I'd seen bits and pieces of Sunday Night Football, but I watched it properly for the first time yesterday and I thought it was superb. For all BT have tried to be innovative and exciting with their Premier League coverage (referee in the commentary box, picture-in-picture, that pitch they have in the studio), their European coverage has been more enjoyable and informative. BT have done very, very well with European football.

Think their European coverage has been superb from what I've seen on streams so far. It's the route Setanta and ESPN should have gone down. Good to see them commit to it and not simply view their European football as 2nd place to the Premiership. Probably best that way as well, as you have to wonder how many people are subscribing purely for the Premiership given they only have the one game a week.

The vast majority will subscribe for Premier League football (with Premiership rugby in second, I'd imagine), or because they get it free, via either BT themselves or Virgin. Viewing figures for European football haven't actually been that good; it's really just a nice bonus for those of us who appreciate it.

European coverage is great. Rarely watch the French football but they show loads of Serie A and Bundesliga which is brilliant really and their coverage of it is very good too.

Their premier league coverage isn't great but not arsed with that unless we're playing.

So far, thumbs up BT. Far more positives than negatives.

I guess we know now how it'll be paid for.

BT to hit millions with New Year price rise of up to 6.5pc
Millions of BT customers will see the price of their phone and broadband packages rise by up to 6.5 per cent in January to help pay for the telecom giant's Ł1bn investment in sports TV broadcasting.

BT is also increasing the "termination fees" on customers looking to leave mid-contract by as much as 30 per cent, and will also start charging for BT Answer 1571 for the first time.

Even the cost of calling Timeline, the old Speaking Clock, is going up from 34.4p per minute to 36.6p per minute, a rise of 6.3 per cent. Line rental is going up by 3.5 per cent.

Customers will receive details of the increases next week with the higher prices taking effect from January 4.

A BT spokesman justified the increases by explaining that BT was investing in "sport and superfast broadband". He added: "They are not the only things. We have shareholders and dividends to pay."

News of the price increase comes just 24 hours after BT was roundly criticised for delays to the roll-out of superfast broadband internet in rural parts of the country. MPs said BT had "exploited its quasi-monopoly position" as the main provider.

The increases will also trigger concerns that BT's ten million customers are having to foot the bill for its unprecedented investment in sports broadcasting.

BT has spent around Ł1bn in picking up the rights for live Premiership football and rugby games for its flagship BT Sport venture, designed to rival Sky. The group has signed up star presenters and pundits such as Clare Balding and Rio Ferdinand.

BT insisted earlier this summer that BT Sport would be "free or charge" to existing BT broadband customers. So far around a million have opted to receive the sports channels.

The price changes detailed by BT revealed that its standard line rental charge will rise from Ł15.45 to Ł15.99 a month.

BT's unlimited anytime call package, and its unlimited evening and weekend call plan, will remain unchanged. But customers on its unlimited anytime plus, unlimited anytime and mobile, and unlimited anytime plan will suffer increases of up to 6.4 per cent.

BT 1571 will now cost Ł1.75 a month, while the price of other 'Calling Features' will rise by 6.5 per cent. Anonymous Call Reject, used by households to combat nuisance or cold calls, will up to Ł4.75 a month.

Separate figures on Friday showed complaints about BT's broadband and TV service were on the rise. Ofcom said that BT broadband "generated complaints in excess" of the industry average, at 0.28 for every 1,000 customers, four times as many as Virgin Media.

Complaints about BT's TV service were six times the industry average.

does anyone still use the speaking clock service ?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23814934

The Ministry of Defence ran up a Ł40,000 bill on the speaking clock, despite a ban on staff calling it.

Employees were reportedly banned from dialling 123 to check the time.

They were given a list of websites they could use to get the time free, but calls have continued - costing a total of Ł40,000 in less than three years.

An MoD spokesman blamed the "inadvertent spending" on a technical fault and said calls to the speaking clock had now stopped.

The final bill for 2012 was Ł18,804 and Ł15,162 in 2011, with more than Ł6,000 already spent this year.

Over the period since the ban was announced, the MoD has made more than 130,000 calls at 30p each.
'Costly calls'

An MoD spokesman said: "A ban was introduced to our newest telephone network, but due to a technical error with some IT servers there has been some inadvertent spending on the speaking clock which has now been stopped.

"Overall spend on this has decreased from more than Ł15,000 in 2011 to just Ł6,000 this year since the ban was introduced."

Labour's shadow defence minister Kevan Jones accused minsters of breaking their promise to tackle waste by allowing "thousands of taxpayer pounds" to be "squandered on costly calls".

"Personnel who have been made redundant or the public who have heard warnings from senior officers about the government's defence cuts will worry that waste is continuing.

"It is essential that a full ban is implemented. Ministers must give the country confidence that waste, rather than capabilities, is being cut."

The speaking clock service was launched in 1936 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2011. It has never been a free service - in the early days, calls were one penny from home and two pence from a phone box.

It used to be called Tim as people would dial the first three letters of the word "time". It is now officially called Timeline.

In 2007, Sara Mendes da Costa from Brighton won a competition to become the fourth permanent voice for the speaking clock in a BT competition that raised Ł200,000 for BBC Children In Need.

Back on topic I hope that BT will honour any deals made when negotiating the 12 month extensions we had to agree when taking on BT Sport.

But for anyone that hasn't done so - look at taking on the BT Line Rental Saver to avoid the Price Rise. Also, if you are on one of the higher Broadband Packages, check how much extra it actually is for unlimited calls - by moving from Option 1 to Option 2 (40MB) I have been promised to get it for Ł5 rather than Ł7 (thinking about that I do need to check they have done that...)

Not a bad bunch of fixtures for BT Sport over the festive period.

City vs Arsenal, City vs LFC and Utd vs Spurs stand out

Crystal Palace v West Ham - Tuesday December 3, 8pm

That subscription fee is starting to bite me in the ass a bit. Its not sane paying that much for telly. I would genuinely get rid of it only for the European football coverage. No other sports coverage I enjoy more, I think Carra and Neville have the edge in analysis, but for sheer entertainment factor its Jimbo and the lads all the way.

I wouldn't be surprised to see ITV lose it's rights. I doubt they have the money to win a bidding war against BT depending on how much BT have left to spend.

I actually think the team of people BT use for their European Football coverage could do the CL coverage really well. Jake Humphrey and his gaggle of knobheads not so much.

Think Uefa have a rule where some games must be on free TV due to advertising interests (like F1),  so BT will be after Sky's game package.

It's not a rule set in stone - other countries have seen their free-to-air coverage ended - but I think UEFA do value the viewing figures and exposure that ITV gives the Champions League, to the extent that it's not necessarily a case of highest bid wins (for their one package, anyway).

BT Sport 1 is free on Freeview this week and next. Not on Sky or Virgin until WC 26/10 though, only freeview.

Quote
BT Sport 1 will be available on Freeview for free for two weeks in October.

On the weeks beginning October 7 and October 14, the channel will be available to watch for free on Freeview channel 57.

Any customer with a digital terrestrial TV service ought to be able to pick this channel up, meaning YouView customers, including TalkTalk TV customers, ought to be able to get it to.

Throughout the week, viewers will be able to tune in to the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifier between Spain and Belarus, the England vs Lithuania UEFA U21 qualifier between and Bundesliga action between 1899 Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen.

There will also be live UFC action and discussion programmes Life’s a Pitch, Rugby Tonight and Beyond the Octagon, talking about football, rugby and UFC respectively

On top of this, Freeview viewers along with Sky, Virgin Media and BT TV customers who aren’t already subscribing to BT Sport will get the channel free across on the weekend beginning October 26.

Live Premier League football games broadcast over that weekends include Crystal Palace vs Arsenal. Live Aviva Premiership rugby includes Bath vs Gloucester, Northampton vs Saracens and Wasps vs Leicester.

BT currently has no plans to launch BT Sport on Freeview full time, but it’s keen on enticing viewers to sign up for either BT Vision or BT YouView. Both of these TV platforms come with the same digital terrestrial channels you’d get on Freeview, plus a range of extra channels, including BT Sport delivered over your broadband connection.

Sky TV customers can subscribe directly to BT Sport through their Sky+HD box or get the standard definition channels free if they switch to BT Broadband.

Virgin Media customers can also subscribe to BT Sport (in HD only), with Virgin TV XL customers getting the shows for free.

http://recombu.com/digital/news/bt-sport-1-free-on-freeview-sky-virgin-bt-free-weekend_M12232.html

Looked into this a bit further. It's only available Monday to Friday from 7pm, not the weekend.

Is Michael Owen in any of these chat shows? I imagine viewing figures will go through the roof if that's the case.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Let's hope so. I could do with going to sleep early the next few days.

Not a bad bunch of fixtures for BT Sport over the festive period.

City vs Arsenal, City vs LFC and Utd vs Spurs stand out

Crystal Palace v West Ham - Tuesday December 3, 8pm
Swansea v Newcastle - Wednesday December 4, 7.45pm
Manchester United v Newcastle - Saturday December 7, 12.45pm
Manchester City v Arsenal - Saturday December 14, 12.45pm
Liverpool v Cardiff - Saturday December 21, 12.45pm
West Ham v Arsenal - Boxing Day, 3pm
Manchester City v Liverpool - Boxing Day, 5.30pm
Southampton v Chelsea - New Year's Day, 3pm
Manchester United v Tottenham - New Year's Day, 5.30pm

I think thats quite impressive compared with Sky (obviously Sky have twice as much but there's some very medioche games in this selection, Hull 3 times anyone?)

Sat 7: Sunderland v Tottenham (ko 5.30pm)
Sun 8: Fulham v Aston Villa (ko 1.30pm)
Sun 8: Arsenal v Everton (ko 4pm)
Mon 9: Swansea City v Hull City (ko 8pm)

Sat 14: Hull City v Stoke City (ko 5.30pm)
Sun 15: Aston Villa v Man Utd (ko 1.30pm)
Sun 15: Tottenham v Liverpool (ko 4pm)

Sun 22: Southampton v Tottenham (ko 1.30pm)
Sun 22: Swansea City v Everton (ko 4pm)
Mon 23: Arsenal v Chelsea (ko 8pm)

Thu 26: Hull City v Man Utd (ko 12.45pm)
Sat 28: West Ham v West Brom (ko 12.45pm)
Sat 28: Cardiff City v Sunderland (ko 5.30pm)
Sun 29: Newcastle United v Arsenal (ko 1.30pm)
Sun 29: Chelsea v Liverpool (ko 4pm)

Wed Jan 1: Swansea v Man City (ko 12.45pm)

Macca's like, "I know, mate."  ;D

I can't help but imagine he's a bit of a tit behind the scenes, with all that knowing cheeky 'banter' but without the commanded respect or real charm to be able to properly get away with it. You wouldn't really get reactions like that if it was the likes of Jocky or Digger cracking those little jibes. Doesn't necessarily mean he's an awful presenter and I can't stand him (like a few I could mention), but he doesn't make a great impression, if you ask me.

A lot of this is, arguably, down to Sky using up a lot of their "first picks" in an attempt to kill off BT from the start. As a result, IIRC bt still have 13/14 'first picks' for the last 19 weeks of the season.
