So, tour coming up....

http://www.tomwaits.com/

European dates to follow! London and Manchester rumoured for the UK, Dublin almost certain for Ireland.

I'm guessing £70 - 80 per ticket.
Thanks a million for posting this info last weekend - just got my tickets for the Atlanta show.

Beyond excited now and a three-day weekend to boot!   ;D

Great stuff! :)

I just hope I'm able to succeed in getting tickets for a reasonably located European show. It'll be tricky, but I can hope....

Have recently finished reading "Innocent when you dream", edited by Mac Montandon.(Published by Orion) It's a collection of interviews and articles on Tom. A bit repetitive in parts because of similar views by some authors. But worth reading alone for the humour of Tom Waits and how he goes about his craft. The fact that Tom Waits doesn't tour very often means if you ever get a chance to get tickets: don't hesitate.
I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

Bizarrely Scarlett Johannson has just released an album of Tom Waits covers. Apparently it is quite listenable too, although I haven't heard any of it.

One internet review said 'Who cares if she can sing or not, she's got great tits.'

So, I'm hearing rumours that the ticket price for the Irish shows could be somewhere between 150 - 200 Euro. If converted directly into pounds for a UK show, the price could be as high as £160 (ie - more than double what it apparently was in 2004).

Not totally, utterly confirmed but it seems pretty legit....

http://www.list.co.uk/article/8567-tom-waits-to-play-scotland/

Two Edinburgh shows in July set to be singer's only UK dates

Tom Waits, legendary singer-songwriter, actor and raconteur is to perform two shows at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 27 and 28 July. Waits has not played in Scotland in almost 21 years, when he last appeared live it was also at the Playhouse in November 1987.

These dates are to be his only UK shows on this brief European leg of his Glitter and Doom tour. He is also said to be playing Paris, Dublin and a handful of other mainland Europe dates.

The first leg of this tour was announced earlier this month via a press conference delivered in Waits’ own unique style. The dates for that leg visit the south and west of the US.

Waits last visited the UK in 2004 when he played dates in London.

Tickets for the Edinburgh shows will go on sale on Tuesday 27 May at 10am, priced £95 and £75.

Tickets will only be available via www.ticketmaster.co.uk and on 0870 606 3434.

A bit of travelling involved, but I'm willing if I can get tickets. Prices are very high, as expected, but not as catastrophically awful as they could've been. I suppose I'll look to get the £95 ones.

I'd love it if he played a gig in Liverpool. I reckon his songs sum up the mood of the Dock Road and other places in our city at night time.

Tom Waits plays the 'Glitter and Doom' tour through Europe this summer

I've never attempted outside the studio. They are all
multi-instrumentalists and they polka like real men. We are the Borman
Six and as Putney says, "The Borman Six have got to have soul."

The European tour will also be subject to new anti-scalper plans, thus
attempting to ensure that every fan will pay only face value (plus
normal service and handling fees) for the tickets. They will be limited
to two per person with the purchaser's name - and name of their plus one

If I were to go to any of these, the Spanish ones it would be.

I saw Dylan play a couple of shows in Spain 10 years ago and it beat the shite MEN Arena experience I had previously.

'Tis a lot, isn't it....(I paid almost exactly the same per ticket for Paris). Works out at a hundred and ten quid. Thankfully no extra fees were added by the French promoters...Did Ticketmaster hammer you further for Dublin?

However, as much as it cost....I see loads of really shitty artists charging at least £75 for the best available tickets for massive stadium gigs so £110 for fourth row, bang in the centre to see Tom Waits in a small theatre doesn't feel as bad afterall....

The MEN is horrible in my experience (which is only one show, admittedly). Morrissey's 'homecoming' show in 2004 and while there was nothing wrong with the gig itself, the acoustics in the place were just horrible. Horrible, horrible and probably vying with the Alexandra Palace for Nick Cave a couple of years later in London for the worst sound quality (for a good show) I've experienced.

Had Swordfishtrombones on for the drive into work this morning. He's a legend. I suppose you either 'get' him or you don't; but give me an artist like that any day of the week, rather than some beige ubiquity.

I 'get' him without a doubt but he's not 'getting' my money. That's fucking obscene.

Having said that...I know a few people at the Edinburgh Playhouse...Hmmm perhaps they need an extra security guard/cleaner/bloke who says 'testing, testing'... :)

It's a shame the council didn't pull their fingers out of their arses and get the likes of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits to do shows in Liverpool with the Capital of Culture thing...

Is right.

About 3/4 years ago I phoned up the guy who organises the Summer Pops. Notified him that Bruce Springsteen was touring Europe and it would coincide with the time of the pops. Maybe Bruce might be responsive to a one off small gig in the home of the Beatles. Riverside. Noo Joisee connection etc. Basically he said no and put the phone down on me.

;D

The problem is the powers that be seem to think most scousers are Westlife or Aussie Pink Floyd fans.

Just back from the Atlanta show....    8)

There's really nothing to say - the man's an absolute genius and the concert actually exceeded expections if you can believe it.  For those of you attending the shows over that way in the next few weeks, you are some lucky bastards; never mind the hefty price tag on the tickets.  Believe me, after the show is over, you'll immediately wish you'd gotten tickets to as many stops on the tour as possible.  Simply awesome.

Preaching to the converted here obviously but there's clearly no one like Tom and I hope all admirers out there get the chance to see him on stage at least once...I'm sick it's taken this long and I'm praying I get another hit in the near future.  Disintegration, thank you again so much for posting the info as I would definitely have missed it otherwise.  You're ever in NY, you've got a drink or five coming to you, honey!   :thumbup

A couple of crap pictures below but I wasn't really trying too hard as I didn't want anything to take away from enjoying the show.  Did manage to record a bit so look forward to checking it out.

'Step Right Up' came up on shuffle in the car earlier and I had forgotten how funny the ad-babble lyrics are:

That's right, it filets, it chops, it dices, slices,
Never stops, lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn
And it mows your lawn and it picks up the kids from school
It gets rid of unwanted facial hair, it gets rid of embarrassing age spots,
It delivers a pizza, and it lengthens, and it strengthens
And it finds that slipper that's been at large
under the chaise lounge for several weeks
And it plays a mean Rhythm Master,
It makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar
And it's only a dollar, step right up, it's only a dollar, step right up...

Right here, right now, Tom Waits is IT. I'm going through one of my periodic obsessions - maybe one reason I was no good at being married, which depends on the hum and the drum for longevity in most cases- and the man soundtracks every moment. There's just something about That Voice, sounding like Keith Richards has been living in it, and the gruff, bruised romance of the songs. The wit, the sheer strangeness of the stories, damn it I love this man.

Perhaps it takes a more radio-friendly voice to uncover the magic of these songs for some- Rod Stewart doing Downtown Train or The Boss covering Jersey Girl- and the persona is probably the most 'constructed' in white music, but this is incredible stuff. Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones are Heartattack and Vine are 'rocking my world' (as no-one ever says anymore, ever, and quite rightly too), but All You Need Is Here. Titanic.

I'll tell you what, instead of drinks you can just give this hopeless tourist some pointers on figuring out the subway next time I take a New York trip. IE: how to not end up walking aimlessly around Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn at the exact time you're supposed to be on Fifth Avenue, Manhattan (on a day in which you ultimately spend an additional two hours lost in the ever-so-slightly humid subway itself). ;D

;D  ...Would absolutely do my best to assist in avoiding that happening again - though would love to know how it happened the first time!  Over that drink or five...  ;)

Just celebrated my birthday and am filling in gaps in my collection as there were a couple of fairly recent albums missing - didn't see Blood Money mentioned earlier but it's quickly becoming a favorite as the lyrics and mood are quintessential Tom for me.... (lol sorry - just noticed your avatar).    Also, don't recall seeing Real Gone mentioned on here either?   "Hoist That Rag" is one of the highlights of the current tour.... the man is just so ridiculously prolific it's hard to keep up with everything.    In case I didn't mention it before, the tour band (with son Casey on drums) is smokin'.   You guys are in for a treat - seriously.

Still buzzing - and now I've got "What's He Building In There?" stuck in my head...

And no one's even mentioned his film roles/cameos yet!  Too much good stuff - and by all means, rent the "Fishing with John" series if you can...   (oh alright, just so you don't have to work too hard... )

Still buzzing - and now I've got "What's He Building In There?" stuck in my head...

Good call, Connie.  8)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaLjwSpZ6Cs

What's he building in there?
What the hell is he building
In there?
He has subscriptions to those
Magazines... He never
Waves when he goes by
He's hiding something from
The rest of us... He's all
To himself... I think I know
Why... He took down the
Tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his
Own you see... He has no dog
And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying... and
What about all those packages
He sends. What's he building in there?
With that hook light
On the stairs. What's he building
In there... I'll tell you one thing
He's not building a playhouse for
The children what's he building
In there?

Now what's that sound from under the door?
He's pounding nails into a
Hardwood floor... and I
Swear to god I heard someone
Moaning low... and I keep
Seeing the blue light of a
T.V. show...
He has a router
And a table saw... and you
Won't believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There's poison underneath the sink
Of course... But there's also
Enough formaldehyde to choke
A horse... What's he building
In there. What the hell is he
Building in there? I heard he
Has an ex-wife in some place
Called Mayors Income, Tennessee
And he used to have a
consulting business in Indonesia...
but what is he building in there?
What the hell is building in there?

He has no friends
But he gets a lot of mail
I'll bet he spent a little
Time in jail...
I heard he was up on the
Roof last night
Signaling with a flashlight
And what's that tune he's
Always whistling...
What's he building in there?
What's he building in there?

We have a right to know...

Heads up to the new Tom Waits album.
"Glitter and Doom Live" 2 discs, songs from the 2008 tour of USA and Europe.
Release date= 23 Nov 2009.

I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.
