Right chaps; can anyone tell me how can I set this up to dual boot with XP? I'll use a separate drive for Windows 7 so no partitioning needed, I don't think. But I've never set up a dual boot system before so assume I'm an idiot :)

Ta in advance

as above.. when you put it on the other drive, it'll automatically give you a boot menu whenever your computer boots.. not like the old days when you had to rewrite boot.ini yerself!

I've decided what I like best about this... it plays DivX without having to download any codecs. Finally. It's the small things that make the difference

You're talking about Windows Media Player? Any idea what music formats it plays straight off? I'd be interested in flac and OGG playback out of the box.

run setup, point at partitioned space on separate drive, the end.

Cheers both :wave

It was that last bit, the setting up of the boot menu that I was most unsure of.

Like I said, I've not even tried setting up a dual boot before so it hasn't really figured; I guessed about pointing setup to the relevant drive or partition but wasn't sure about creating the boot menu; nice to see it's automatic. Thanks for your help.

If it ever arrives. Its status has gone from 4-5 days delivery to 'out of stock' since I placed the order.

If you go here you can download it and they give you a key.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

It only seems to download if you use Explorer. couldn't get it to start downloading in Firefox.

Seems to be the same few keys getting given out, from what I've heard. Use Google to search for your key and it should come up somewhere else.

Can get the same thing off TPB or Demonoid then.

Ok having used this for 24 odd hours, it seems to be a little clunky compared to Vista, I suppose this is to be expected.  How would I go about getting Vista back should I decide to leave it.... just full system restore?

Anyone got any teaks e.t.c i.e turning off search indexing like I did with Vista....

what im thinking is, if we install and use windows 7, and come autumn or whenever they release the official version, what happens to our beta installation???

can we simply upgrade to the new version + new serial ?
or will we have to install a new version thus losing all content and configurations ?

you'll likely have to reinstall and wipe the old beta from your drive

you'll do this anyways as the beta will end months before it's released so you'd essentailly have a dead pc if you didn't

Or you could patch it, or download the actual release when it comes out from a Bit torrent website, but us law abiding folk here would never stoop to such levels of criminality ;)

I have an old P4 that I'm considering putting the beta on.  Has anyone tried home networking with it yet.  I have some issues with a DLINK wireless card in that particular PC which will pick up my intenet connection via the router OK but struggles with shared drives on my server (both running appropriated XP SP2).  Wonder if W7 will fare any better?

blah.... linux is good.....
the only bad point id say, is that companies that make software are dedicating it toward the microsoft market, thus limiting variety on linux... but for those programs that you cannot get, there generally is a program of similar function ;)

Ok I put it on my computer and all went well.

Looked interesting for about a half a hour then I got the blue screen of death and now the computer won't start in normal windows mode after you get the welcome to windows screen it crashes to the Blue screen of death again. Last night I used my laptop to get on the Internet.

And I'm having to use this computer with Windows 7 in safemode with network surpport.

anyone else had this problem thought I would ask before I try to remove it.

I removed a windows update that it did after I put Windows 7 on and it all seems to be working ok again.

I've been holding off on getting any new Vista based PC's at work due to all the issues that Vista seems to have, on with downloading this now.
If it's as good as people say it Is, hopefully will be able to bypass Vista completely :)

Just installed it there a few minutres ago. Pretty quick install, took about half and hour.

Love this new taskbar so far and how it fades in and out the windows you're hovering over. Very slick and smooth.
