+ ESPN: Maguire will make Man United title contenders

===========================

Pep Guardiola says he is expecting Harry Maguire's imminent arrival to transform Manchester
United into title challengers after watching his Manchester City side strike an early blow over
Liverpool in the Community Shield on Sunday.

City and Liverpool finished 25 points clear of their nearest rivals last season during a thrilling
Premier League title race that was decided by a single point. But Guardiola believes the pair
will not be as dominant this year -- particularly after sources have indicated that United
have beaten City to a deal for Maguire.

Asked whether Maguire was good enough to turn United into contenders, Guardiola said:
"Yes. He is an excellent, top-class player.

"We were interested but we could not afford it and United can afford it.

"He made an incredible World Cup, strong in the air, good with the ball and drives with
the ball so fast. He has all the qualities to work for United. Congratulations to United for the signing."

Ferguson once said you couldn't lose more than five games if you wanted a credible title challenge; with the advent of City (and our experience in 08-08) I modified that to not losing more than three games and drawing more than five.

City have already lost two and drawn one. The loss of key players has taken them from an incredible team to a par team.  The introduction of VAR has, so far, hurt them more than us.

We've won our first eight games with our back up keeper.  It all points to how critical squad management will be for us this year.

We will need this lead because at some point City will start to reel  us in. But even when they get those players back, City will still have dropped those points, and they dropped points last year with those players available.  Beating them is crucial ho keeping them in their box, and we know it can be done.

Teams will continue to roll over for City, especially when their injured players return. But I'd feel embarrassed as a United fan if I thought my team rolled over for a rival who lost to Wolves. ;D

It is his pathetic way of trying to put 'pressure' on us  ::)

At around 4:50pm or thereabouts on Saturday, it seemed extremely likely we would 'only' be 3 points clear by Sunday evening. To be 8 ahead is a crazy bonus at this stage. I'd prefer not to think about the league after so few games; mainly because I don't want to be a nervous wreck for the next 30!

I actually thought when he said this that we’ll reach 21 before they do. They’re rebuilding will take years. The club structure seems wrong from top to bottom right now.

I presume when saying that he’s banking is not winning it under Klopp (desperately praying that City win it). He then thinks as and when Klopp goes we’ll fall back to the pack and he’s hoping by that time United might have stumbled upon someone competent both to manage the team and to manage the transfers. There’s a lot of reaching going on but he’s not claiming this current United side will win the title before this current Liverpool side. Even he’s not that one eyed.

I mean i've already said after seeing these 8 games and the results around us i think we'll stay in front all the way now....but am definitely not counting out the strong possibility City get their act together and do what they have been doing the last 2 seasons to top us. All fun and games predicting shit with gut feelings

Outside pressure, internal pressure from our own fanbase....it all washes over the lads as they take it one game at a time and we know that. Shouldn't be any other way for them amidst this madness. Maybe last year they had to get to grips with that mentality but they're well set in it now

This thread will reach 200 pages atleast before the season is up  ;D

Thirty games to go.

One game at a time.

They all start at nil-nil.

Keep the noses in front after Xmas and I'll listen. Until then, the lads need to soldier on and pick up as many points as possible. Granted, two points per game from now on would land us on 84 and the league has been won by that before, but if City get going that's not going to be near enough. If City keeps last season's pace from here on in they'll have 93. For us to reach that, we need a "season equivalent" of 88 (2.33 pts/game from here on in) to get to 94. The whole season needs to be flawless to get it over the line.

Did they have a game or two in hand at any point? I remember they had a good lead after Christmas and then lost away to United. They also got mugged by them at home in about March. If they’d avoided defeat in either game there’s a good chance they’d have won it. Shows the importance of head to heads in a two horse race I guess.

I think the point he's trying to make is that if you only want to focus on one game at a time, there couldn't be a worse threat to venture into than the one focusing on the title in October. Which is fair, I too get annoyed by people posting "one game at a time" in threads specifically for focusing on something else than just the next game.

Newcastle were a flash in the pan that season. They had no experience of a title run and nobody expected them to go on and win it.

We were 10 points ahead at a later stage last season. It's too early to get too excited.

I'm a bit more confident than I was at the start of the season, partly because we've so far navigated through two major injuries to key players (Alisson and Naby) entirely unscathed, so we're still going to get stronger in the medium term, barring any changes to that equation.

But even more importantly than that, the fact that City are going to be without Laporte for most of the season is going to be critical. I don't doubt that they can replace him in January with someone fairly good, but in the fairly unlikely event they'd be as good and hit the ground running, who knows how many points they would have dropped by then?

I fully expect that we won't finish with as many points as we did last season (our small sample of underlying numbers indicate that we either haven't hit our stride or are just not quite as fluent as we were in attack/as stout as we were in defence), but this City team will not finish with 98 points this season either. I expect 90 points will win the league this season, and I think we're going to need every last game to get there - but I think we will get there.

City had a game in hand, which they played the next day and won. Our biggest lead over them after any game week was 7 points. That only lasted a few days as we played them the next game and the gap was 4 points.
