Only been to NYC once, about 9 years ago now, here's a picture I cherish, on Top of the World......

Nice pic that.
Remember missing a train back to Boston in the summer of 2000 and ended up sitting outside the WTC on the Sunday night with my mate getting plastered on a crate of Heineken.

Only other time I was in NY, 8 of us got a limo up from Wildwood to see Sasha & Digweed in Twilo in 1999. When we arrived, the queue was like nothing I'd ever seen, round the whole block, and we looked to have no hope. With nothing to lose, 3 of us told the bouncers we were the Republic of Ireland U21 football team on a US tour and they said we could go straight in...even the VIP queue was down the block and we just marched straight in pissing ourselves laughing getting all sorts of abuse thrown at us. What a night it was...never to be forgotten.

I've lived in the city my whole life and it's interesting to get an outsider's view of New York.  I'm guessing New York is a popular spot for you all!

For those wanting to visit, are about to visit or just simply curious --

Manhattan is great, but there's a growing outer borough culture where hip and trendy bars are popping up.  Brooklyn (where I live) has some great spots, especially close to the City (what us NY'ers call Manhattan...it's confusing, I know.)  Brooklyn Heights is really scenic, especially at night.  There's this one spot called the Promenade -- http://cache.virtualtourist.com/1872979-Brooklyn_Heights_Promenade-Brooklyn_Heights.jpg.  It's wonderful, scenic spot and a good photo opportunity.

Queens is also a hidden gem and as mentioned before, Astoria is where it's at.  Also, a lot of people don't know this, but there's ANOTHER Chinatown in the city -- actually, three of them.  This one in Flushing is massive and there are so many great restaurants to choose from, you can't go wrong.  A bit out of the way from the hussle and bustle of Manhattan, but worth the trip.

I used to work in the Chelsea area of Manhattan and there's one place -- Chelsea Market -- that has a lot of good food.  It's also where the Food Network is headquarters and that guy Iron Chef Morimoto has his steakhouse.  Also has free dance classes on certain days and other stuff like brain teasers and quizzes.

The great thing about New York is that you can literally walk down one block and find something completely new and exciting.  It's an exciting city to live and work in, although the weather has been piss poor the last week or so.
“It was the first game of the qualifying for us and well we can take a lot from it ,like I was talking to one of the guys from TNS about my internet connection at home and he said the reason I sometimes can't get on is because I am running the wrong browser with Windows 95 and he suggested I update to Windows XP” - 23 Carra Gold

Also in Astoria there is a huge greek population so if you greek food that is the place to be.  there is also a great bohemian beer garden out there as well.

Oh, and it's sunny for the first time this week, felt like we've bee in england.

Carnegie Deli, opposite side of the road to Carnegie Hall and a little further down towards Times Square, pastrami sandwiches to die for!

Shop around SoHo and Greenwich for clobber, midtown is overpriced.

Walk across Brooklyn Bridge and look uptown for the quintessential NY view.

Top of the Rock for the best view in New York

Ellis Island is one of the most interesting things you`ll ever do!

Check out nymag.com it has great listings. I found out Arctic Monkeys were playing and Billy Connolly within 2 nights of each other, Connolly in a tiny theatre. Got tickets for both no bother

Go up to Harlem, its cool and not as dangerous as some make out

I`m going to go and book again now!!!
I'm better than dirt. Well, most kinds of dirt, not that fancy store-bought dirt... I can't compete with that stuff.

I'd also recommend checking out what's on in the parks - there is often some great entertainment. Try Summerstage  (Central Park), there are also some operas on free in the parks - just take a picnic.

If anyone likes running there is check out NYRRC website. They have races on most weekends (often in Central Park)...all abilities welcomed.

No worries.
Was just under £1100 for 7 nights.
Flights were about £1000 for the two of us.

Apparently they film Gossip Girl at the New York Palace, but I have only just heard of said show and it seems way out of my spectrum

Yes they do because I love that show (unashamedly) and when I saw the pics for the New York Palace I was certain it was the setting for the school in that show. Dont get distracted by the 20 year old girls in school uniforms when you are there.

Ours are perfect time-wise and airport wise, plus we booked quite late really

Am sure someone will get you on the right track, sadly not me as this is my first visit (hence my bump of the thread).
We just looked at tripadvisors list of hotels in New York ( http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotels-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Hotels.html ) and went down the list trying to get as high a review rating hotel for the cheapest price and went for the one which is fluctuating between 2 and 3 on their list :)
