There's been an adequate break between games. I heard he was carrying a knock a couple of weeks back so it might be that he wasn't training as hard as he should have been. When encouraged to attack, as we were against Chelsea, if a player is slightly below par in terms of fitness they will be affected by that. He's a player who needs rest between matches and he's had that.

Thing with Fabio is that he's a pure wingback rather than a fullback. He's a very good defender, if he's in the position to be. A lot of times he simply isn't - because his natural position is more attacking than a fullback like Arbeloa. He's already making forward runs before the ball is ready to be played out of defense. You only have to look at Carra/Skrtel's distribution to see evidence of this. They pass to Arby a lot because he's always in a safe position to receive it - Aurelio by comparison is much further forward. Dossena is very similar in this respect.

Fabio is just pure class. I hope he takes more of our freekicks with Stevie in the line-up or not.

Include corners with that an all Gerrard would be better of in and around the box to be honest his corners have never been that great.

Aurelio is Rafas number 1 so thats good enough for me , i'm also not that sure insua has truly been tested defensively by a high quality tricky winger which makes me a bit wary of him.
I've seen him have a few ropey displays defensively for the reserves thats not to say he doesn't step it up for the first's, but i do think Rafa will always trust Aurelio more and pick him ahead of Insua as long as he's fit.

Fabio had a great game for us against Spurs to finish the season. His passing and crossing was on the money and he was charging forward a lot. Great to see.

What a surprise - he steered clear of any long term injuries and had his best season in a Red shirt.

A strong 7/10 performer all year long, he put in great performances in all our key victories, did a great job on the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo, got more involved in our attacking play and even started showing us exactly why he is known as a free kick specialist... best of all it was at United and Chelsea's expense.

I've said since day one he's a top player - just unlucky with injuries and lacks a bit of pace. Hopefully Insua will continue to develop and next season Fabio and him will have a cracking year as master and apprentice.

I think Insua has been more consistent when he's played.

Insua and that goal against Hull?

can be forgiven when its your first real season of first team footy

Aurelio is a very good left back just too bad he has had injurys every time he was getting into some real great form

How many games did he end up playing? Seems like more than one could have dared hope. Fingers crossed now with Insua showing he's more than capable of stepping in we can be a bit more picky with the games we use Fabio in. Keep the lad from falling apart on us.

Insua and that goal against Hull?

That's about Insua's only mistake. He's been very solid which is extremely impressive considering his age.

There is one of two things I want from a young, promising player. 1) Very solid performances. 2) That he mixes the odd poor performance with very, very good ones. The first indicates consistency, the second that there's pure talent, but a lack of experience.

Insua has consistency, quality and almost no mistakes to his name. That mistake vs Hull is the only one of note. He's never looked out of place. It's the opposite, it's like he's played at the highest level for years.

If he can keep his focus and his feet on the ground, he could be fantastic for us.

We should count our blessings that we have 2 close to world class left backs at the club. Insua has really come on this season and Fabio is just fab. With Buchtmann coming through as well the future is very bright on that side as Fabio is basically still a low mileage player.

I reckon Fabio could have added significantly to his goals/assists if he had been taking our set pieces from early on in the season - seems he only really started to be given the chance in Jan/Feb and by March the quality of his delivery was spot on and for the rest of the season team-mates seemed more happy to let Fabio try taking them too.

I think rafa realised he couldn't play more than 1 game a week without risking injury. Hence we had Dossenna / Insua in for some games (when say we were saving aurelio for a more important one less than a week later.)

Really good season, I'd say on balance there's a shout that he's the best left back in the league. The pacey left backs get the headlines because they have recovery pace to bomb up and down the wing (and make up for poor positioning / getting skinned) : see evra/clichy. But neither of them has had a good season. If you don't rate Cole, aurelio is your man: solid defensively, contributes going forward.

I'm not. He and Rafa clearly adore each other. His family seems settled and he seems happy with the club and the city.  If he goes anywhere else, it will probably be back to Spain and I'm not sure he wants to start over with another manager who will probably not understand or trust him to the extent Rafa does.

BTW I'm sure in an earlier interview, Rafa mentioned Aurelio as one who he would like to sort out ASAP.

I'm actually more worried about Arbeloa, some on TLW seem to think he will be sold to Seville.

Think that is more likely as there has been word for some time about him being homesick, and did the Carra thing just highlight an underlying problem. Sevilla would be a good bet as they have just qualified for the Champions League and will be wanting CL experience.

With Insua competing for the LB position, it no longer is our weakest link. If both are injured, there's always The Doss although I think he might be on his way out. I'd like to get another look at him again this season and hope he becomes who he's supposed to be.

RB may be more of a problem because of lack of cover for Arby.
