;D

The non branched ones auto ignite more easily so have a lower octane rating and case knocking.  The branched ones less so.

The surface of the zeolite can also be used as a catalyst to promote transformation from straight to branched molecules.

not exactly rocket science is it.  :P

i remember the pitch holding up well enough this season.

Do they have the same grass-soil combo on some of the training pitches? Is that common practice to get players used to the speed of the turf or would it be an expensive overkill?

I imagine where possible they'll almost certainly try and have the same pitches.

Is it just me or should the pitch have handled the conditions better last night? I know it was one hell of a hail storm just minutes before kick off but the pitch didn't really improve until the ground staff got the snow shovels out at the kop end at half time. The pitch was basically waterlogged for most of the game.

Anfield has an undersoil heating system. However I think best comparison would be like a NFL playoff game in snow in like Green Bay as they have similar heating system, it will help the field be better and not be 100% frozen if very cold or snowing but wont make the field 100%, so still bad field however would make it so field is not frozen.
https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpools-new-anfield-pitch-everything-13196892
Here a recent article on Green bay, was supposed to be 20 degree F(-6.67 C), but the heating system made it like 40 degree(4.4 C)

You're not allowed to use the undersoil heating whilst the match is being played. Has to be turned off an hour before I believe.

To be honest, I didn't know this.

I was really shocked last night because the temperature was above freezing throughout the match and for hours afterwards too. I did expect the under soil heating to have seen off what was not really a heavy layer of hail, but it remained pretty much throughout. It does make sense now if the heating is not actually on when the game is being played and the hail shower happening just prior to kick off. Just unfortunate timing I suppose, seeing as how it pretty much killed our quick passing game.

Thought it looked a little long and the hail then sat in it (you could see it flicking up as the ball rolled, even where the grass looked pretty green). Wonder if the snow earlier on had stopped them getting a final cut in?

Yes, it did look a bit longer than usual, and as the ball rolled over the grass it kept lifting up the hail and making white lines all over the pitch. What you suggest makes sense.

It certainly had an impact on our game.

Those white lines looked like con trails and a bright summers day.

It did. I think it killed it in an attacking sense for us. Leicester adapted ok to it and it suited them far more than it did us.

With those white lines, I half expected photoshops of Robbie Fowler doing his line-sniffing antics to have appeared today.  :D

there was frozen hail on the pitch.

It was acting against the ball.  It had a huge effect

Anyhow from 2017...

Ground staff at Anfield are working on the summer project to improve the playing surface and overall quality of the pitch ready for the new campaign.

The changes will see a new automatic irrigation system installed to help improve drainage from the pitch. It will allow the surface to be watered prior to kick-off in under three minutes. Anfield will also be the first stadium in the UK to fit the unique 'Permavoid' irrigation system which will speed up drainage, especially in wetter months.

In addition, a new undersoil heating system has been put in place which will help aid growth and also prevent the ground from freezing during the winter months. As part of the undersoil heating system, over 19 miles of pipeline has been put in place to ensure optimum conditions for maintenance and grass growth. Eight heat and moisture sensors have been installed to help monitor the best growing environment for the pitch.

Over 40,000km of artificial grass fibres will be stitched into the layers of sand beneath the pitch, which will be composed of 97 per cent organic grass and three per cent artificial grass fibres.

Interesting Anfield pitch facts…

Over 19 miles of pipeline has been installed under the pitch as part of Anfield’s new undersoil heating system.

Specialised installers will inject over 20 million individual artificial turf fibres into the pitch at Anfield.

Over 40,000km of artificial fibre will be stitched into the pitch during the renovation – the equivalent of the Earth’s circumference.

Over ½ ton of grass seed will be sown into the pitch at Anfield. This in turn will produce approximately 250 million grass plants. Each grass plant typically has around five leaves meaning that players will be playing football on approximately 1.25 billion individual blades of grass.

The club uses Dwarf Perennial Ryegrass which is the strongest and most hardwearing grass for sports pitches. There are approximately 1,000 types of Dwarf Perennial Ryegrass around the world and our ground staff use four of the best cultivars to grow Anfield’s hallowed turf.

Once grown, the pitch at Anfield is cut and tended to daily.

Ground staff use 12 large grow lights and three small grow lights to cultivate the grass on the pitch. One grow light includes a tent which can be used over the goalmouth where the temperature and humidity can be controlled to speed up growth.

Longer = slower passing. We def don’t normally keep it longer for an advantage.

We usually keep it short and well watered in order to aid slick, quick passing. Growing it longer would hamper that.

Opposition teams have been known to keep the grass long when playing us and other slick passing teams in order to slow us down.
