  • Super Title: Does the M in Milton stand for Moron?
I never feel like we play well when we aren't just marauding forward with reckless abandon. We don't look comfortable or in control. This game is awkward as fuck.

We should be very confident that only a complete disaster puts us out, but I'm going to walk through the negative scenarios, knowing that the odds are still strongly in our favour.

I often find that players are unable to put out of their minds what the scoreline is and what is required for to kill the tie. Our players need to realise that a goal at virtually any point in the game destroys City's chances. If they don't I feel there is a good chance we sit way deeper than Jurgen will want us to. Its just human nature. We saw it in the second half last week. Jurgen screaming for our players to use the ball wisely and move the line up. Instead we sat deep and hurled low percentage long balls up from defence, completely bypassing the midfield, and not giving our defence time to push out. There is a high risk we do that either right from the kick-off or not long after if City get any pressure on us.

The impact of the first goal. Of course if we score it, then the tie is essentially over, but if City score it, and particularly if they get it inside the first 25 minutes, can be huge. I have seen our team and others, drop even further when defending a big lead. We saw it against Sevilla twice this year, handing the inititative to a team with momentum and the quality of players that can punish. Two or three goals can come quickly from this city team, we know that from earlier in the season, they can swarm you.

Should we adopt a different approach? I refer to my original point. We are not that good at anything but all out attack, and so far this season, that approach is the only one that has had success against city.

So lets just go at them, and lets hope that our players don't care what happens at the wrong end, and just keep hammering at City even if we are 1, 2, or 3 goals down. The only number that really matters is how many goals we have.

Defending a lead within a game and defending a lead from a first leg are vastly different.

we are not going to sit deep and defend. Our approach will be the same to start the match. Klopp was very specific about his past experience i.e losing the first leg against Real 3-0 and winning the return leg 2-0 in Dortmund.

No way do I see him changing our approach to the match.

This game's going to be about the midfield. 90 mins of our midfield 3 holding a line just on the edge of the box is a recipe for disaster. Get at them higher up the pitch and their likely back 3 will have no chance against our front 3. Score draw for me.

We should target Otamendi.  The amount of internal self-abuse is written on his face every time he gets beat.  His only solutions?

1.  Dive in and pray
2.  Foul the fuck out of everyone
3.  Spring forward on corners to make contact with ball to hit his meathead

For me, intelligent play exploits his problem with aggression.  He might be the softest hard man I have ever seen play in the modern era.

There is no way we are sitting deep and defending. At least not for about 60 minutes. I expect them to come out flying in an attempt to get the early goal and get the crowd going. The first 15-20 minutes will be key and we must keep concentration levels high. The thing is they have to play at a very high tempo from the off as they’re the ones who are 0-3 down, but while they do that 2 things are going to happen. Firstly, they will get tired (they looked really leggy against both us and United late on) and secondly they will leave large gaps at the back. Because of the way we play coupled with these two things I can’t see how we’re not going to score.

I’m fairly confident we’ll go through. The clean sheet has changed the dynamics of the second leg. If we had won 3-1 at home I would have been a lot less confident.

I think we should go for the kill from the off, everyone keeps going on about 1 goal killing this, we score in waves against these, 2 or 3 really kills it. Sadio, Bob, Salah and the Ox have too much for them, they've shown it twice already. I'm feeling really confident about this, and i'd love to see us get 1 or 2 early and just watch them completely collapse.

If you can't hold onto a 3-0 lead from the first leg against a side you've beaten twice in the past 3 months then you aren't cut out to win the Champions League. Providing we don't go down to 10 men and play properly we should advance.

We're unlikely to stop City scoring but they're also unlikely to stop us scoring too. A shootout favors us of course. I am stupidly calm about this. We will have to withstand some pressure and they're probably going to score but we must stay calm if and when they do. An early goal from us kills it as a spectacle.

As others have mentioned the squad is pretty thin at the moment.

We go there with Moureen park the bus style?
Two defensive / holding midfielders and can say below 40% chances of City can penetrate from the middle perhaps?
Like it or not they have to depend heavily from their flanks, both sides.
They cant even do it in the second 45 minutes at Anfield, where we were showing almost ZERO attacking intent.
Force them to go much harder way from the flanks. Let them penetrate / slicing from the middle and we are f**ked.

p/s: And after watching the Everton game, please - avoid any injuries to let us cruise stronger in both league and European fronts.
Like a warzone or something, battle of attrition in the lloooonnnggg run.
It's really dreadful if we are facing both fronts with a depleted squad left with just our bare bones and half-baked semen. Just avoid injuries please.

I think Salah will ok. If not I think Ox will be pushed in to the front 3 and TAA in midfield with Clyne at right back.

Exactly what I've been telling myself. I believe we'll make it but we need to on our game throughout the whole game, City have all the tools to score a lot of goals. Absolutely buzzing for this.

Think you got that confused. Dortmund beat Real 4-1 and lost the return leg at the Bernabeu 2-0 and were 1 goal away from going out on away gaols. We need to go all out to score one goal. I think we will get beaten in the match. Think we will lose 3-1 or 3-2 which will see us through comfortably

Nothing worse than 3 - 0 up in first leg. ;)

We just need to score and keep the tempo up and not waste possession too often.

I hope Mo plays and we score before HT

Our back 5 looks very settled with

                   Karius

TAA   Lovren     VVD    Robertson

Just need to sort midfield out without Hendo and Can, probably will be

        Ox       Wijnaldum   Milner

Solanke and Ings  ;D

They shouldn't be starting in a Europa League group stage match against HNK Rijeka, let alone a second-leg CL quarter final against Manchester City. They were both awful against Everton. It would effectctively mean that we would have to defend for our lives for the duration of the match as they'd offer almost next to nothing up top.

My brother... Thats my point. Haha!! Just stick them up top the whole, the whoooollleeee
f**kin game - glued to Kompany and Otamendi so their back line cant push forward...
While flooding the midfield means we are slowly strangle the life out of the game, park the bus
slightly outside of the dangerous zone (DO NOT play it around our own box - mind this
important rule), bore the game to death, pass it between us protectedly and safely with
two defensive / holding midfielders, and simply said - it's never going to be a climax
or finally-cum to City. Never. It's really fun to watch them hopelessly, living an empty
dream at second 45-minutes at Anfield like trying to breach the Great China Wall...
Repeat, that was a really really professional show and great performance in second-half
at Anfield for me... Like building an invisible wall and keep frustrating. So fun to watch!

p/s: Yea, lets do our part first, like get a first goal first... 0-1 and they need 5 for sure.
Then I dont mind parking the bus after that.  :D Make it ugly for them.

...Those moments happen. The rarity of them happening is what makes them so special. But the part for us to focus on is the rarity. 95% of the time once a side gets to the point we are at now, the second leg is about getting over the line...

The reason a 3-0 score is 95% certain is probably because it typically represents clear superiority of one team over the other. I would guess the 5% are situations like ours where the teams are more evenly matched.

Keep Firmino in the middle, Mane to the right and Injury permitting, Moreno on the left as a winger in Mane's position. Our attacking threat will have to come from Mane's side. Firmino in the centre is critical to our press. My concern is that Moreno is not fit in terms of practicing the drills nevermind being ready for the game.

No early goals for me either way - if they get it-they will generate hope, if we get it - we may become complacent and the match may open up like a basketball match. See our game against Dortmund. The longer it stays  0-0 the better. Score an away goal midway through the 2nd half to take the lead, all hope is gone and the match will peter out with their fans leaving and the player's heads dropping.

Think we need to play with our heads.

It’s imperative we keep eleven men on field at all times so no risky tackles.

I am convinced he goes 3-5-2 so there may be spaces in behind like there was in league match there.

With Liverpool fans snapping up the general sale tickets and man city's owners fans selling off their tickets, it's possible half the stadium will be Liverpool fans. There are tickets still available on man city's official tout site. What a horrible plastic club they've become.

I expect man city to have a go, they are after all the greatest football team to ever play the game according to their own fans and manager. They'll be playing right into Jürgen's hands. We get our greatest success from playing against teams that come out all guns blazing from kick off.

Bring it on.

It's so important we keep our heads. I doubt the atmosphere will be anything like the first leg, but no rash tackles early on as going down to 10 would be a disaster.

The first few moments in the game are key too I think. If we can string a few passes together for a minute or so, establish some sort of tempo to the game and avoid any backs to the wall stuff it will help.

Hopefully Pep persists with a high line at the back and we can try a few balls from defence to attack to put the fear of God into them.

I'm trying to take comfort from knowing that we could be 4-0 down and still score and go through but I know I wouldn't survive that scenario. I'd settle for 0-0 at half time and take it from there....
