You definitely don't need a 3000 series for 1440p. I got a 1660S two months ago which has been amazing for that so far. My CPU is the old reliable Ryzen 5 3600.

I don't *need* it but games I want to play at the visual quality I want to play them at mean the 1080sc is struggling to get to a steady 40 fps. Your 1660 would be at 20, a 3080 up at 60+. That's all using a 3800x for Total War Warhammer 2. Warhammer 3 is released later next year.

Depends how important RT will be to you, the new amd cards look stronger than the equivalent nvidia at 1440p.

Is that the 6000 cards? Not seen much about them but the pricing relative to current Nvidia 3070/80. Will have a closer look, ta.

The review embargo and launch were yesterday, nvidia spanks amd on rt performance, 6800xt tends to win vs 3080 in 1080/1440 with results reversing at 4k, 6800 tends to lead 3070 throughout with the gap narrowing at 4k, but obviously the 6800 is also more expensive than the 3070.

Looks like I've managed to bag a 3070 FE for £550 and I can get £450 for my 2070 Super on eBay right now, which is £60 more than I paid for it a year ago!

Lovely upgrade for £100.

That's an insane price for people to be paying for a 2070, is that completed sales or just overly optimistic auctions?

There never seems to be any stock for 3xxx cards and the 2xxx series are the only cards on shelves so they're retaining their value well

I always check sold items on eBay, plenty of 400-450, it's mad as thats the RRP for 3070's.

Crazy times.

I've watched a lot of videos on RAM timings and product benchmarks but I still haven't got a clue.

There seems to be a decent uptick from 3200 to 3600 but not much when you then move to 4000

Also not much improvement from c16 to c14

So 3600 c16 still seems to be the sweetspot for these new chips?

Plus everything I look for is out of stock.....easily the most complicated aspect of a build!

Edit:

Thoughts on these?

Can anyone give me a steer here? 32gb of 3600 C14 or 64gb of 3600 C16?

32gb of C14 3600 would be the better option out of those two, it's a bit faster and 32gb is plenty too.

Yeah, the reason for the lack of improvement between 3600 and 4000 is a result of the limitiations of the infinity fabric of the Ryzen chips, which means that above 3600mhz RAM speed the buses are out of sync. AMD are supposedly working on a BIOS update to allow the Ryzen 5 chips to achieve 2000mhz FCLK, which should see a greater difference between 3600mhz and 4000mhz RAM, but they haven't really guaranteed that they can pull it off for everybody. Their statement:

"We are working on additional optimizations for 1900-2000MHz fabric clocks in our next AGESA release. AMD cannot guarantee any samples, including your own, will be able to hit these speeds. Although some current Ryzen 5000 samples are able to achieve a 1900+ fabric speed we feel confident even more users will be able to obtain these speeds with the forthcoming optimizations. If you recall on the 3000 series many, but not all, users were able to achieve a fabric speed of 1900. We believe this will be a similar situation with 5000 series processors and 2000MHz."

In regards to what Skeeve said, I'd also be going with the 32gb CL14.  I know that you love your overkill mate, but you really don't need 64GB of RAM.   ;D

I don't follow much in the way of hardware news - is there word on TI or Super versions of the 30 series in the new year? It's probably Autumn 2021 when I'm looking to build a new rig and hopefully supply issues will be all resolved by then (although the 40 series at that point could be right around the corner).

3060 Ti comes out December 2nd, a bit above the 2080 Super performance for the MSRP of the 3070. :/

3070 Ti rumored for Jan.

Thought it was a 3080 Ti that was rumoured to be early next year, a 3070 Ti would be using the same chip as the 3080 so wouldn't really make sense for them until they can actually satisfy demand for the 3080's.

So as a solid upgrade for my 1070... anything that's in stock is the way to go?

Is it odd to anyone else that the budget end of the nVidia GPU market has basically been cut adrift? For one of my HTPCs I picked up a used 1050 (from a decommissioned work machine so barely used), it's years old and there's virtually nothing been released to supplant it in the 'no additional power' area, literally my only upgrade optons would be 1050ti or 1650. Have they simply just reached the limits of what can be done with 75W of power?

Think it is more indicative of the lack of progress from the 1000 to the 2000-series, you get the incremental increase to a 1600-series, but due to the lack of RT performance it simply wasn't any point to them doing a 2050.

Both AMD and Nvidia should deliver a decent bump to the lower end at some point next year once the higher end models have got over their stock shortages.

On the HTPC front, I spent ages looking the other day and those were the only two options I could find. That said I'm happy with the iGPU in my 3200G for now, no problems with high bitrate 4K content. There are a lot of other compact options but at the bare minimim you need a 6 Pin connector. It's all overpriced at the moment anyway.

3070 will be a great upgrade over your 1070 if you can find it at a reasonable cost <= £550. Use StockInformer as I linked above, these are easier to grab than a 3080 or 6800XT

It'll be quite interesting to see just how close the 3060Ti gets to that one in performance, while still offering a decent reduction in both price and TDP.

"Your order is being processed and payment has been taken successfully.

This means your order is moving through our warehouse and will soon be passed over to our couriers for delivery."

"Deliver:   Tue 8th Dec 2020"
