Went to his stand-up last night. Very enjoyable. Was really pleased to see Henning Wehn in support (he of being German & Fighting Talk fame). Wehn was on for 20 mins... splitting his act between being German (and the war) and football... had one or two really close to the bone gags in there ;D Quick interlude then Lee came on. Dug his nails into Frankie Boyle (i.e. being over 40 and not able to be angry anymore) and then Richard Hammond brilliantly, and a great rant on advertising. Brilliant ad-libber too. He even got his guitar out at the end... recognising of course that this is always a fatal move. Thoroughly recomended. I even saw Alan Moore chatting with Henning Wehn at the end and wondered if they'd stayed over. Probably did.

Great stuff about living in the country and people's desire for a 'better standard of living'... 'Hi Lee... yeah ... come and stay over... yeah... we can go for a walk.. and look at the horse in the field... oh yeah, can you bring some coke?'

I saw his new show in Canterbury a few days ago. Loved the stuff on Richard Hammond, but the material I enjoyed the most was the "give it to me straight like 100% pear cider" stuff. Had Tony Law supporting so was a quality double.

Saw his "If you Prefer A Milder Comedian..." show tonight in that London. He's still as arrogantly misanthropic as ever. Delighted to see him skewer Top Gear and the laughing hyenas that present it, easy targets, but he was deliciously rude in a manner that only he can manage.

I'd be tempted to see it for that alone. Clarkson is a walking cartoon now anyway but I'd love to see just how elegantly he dissects him.

He went for Richard "The Hamster" Hammond (he's not a real hamster...) in a hugely entertaining way. I fucking despise him too, so it was easy pickings, really, but I still enjoyed it.

Stew can hold an audience in the palm of his hand, controlled, for minutes on end just waiting for the promise of the offer of a punchline. I don't think there is a better stand up out there on the circuit. But he is an acquired taste. He also had a few sharp words for Frankie Boyle, but he reserved his most damning lines for his immolation of Michael McIntyre. After telling us that he had nothing to share with us about our lives (because he doesn't care about our lives), Stew suggested that people who enjoy Michael McIntyre are effectively enjoy being spoon fed warm diarrhoea. ;D

Seeing him in Sheffield next Wednesday - not seen him live for a few years so looking forward to it. Got tickets for Richard Herring's Hitler Moustache show in March too which is meant to be excellent.

Off to see him this afternoon, Bristol Tobacco Factory. Not felt like laughing much recently, so really looking forward to this. Anyone who gives those c*nts Clarkson and Hammnond a kicking has to be worth the price of admission.

I'm sure that you will love the show, Jon. I tried to explain his appeal to someone last night and failed miserably - "he tells insufferably long and repetitive stories that don't have really have a punchline in a cynically jaundiced manner" was about as accurate as I could manage...I bloody love him!  :D

Cynically jaundiced may- just may- ring a bell with me. It's the Matinee performance at 4- any idea how long he goes on for?

Fuck me that was superb. Simon Munnery opened (as himself, rather than Alan Parker or League Against Tedium) and was very good, but Lee was immense.
He was savage about Clarkson ('his controversial opinions...which he has... every week for money...in The Sunday Times') and Hammond in particular; the story about Hammond in school was genius ('cheerleader for ignorance'). He was on for two hours and the closing version of Galway Girl was class too. He hung around in the bar afterwards and seemed a decent bloke; seemed genuinely quite touched we had done a 100-odd mile round trip to see him, while moaning about some local venues not wanting to book him. A fantastic afternoon.

Have just been catching up on the comedy vehicle shows on youtube, loved the 'delboy falling through a bar' and
ant & dec stuff. Highly addictive, he's really out on his own. Would love to see a live show.

I saw him at the Free Fringe benefit event in London last week, he did the last 20 mins of the night and was really excellent. Would love to see a full set, he seems a really unique and cliche free comedian - it was crazy how he held the audiences attention.

That was absolutely top class, probably the funniest performance I've ever been to. So many good moments but I can't remember crying with laughter so much as I did in the first 20 minutes of Stewart Lee's routine tonight.

Absolutely brilliant. The 'give it to me straight, like a pear cider' was superb, but my favourite part was when he wished blindness on Jeremy Clarkson's daughters ("not really, I'm just being politically incorrect, you know, like in Top Gear?").

Got told the other day that the Beeb had refused him second series. While I don't think Comedy vehicle touched the heights it was still 99.99 per cent better than the curdled jism that the Beeb ejaculate so weakly. There are some fucktards in positions of power innit.

That is shocking. Always made me laugh whenever I watched it. Crazy when you shite like The Culture Show and Nurse Jackie on BBC2 at that time.

Stew news - he's got a book coming out in August, coinciding with his 23rd year at the Fringe. He's also got a pilot for a new show to be filmed, and the material in the Fringe show and subsequent UK tour will form the basis for the second series of his Comedy Vehicle - which will air in Spring 2011. Will definitely be seeing him in the next month!

Stewart Lee: my life on the shelf

What happens to a man who compulsively collects comics, books, records and CDs? He becomes very good at building shelves… Comedian Stewart Lee on the challenges and hazards of extreme storage

What are days for?" asks the curmudgeonly poet Philip Larkin in his poem Days, questioning the very point of living. He is unable to offer any real comfort, concluding: "Ah, solving that question/brings the priest and the doctor/in their long coats/running over the fields." For Larkin the idea of days, and what to do with them, represents the problem of existence boiled down to its barest essentials. I have a similar relationship with shelves.
