My sister has lived in Galway for several years - amazing place. Yet to see anywhere like it in Ireland for atmosphere and the people. I have visited quite a lot and stayed in a range of places from The G (5 Star) to The Huntsman Inn across the road, which is a hotel/restaurant but definitely a place of good value. It’s a lovely 10 minute walk along the laugh into the city centre. It has lots of gorgeous villages around the city centre - even staying somewhere beautiful like Oranmore which has its own pubs and restaurants and you can commute into town via train or bus.

There are busses from Dublin airport to Galway - easily accessible and frequent - have done the same journey a few times myself but a non-stop bus will be closer to 3 hours.

If hiring a car is an option, then that would be shorter. And would allow you to travel to places like the Cliffs of Moher, or taking a ferry to the Aran islands. Even visit Fr Teds house!

Shannon airport is closer to Galway - about 30 mins, and another option if you can get a flight to there. Shorter commute!

Definitely wouldn’t hesitate booking. Amazing place!

What's the difference in journey time from each airport to Galway?

I've booked the hotel anyway, Staying here https://www.eyresquarehotel.com looks decent! and was cheaper because its undergoing renovation but only from 9am-6pm, we will be out n about anyway!

No better place for a lads weekend away. Great pubs all within a short distance, some decent hotels about too. It has gotten a bit touristy but nowhere near as bad as Dublin...yet.

It's pretty much a straight road drive from Dublin, just over 2 hours.

Stayed at Flannerys last time, fine hotel. It's a taxi into town or a 20 odd minute walk, which seems a lot longer in the winter months and after too many Guinness.

Quay Street is class - not far from Eyre Square.

Quay Street is a cobbled street, has lots of little pubs which tends to spill out onto the street so you get lots of people standing out on the street drinking in an evening. Creates a brilliant atmosphere.

McDonagh's is on Quay Street for fantastic fish and chips if you like fish and chips.

Hmm, didn't think it was that long. Google suggest 1hr 8mins. 50 mins probably takes me to my sisters, so the city centre is probably another 20 minutes.

Sarge would be talking about 1:45 from Dublin rather than Shannon.

Great pint in a pub called Garvey's almost opposite where your staying.

Cheers everyone! Changed hotels now too, i had a £50 off letter from booking.com, so now staying in jurys inn which is right next to Quay street i believe!

Need recommendations for where to go for a birthday meal though, a decent steak house would be ideal

No there's a few, Citylink will almost definitely be cheaper than Bus Eireann.

Yes, there should be. Should have Wifi as well and generally more comfort than Bus Eireann.

Lived there for a year. Wasn't able to embrace it. Not sure why. Possibly because I didn't like the job I had there coupled with the extreme privatization of health care and insurance. I felt alienated and out of place generally.

Roisin Dubh was a great place though and the landscape and nature in there area with Connemara, Connacht, Cliffs of Moher.
