Surely Dune is his most famous?
I dunno mate, I think he got Dune off the back of his success of The Elephant Man, it's definetly one of the most famous flops; but it flopped for all the wrong reasons. I think, Dune is a cracking film, the problem is, is that it was up against Star Wars. Star Wars had skewed out a small but vast chunk of the (Action Sci-Fi) Genre, whereas Dune was much more of an Operatta than anything, it was a Saga and should have been a Trilogy.
People's spirits had been raised with Star Wars, it had shown the masses a sensationalist leftie story which captured America's counter culture, before the peak of Capitalism, and people loved it for that. However, what is interesting is that these same political connotations can be applied on the contrary, some would say that the Empire epitomized everything wrong with Socialism and Communism. Either way, the power of Star Wars was in it's
timing. De Laurentis did what every other businessman tried to do, which was to ride the bear; but the dark, brooding, expressionist and cerebral style of Dune, really did turn off the newfound Sci-Fi fans. I remember reading somewhere that one of the biggest responses in test screenings mentioned Star Wars in one form or another. Some would argue that the biggest problem with Dune, was simply timing; I agree, it was not a good time to release a Sci-Fi opera.
I really don't like The Elephant Man. Obviously, it's superbly made but it's not my sort of film at all, also I don't think it's his most well known film. If you were to ask 100 people to name a David Lynch movie, I'd imagine Blue Velvet or maybe Eraserhead would top the poll, but then I suppose that would all depend on what sort of people were asked
I've owned The Elephant Man for years, I got it as part of a boxset, I don't think I've ever taken the disc out of the box, not sure I ever will.
I see what you are saying, but I suppose that would depend on what kind of audience you where asking, if it was Family Fortunes, I guess you'd be right, but I would argue that, for the most part, The Elephant Man is his best know film due to it's successes at the Academy Awards.
However, above all, I'd take a stab at saying, overall, the work David Lynch is best known for, would be Twin Peaks. (The difference being, obviously
being in the semantics).
