hasn’t hit thirty career goals yet.

Kaka

A few hyped players that sort of fizzled out...

Gabriel Barbosa
Luciano Vietto
Max Meyer
Gerard Deulofeu
Alen Halilovic

Barbosa especially as he was supposed to be the better of the two Brazilian Gabriels.  Deulofeu playing for Everton and Watford though is desperately sad for saying he was really hyped when he made his Barca debut.

La Massia wonderkid tipped for massive things who made his Barca debut at 17. Never really kicked on and was sold to Roma at age 21 (for €12m with a compulsory buy-back clause to trigger after 2 years that Roma would need to pay another €28m to cancel).

Did little there and loaned to AC Milan for his second season. Roma were happy to send him back to Barca for a small profit, per the clause.

Loaned to Ajax, who declined the option to extend the loan.

Sold to Stoke (!) for £1.8m in 2014. Flattered to deceive and was loaned out to Mainz and Alaves before Stoke binned him off.

At aged just 28, signed a one-year deal for Montreal.

They let him go and he joined Vissel Kobe, who similarly dumped him.

Officially retired aged 32.

There was a £50m sex pest at Abu Dhabi that barely played, and a nonce at The Pit that cost about £40m and didn't play once in the last two years of his contract, that's what I'd classify as a flop.

Seeing John Bostock play for Notts County piqued my curiosity in his career path.  Made his Palace debut at 15.  Moved to Spurs and was their youngest player ever.  Ended up with a series of loans.  Ended up being released after those spells and played in the Belgium second division and French second division.  Did have a stint at the top level in Turkey and France before eventually ending up back in England.

You feel bad for a lot of these guys because it comes down to the fact that nobody really 100% knows what the collection of skills necessary for a top player really are.  Like with that group at Dundee Utd, the excitement was all about Ryan Gauld but it’s Robbo who had the elite career.  Most people would have taken Lukaku over Giroud, most of the time, but when it comes down to it Giroud can play at the highest level but Lukaku can’t.  We had a good group of youngsters a few years back but only Trent made it.

TBF Kaka was a flop at Madrid considering he cost world record transfer and didn't live up to the hype.

Personally,

I would put Pogba and Slabhead, high up the list. Not only did they cost a fortune(both record transfers), the sunk cost fallacy(and their monstrous wages) wrecked the Mancs for years. They couldn't offload them and kept trying to build a team around these two, despite them playing like shite.

If you're into light reading there's a good book that covers Bostock and about a dozen other "wonderkids" whose careers faltered for a variety of reasons: https://www.wsc.co.uk/book-reviews/the-next-big-thing-how-football-s-wonderkids-lose-their-way-by-ryan-baldi/

There's a chapter on one of our own as well; Adam Morgan.  It's a few years old now though which is where Wiki is always great!

fucking can't stand him at all, but Stan Collymore anyone?

Saw this on page one and couldn't agree at all. Stan performed at Forest and us and at Villa, his problem was more mental/off field issues that held him back, as when he was on the pitch, he was excellent. His first season here, him and Fowler were an oustanding partnership, they destroyed teams, scoring for fun. He wasn't a flop, he just didn't make the most of his talent

Agree totally about Collymore off field issues and probably poor management/coaching didn’t get the best out off him.

He had a bad ankle injury when he was about 19, the kind where you do well if you are able to walk normally afterwards. He did well considering, joints like the knee and ankle will always cause issues down the line, it’s worse than a leg break in many ways
