If I activate the iPhone on iTunes on a different computer to my own, will I then be able to use it on my own computer with iTunes, is it simply activating the phone or does it 'stick' to that computer?
It only activates it, you can sync it with your own computer later.

Do a restart, ie hold both hardware buttons till the apple sign pops up, if that does not work, do a restore, if its still not working book in for a free appointment at an apple store.

What do you get for that £20 Roy? I take it you would still qualify for upgrades if you choose to upgrade to the new one when it comes out? Did u bother with o2 insurance?

£20 a month Simplicity gets you 700 mins, 1200 texts and unlimited web.

I can't fucking wait to downgrade off this £35 a month one - I'll be doing the same as you, Roy.

Also, I don't think they offer any upgrade options on the iPhone anymore. Once your contract expires you simply get a new one. The bonus is that you can sell your old handset for a pretty penny if you've looked after it.

Am off to the Apple Store this evening to try and get my handset changed. The bastard is cracked about an inch up the back from the dock connector - I believe it's a common problem so I'm hoping for a straight swap.

Just checked online - seems you only get a one year warranty so mine will probably be outside of mine. Will have to do my best to argue the case.

EDIT: Yep - out of warranty. Probably been there for a while but because I keep my phone in a rubber case I haven't noticed it. Argh.

Got the same crack on mine and it's out of warranty.  Main problem was that I was lazy and didn't bother getting it sorted in the previous 3 months before my warranty ran out.  The best damage that my phone has is the silent button coming off.  Now I can't accidentally put it onto silent when I put it in my pocket.

Hehe. Haven't bothered trying to get it replaced when out of warranty then, Robbo?

I haven't tried, I should do but it means restoring to stock before taking it into the shop.  Perhaps I will attempt this to see what they say.  I doubt they'll do anything.  The dock connector crack though is common enough to warrant replacement.

My old 16Gb 3g had the usual crack on it and i still managed to get £250 on eBay for it.

I bought a new 32Gb 3gs outright as they only offered £150 for the old one as part of an upgrade and i didnt want to be tied in for 18mnths-24mnths.

I have a crack in mine in the same place but it's only about 1cm long so it's not major, still think i should take it to apple and get a swap as it's still in warranty...?

Well I was 38 days out of warranty but they still replaced it as a "customer service". Emphasised how well I looked after it (it was in mint condition) and they were happy to swap it. Chuffed.

it's a design fault, they'll replace it regardless of warranty for this reason, if they didn't it would end up with a class action suit against them

Badge - gives an icon a marker when there is an update (eg a red 1 if you have an email)
Alerts - gives a pop up message on screen when you have an update
Sounds - plays a sound when you have an update

Mine has started hanging up when I try and sync to iTunes on my PC

Sits there suncing for ages then comes up with some form of timeout message "phone cannot be synced, unable to write to phone memory" any tips?

Cheers for the help Something Else.  I thought that had fixed it but then next time I tried, same problem.  I think I have now traced the problem and I thought I'd stick it up here in case anyone has anything similar.

It seems that when I have a USB memory stick withmy work on it inserted in the other USB port then iTunes finds the phone but is unable to write to the disk and hence unable to Sync.  Remove the memory from the other USB port and it works fine.

Strange.

Changed to Simplicity (£20pcm) in the O2 shop today. The guy said they thought the new one would be out about August, and I smiled to myself when he said "you could go online and read rumours about what's going to come out, but nobody really knows - last year we were guessing about what the 3Gs would be like, but all the rumours were wrong".

So Simplicity for the next few months...

I did the same online this evening. 1400 texts and 700 mins for £20 with unlimited web. Can't be bad. The saving is an extra night in the pub a month.

This is exactly what mine was like. Worth taking back and swapping, especially if you're within warranty - it'll help the resale value of the phone.

About to change simplicity online, they mention sending a Sim but do they for existing o2 customers?  seems far to easy to switch online so thinking there may be some catch/fuck up their end?

A bunch of us on this thread have already done it.  You have a choice of wifi or unlimited data, in most cases the data bolt on is the way to go.

My post a little further up the page gives the link for o2's instructions on what you have to change in your settings for it to work.

yeah i'm following your lead but o2 never seem to play nice.
did you just log in to o2, select the simplicity tariff and that was it - you just start paying the lower rate?

Log in, request an upgrade code, receive it and use it, select simplicity £20 with unlimited data bolt on, go through check out process, order is pending & within a couple of hours it'll be confirmed.
You then follow the instructions to change your settings that I linked to above.
All done, easy, peasey.
