Trains and boats and bikes...

Heard about it earlier in the week, can't wait to see both.

The lake has weeded over badly considering it was only a couple of years when it was drained and cleared.

So many childhood memories of that park .... so many.

Do you mean time of day or dates?

If it's the former, then I would presume from maybe 9.00 or 10.00am ish.

If it's the latter, then you obviously haven't read the article further up.

They were there two days ago. The people renting them out left at about 5pm, leaving the boats in the middle of the lake.

I feel the opposite mate, for decade those fields have been a waste of unused space. Christ knows why suddenly they're being regarded as 'meadows' - far from it. They are just fields that need expensive maintenance. The city needs quality homes and this is an opportunity to get it right.

And I don't understand the protest against it, the biggest park in Liverpool is 15 feet away.

Sitting on the fence with this one. Agree that it's almost totally ignored - don't think I've ever seen so much as a stray dog on it - but it'd be painful to see those lovely mature trees come down.

Anyway it's a done deal now

Bizarre that there were 7 petitions going on - including 'weekly bin collections' and 'closing Allerton and Kirkby golf courses' - yet this 'Meadows' one had more customers than all the other 6 together, see here  http://councillors.liverpool.gov.uk/mgEPetitionListDisplay.aspx

Two-weekly bin collections, for appropriate properties is appropriate mate. My purple bin is a generally less than half full,

Anything that effects Allerton Golf Course is a scandal imo. I'd hold any decision maker accountable for decades.

Any cuts need to be contextualised. Unused fields are not important, golf courses are. Scrutiny of Brussels, Parliament and all high level political expenditure even at a local level - to the penny. They all get free something, but not one off them will call time on it.

Sarah Jennings, Green Party councillor in neighbouring St Michael’s ward, says there is a huge strength of feeling in the community about the issue.

“Liverpool hasn’t got enough green space as it is," she said. "The idea that a Labour council would sell off green spaces, which every member of the public can access free of charge to walk their dogs, have picnics and spend quality time with their families outdoors

The public can access but choose not to.  If they're not used then empty words about family time and valuable green space is meaningless.

Residents’ fury over Liverpool council plans for licence change to allow large-scale events and alcohol in Sefton Park

by Steve Graves, Liverpool Echo
 Apr 16 2013

SEFTON Park could soon be hosting events for up to 40,000 people and have a year-round alcohol licence if plans are given the go- ahead.

Neighbours today raised fears the move could lead to increased crime and noise levels.

Liverpool council wants to change the park’s licence to permit events attended by up to 40,000 people to be held there.

At the moment, capacities are generally restricted to 10,000, and organisers need temporary licences for events like the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival. Under the council’s plans, that requirement would be scrapped, with a blanket alcohol licence in place.

The increased capacity could allow for major events such as boxing or wrestling and large music festivals to take place within the park’s boundaries.

People living nearby have objected to the move, claiming it will bring more noise, traffic and anti-social behaviour and is going “too far and too fast”.

Others said the plans were not consistent with a policy in place on nearby Lark Lane, where councillors are told to presume against granting alcohol licences due to the large number of pubs and bars in the area.

That approach is aimed at limiting anti-social behaviour and improving the range of businesses in the area.

In a submission to the council’s licensing and gambling sub- committee, which will consider the application later this month, resident Sarah Jennings said she was concerned about the impact of the change.

She said: “Increasing consumption of alcohol and the promotion of large-scale events within the park is likely to lead to high noise levels.

“This will disturb people’s quiet enjoyment of the park and the surrounding areas.”

Another resident said: “This would be a commercialisation of a public park. There is a venue for such commercial events and it is called the ECHO arena.”

Other objections were raised over the impact on local businesses providing alcohol to visitors to events including the Africa Oye festival, which does not permit traders to sell drink on its site in the park.

In its application to the committee, the council says security requirements will be tight, a Challenge 21 policy will be imposed at all events and all drinks will be sold in plastic cups or cans, with a publicity campaign set to be launched to prevent glass bottles being taken into the park.

Other measures would include regular meetings with event organisers and consultation with residents, as well as ensuring organisers use fully-qualified security staff.

A council spokesman said the events would be extremely well- regulated and objections would be taken in to account by councillors when they meet to consider the application in full on April 30.

Capacity change to make park Liverpool’s leading outdoor venue

SEFTON Park’s new crowd limit of 40,000 people would be the largest for any park in the city.

The increase would put it on a par with the Pier Head, which has staged live events including the On the Waterfront festival and the visit of street art spectacle La Machine.

Lifting the capacity limit to such an extent would elevate the park to a slot among the largest events venues in the entire city, dwarfing the ECHO Arena’s 11,000 capacity and putting it into a similar bracket as both Goodison Park and Anfield as an outdoor venue.

If the application is approved, Sefton would also become the first park in Liverpool to be granted an alcohol licence.

Licensed premises currently based in the park include Sefton Park Cricket Club and the Palm House.

In 2011, the Oasis in the Park cafe was allowed to serve alcohol in the face of objections from the council’s parks manager, Paul Scragg.

Mr Scragg said crime and public safety concerns meant the cafe’s licence should be restricted to private hire events and no alcohol should be sold to the general public. The licensing committee approved the application but said drinks were to be served with meals and not taken outside.

That's what I thought, I'm almost certain they were serving ale last time I went to Africa Oye, which was two years ago.

I think these were one offs but now they want the park to have an all year round license, must admit can't see the problem but then again I don't live nearby.

You must be joking.

Have you seen how many empty 'quality apartments' there are around Sefton? Fucking loads.

If this was going to be 'affordable housing' I'd agree with you but it's not.

Also - have you seen the kip of the fucking roads that surround sevvy park? I wouldn't want to pay 500k for a house and then drive my range rover across the afghan desert.

I live directly opposite the palm house and only see this as a step forward oye is getting 30,000 on the decent weather days with room to spare on that field, the field outside mine would easy hold 20,000 thats potentially a lot of extra revenues into the area why wouldnt the council want to exploit? larks in the park revisited would be a nice start...

On the surface, you would imagine this isn't really a bad thing, and in essence is just rubber stamping what is already in place in a less official manner.

One thing I would say though, is be careful what you wish for.

If it's a licenced park, is that just for special events, or whats to stop anyone rolling up with a few crates and a dozen mates and getting pissed in the park, just as long as they're not disturbing the peace?

If they're not causing a nuisance etc. the police would have no justification to move anyone on, or from getting rat arsed in the park every night.

As long as the peace isn't disturbed and there's no nuisance caused, is that necessarily a problem?  Recreational space for recreation, no?
