That's a great find Tsar.

I've just given them all a quick browse through and those 65- 70 shots are so atmospheric and capture the mundane details of areas around town of certainly my youth and into my mid teens. Most scenes are likely totally unrecognisable today. It's unfortunate that the pre 70 shots aren't location identified though the later 81 ones are. The 1981 July 27 film 023 look like post Toxteth riot aftermath shots.

Do you know if there are more shots planned to be put up on that site?

I've no idea if they have any more to put up Gulley, I hope so. As you say the fact they aren't beauty spot shots is refreshing. You're right about the Toxteth ones (1981); there are also 2 Toxteth series in the 1960s group (one is Upper Warwick St and the other is High Park St). I only found it yesterday - I was looking for oldish photos of my old infant/junior school.
Just to say: I think they were areas that were due for demolishing/regenerating.

Something I noticed was those 60's shots seemed to be only numbered up to 12 so I'm guessing the photographer was using 120 film at the time as my first camera back in the early 70's was an ancient handmedown Agfa Isolette with folding bellows using 120 and I have a vague memory of the film only holding 12 pictures. The 80's ones numbers seem to go higher so I'm guessing the photographer had by then transitioned to a 35mm SLR camera. Given that, I expect those 120 format shots to actually be really detailed when blown up.

But there are some lovely little details in among those pictures. There's quite a few shots of coal lorries going about on their business and a wonderful shot back in those 60's ones, forgotten where at the moment, of a lorry with two lads perched between the sacks on the back being driven along. H&S would have a fit at that these days as well as the Police.

But yes, as you say, I expect many of the shots are to capture the scenes before demolition happened or as in some scenes, was completed, and hats off to whoever it was who had the gumption to do it before it was all gone and only in peoples memories.

I'm still after a decent photograph of Kemlyn road that will have my Nans (& Grandads) on my Dads side house that I used to go to in the late 50's and early 60's, clearly visible in it.

I'd not thought about the numbering Gulley, well not the significance anyway, but the odd street sign that he manages to catch more often than not is blurred to the point of useless.
Oddly enough re the coal lorry, there was one I saw last night, with the fella who lugged the the sacks standing alongside the lorry.
I lived in the area about this time and used to buy 28lb brown-paper bags of coal from the local co-op shop (the side wall of which is on the front left of the pic).

Another here of the Prince William on Crown st..you can see the Life Sciences building before 5 or 6 floors were lopped off it,unbelievable views from the original roof terrace, also the Computer Sciences building at the far end right hand side..how on earth did that get planning permission when it takes up most of the pavement?!!

Does anyone have any images of inside the 'World Museum' when it used to be the old 'William Brown Street' museum? In particular the trains and cars that used to be in there.

Thanks

Medellin mentions the old Cobbled street. When my daughter was about eight she'd go nowhere near it. Absolutely terrified.

Do you remember the montage of the Kings Regiment troops in the Korean War?

The cobbled street was an eerie place for any youngster mate, myself included.
Can't recall the troops to be honest..the main things that stood out were the Planetarium, the fountain,Totem pole & the Egyptian mummy displays.
The basement area was my favourite place.

Not sure. I think there's a number of difficulties replicating exactly the original old photo shot, lens type, depth of field etc, let alone the exact position.

You're right in that the first comparison shot is a bit off, missing the far side and Fort Perch Rock, but the problem I have your suggested view is St Anthony's is clearly visible on the right hand side in it whereas in the old photo it's not, suggesting that the old photo was perhaps taken a bit further to the left than your view and angled a bit more to the west to still get the other side of the water in the frame.

It's one of those difficult ones to attempt to be precise using streetview.

Interesting that Tsar, I wonder why they took three photos centred on the same house from different angles

The house (the one in the middle) seems to have a plaque on the wall to the right of the front door though annoyingly the detail is illegible at that resolution. It could perhaps give a faint clue if only we could read it.

Near but maybe not high enough up? Those two shots are wrong as they are looking in different directions, the old one towards New Brighton and the river Estuary, the other into the City centre.

Aye, Gulley, I've tried reading the negative image and it's worse. They're pretty distinctive houses, being townhouses, and the amount of parked cars suggests, to me anyway, that they are likely close to town. They would probably have been demolished not long after the photos (1970), so you'd need to be near 60ish at least to remember.

A bit of a long shot, but the photos on that roll may well have all been taken during the same session.

The roll starts around here ...

http://copperbeechstudios.co.uk/filmrolls.php?city=liverpool&&year=1970&&month=01&&day=19&&film=001&&frame=Picture003.jpg

and then moves onto the photos in question, before moving onto Aigburth.

In that pic above there is a road name on the wall though I can't quite make it out though perhaps if you look at the neg it might be clearer.

It could give a clue as to the area.

The 'T' and the last 2 x 'S' s  seem to match those in the lower 'STREET', but it's really difficult to be sure.

Anyone give us a hand....
Gulley, the first three frames in that roll's link look like they might be in the kind of lower end of Upper Parly or Duke St area, or the town end of Park Road, or perhaps the back streets around Rodney, what about maybe the now demolished streets around the Anglican Cathedral?

Loving the graffiti on one - "......FOR POPE!"

I wonder if it's "Ian St John..."? ;D

The later shots, deffo recognise Aigburth area. JohnC might be able to give actual exact locations! His neck of the woods that.

The post twat ;D

Yeah frame 36 is the rear view of Swainbanks Furniture (The Rialto) seen side-on in frame 15. More or less the angle I watched it burn from actually....

Frame 14 - wasn't that a bank, or became one? NatWest?

Frame 20 looks like Lodge Lane....

Forgot to comment on that picture.

The Computer Lab, as it was called, was my old playground in the mid 70's, and a bunch of us dipsomaniacs would quite often go to the Prince William for a lunchtime pint or three rather than the AJ to get inspiration for tricky bits of code...not a bad little pub if I remember rightly with a very nice pint of Guinness served there.

Excellent.

According to Historic Liverpool, that would probably make that sign Cardigan Street, nothing like what I was guessing though my excuse is the enlarged neg of it was a bit Rorschach'y. ;D

View of Alfred Street now.
