D-Day for me tomorrow, decided enough is enough.  I'm 21 now and been off and on (mostly on these last 3 years) since I was 15/16.

No patches, pills or anything like that, just straight up willpower (and a bit of Allen Carr's writing I read on Wiki).  Worst part is I only bought a fresh pouch of baccy today, guess I'll be giving that to my mate.

D-Day for me tomorrow, decided enough is enough.
Three tips that worked for me, I hope they help:

1. Just tell yourself that you won't smoke tomorrow. 'Forever' is a too big a concept.

2. Refer to yourself/think of yourself as a non smoker. When someone offers you a cig, as they will, try and say - I don't smoke (instead of I've given up)

3. Stop putting cigs in your mouth - Seriously, it's amazing the way we can rationalise having a smoke. Stressed? Have a cig. Relaxed? Have a cig. Depressed. Have a cig. A need to celebrate. Have a cig.

What always happened to me was that I'd think - Shit I've gotta give up. I'd stop for a while. Then somewhere along the way I'd find some excuse to have one. Once I'd have the first one, it didn't matter anymore and I'd have another. I'd slowly start upping my intake until I was back to where I'd started. After a couple of months of that I'd think - Shit I've gotta give up...

Good luck, mate. It's well worth it.

or go through the "i'll give up once this is finished" phase, then you end up buying more ;D

Testimonials ha?

Well, I quit on New year (not as a NY resolution whatever crap, but because I smoked so much it made me sick) and haven't touched tobacco afterwards. Have been smoking since I was 15 (am now 29). Best (if not the only) advice I can give is to really take it ONE day at a time. Sometimes even one minute at a time. I struggled for the first month (as that was my short term plan) and every day was as hard as the one before, but after about 40 days grip released and I felt much better and more confident. Now it's relatively easy to keep this going and I'm looking forward to my new goal, half year without smoking...

I know it's usually a case of 'heard it all before' with me, but this time it's for real - I've given up. It's been 2 weeks today and I'm dealing with it very well. I'm usually fine doing it when I'm sober, but when drinking it goes tits up - not this time.

I think the difference is that this time it's actually the right time for me, I'm doing it because I really want to. I'm taking polos out with me and having one whenever I have a craving and it's working really well. I've had some heavy nights out and not given in to the temptation, and I was pissed for the whole of the last weekend and surrounded by people smoking, offering me ciggies, blowing smoke in my face etc etc and didn't give in - didn't even feel close to giving in, either.

It's part of an all-round change in my life really. I'm not happy with the state of my body so I'm starting to sort it out; eating healthier, doing more exercise and, of course, cutting out the smoking.

In some strange kind of way, I'm actually enjoying it. Every time I go out and don't smoke, or say no to a ciggie, I get a buzz off it, far better than the one I'd get from smoking. It's great.

Good work mate.  I cannot even fathom how difficult that must be because I'm still at a stage where I'm recognizing that there is indeed a problem.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

I quit like someone earlier in the thread, basically stopped smoking during the week and would only ever have smokes on the weekends while out drinking... I was like that for a few years thinking to myself "oh yeah it can't be that bad, I can probably quit whenever".

I actually found it much harder to take the final smaller step of quitting completely which I did about 10 months ago, so it may actually be easier to do the whole thing all at once.

One thing's for sure, quitting has been one of the best things I've ever done, every day I have this really low level feeling of happiness like a burden has been lifted off my back. Hard to explain until you have been through it.

Well done, you're well on the way to breaking the back of it.

A wise man (well it was Garreth, but you'll excuse the poetic license  :P )once said to me - 'Soon, you'll measure the time since your last cigarette in days, weeks, then months.' It's amazing how quickly the timescales recalibrate themselves- what once had to happen every hour or two of waking time becomes something increasingly distant and actually bizarre.

Three years plus now, and though I still bear the marks of having smoked for 19 years, I never regret that moment of absolute clarity and realising what a cretinous activity it was for a reasonably bright man, winding down the car window and binning that last half-smoked Marlboro.

Went cold Turkey last Monday - still holding out.

What made me stop was heart spasms I was getting, had me very concerned.

At the same time, Ive started eating healthier and riding bike to work.

Feel ten times better already.

Christ, when it's actually what you want, this is genuinely easy.

Had one in my hand on Wednesday night, lit, holding it for a mate while he went in the shop and I had no desire whatsoever to even think about smoking it. I was twatted, too.

Life is good.

5 weeks on Tuesday.

2 weeks on tuesday for me, not even been tempted.  Agree that it's something you have to want to do in order to have a decent crack at it.  I've been totally cold turkey and havent really wanted to smoke all that much.  Read a bit of Allan Carr's book on the web which helped sort my head out though.

Not had one since the 23rd Dec, when I had to go to the Hospital for a life saving operation to remove a Cancerous Tumour in my Bowel, which I never knew I had.

So far so good on the smoking I do miss it, but I dont have much choice. So far so good on the Cancer thing i think, have just completed my 3 lot of chemo.

Keep going to you all that have given up.
