Such a great singer and songwriter, have everything he's done from Temple of the Dog onwards. Soundgarden where in the process of recording a new album also.

I've been exploring the roots of Grunge and early nineties rock over the last few years as I was just a smidge too young to have got into it then, so this is quite poignant to me. Superunknown and badmotorfinger really are treasures from that era of the uncensored and undiluted.

What stood out for me was Soundgarden were able to evoke moments of tenderness in between the chaos and noise.

Chris Cornell had one of those rare voices in any format of music, where the instant he locks onto a note, you know *exactly* who is singing; it's unmistakable.

He had one of the great rock voices. Tremendous range: could sustain the high notes like Plant and sing a deep groove like Vedder.

So sad. I was really hoping to see them as I missed out a few years back when they did the anniversary gig for the album Superunknown. What an unreal singer, many a beer have been drunk listening to his songs. RIP :-(

A punch in the gut hearing the sad news. I was 18 when they released Louder Than Love, and was getting into this 'alternative US rock' stuff in a big way, tho maybe not the more 'metally' stuff like Soundgarden et al, but they held some love for me. Summer of 1991, me and 3 mates hitched over to Paris for a 3 day binge - I'd sold a painting for £100 I think so I was flush (ha). Visited the Pompidou Centre one morning, and after went for a coffee there... pretty large space, hardly anyone there, apart from 3 fellas with long hair sat at a table a few metres away with somebody else... shit... that's Soundgarden! So I walk over. My mates didn't really know them but followed, and got chatting. And I remember Cornell being particularly friendly - they all were to be fair, except the interviewer, who was kinda hoping we pissed off, but the band were 'no, it's cool man' attitude. I think I was trying to persude them to do their next album cover or something (#smh).

I've never been a great fan of that kind of metal hard rock sound, but can gladly listen to them, as I will be doing today... but you couldn't fault that voice. Such sad news.

Only really listened to the one Soundgarden album. Loved his voice though, something so perfectly nineties about it.

"You Know My Name" is one of the best Bond songs there is too.

Really sad news. Thoughts with his family and friends particularly his 3 kids.

Cornell had a great voice. Absolutely loved Soundgarden in the 90's and was lucky to see them a few times. Thought Audiosoave were decent in parts too.

Only really Eddie Vedder now still alive out of the singers from the big 90's grunge bands. Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Layne Staley and now Chris Cornell have all passed away.

I count myself fortunate to have seen him live three times, once with Soundgarden. To me, the man was living proof that the human voice can be as beautiful and powerful an instrument as any guitar, with every bit as much potential to disrupt the hairs on the back of your neck. Another unique talent lost. RIP.

Like every other kid of the 80's the Grunge scene hit me at the perfect time. Teenage years ruined by Stayley , Cornell and Vedder.

Badmotorfinger is still one of the best albums of the 90s for me. Incredible vocals.

“Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris—or if any substances contributed to his demise,” the Cornell family said.

The 52 year-old Soundgarden frontman had a prescription for Ativan, the family said, and may have taken a higher dosage. Attorney Kirk Pasich noted that Ativan can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgement.

Ativan is a tranquilizer and anti-anxiety medication that is sometimes used as a sleeping aid.

Vicky Cornell, the singer’s wife, added, “Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband.”

She said Cornell flew home from Soundgarden’s tour the weekend before to spend time with his wife and children, before returning to the mid-west.

Cornell was found dead in his hotel bathroom early Thursday in Detroit. Soundgarden had played a show just hours before at the Fox Theater.

His death was ruled a suicide by hanging by the local medical examiner, but Cornell’s family called the mentions of suicide “disturbing.”

“When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different,” his wife added. “When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him.”

She added: “What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life. The outpouring of love and support from his fans, friends and family means so much more to us than anyone can know. Thank you for that, and for understanding how difficult this is for us.”
