Windows Vista released!
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:21:06 am »
Got my copy of Windows Vista Home Basic ($119+tax CAD - OEM) a couple days early.

It's brilliant. Just wow. I'm sure I'll be used to it in a few days but for now I'm in a permanent state of awe. Everything is so streamlined, sleek, smooth. Clean. It all just feels good.

;D

When I bought my new Dell in the New Year, I got a free upgrace to Vista.

Should I bother getting it???

I have XP MCE edition on here at the mo - and also some, ahem, software that I acquired by other means!

Will running Vista effect this?

If its free get it, especially as XP MCE upgrades to Home premium.

It certainly is nicer looking if such things are important to you in your OS, and more secure as well, although not necessarily at first , plus if you're a gamer you'll need to get it in the end anyway for DX10 support, just be careful checking that everything on your system is compatible with it before installing

I'll be looking to buy a new system this Autumn, so hopefully any problems will have been ironed out by then (plus the DX10 gpu's will be at the £100 level).

Home basic doesn't have Aero or the media centre.

By the way Smiff there's a few more "movies" of Crysis in game released, does look very good.

How much more space does it take than XP?  Is it worth upgrading or realistically would it be better to upgrade the whole laptop?

Also does it just use the same setup as th XP - just a 25 digit code?

When I was doing some digging around looking for a new computer, I was advised that to run Vista to its best, that I would need 2gb of RAM, which I have.

However, I am sure I have recently seen a few systems being sold with Vista upgrade but only wtih512mb RAM.

Please note though, that I know next to nothing about computers!!!!!!!!!!

512Mb's the minimum, 1Gb is the recommended minimum, 2Gb's about the optimum.

jackh- go to the Vista site for the full details. It's up to you if you think what it offers is worthwhile upgrading for.

The vista site has a utility you can download which will tell you what version your computer can support.
I have a 4 year old sony desktop, with 2gb memory, a 3gzh processor, and it told me I could only upgrade to the basic version, which isn't what I'd want.

What graphics card do you have?

I'd guess it may be the issue

I suspect you're right, but haven't had the time to do the research on this.  It's a Nvidia GeForce FX5600.

Interesting, I received an email from compuserve, who I use for one of my email services, stating that CS software won't work on vista, and no plans to get it upgraded to work either (guess their trying to use this to get the last remnants of their customer base switched over to AOL)

Not worth the 60$ difference for looks when this looks fantastic anyways, and I'm going to be getting a new computer and selling this one within 6 months.

You can't get an OEM upgrade.  OEM's are for distrubution with a new PC and are full versions.

If you search eBay for 'oem vista home premium 64' there's only 2 matches.  The auction one is mine, there is one on a Buy It Now which gives an idea of what I'm lookin for (although I don't charge shipping)

The idea that you need to have some state of the art computer to run Vista well is a stupid myth created by the Vista reviewers online (dont' know why).

The technology in my computer is 5 years old and it runs Vista very well.

There's a new rating system for how powerful your computer is - it is shown in the attachment below. It uses a rating based on an index from 1-5.9. If your computer's rating is 1 it means you can just barely just Vista. 5.9 means you're free and clear to do any kind of sweet gaming you want. For the rating it takes the lowest of the 5 different sub-scores.

Mine has 512MB of 266Mhz RAM and that ends up being the lowest score (2.9). It all runs fine but Vista does eat up quite a lot of RAM. It is definetly a good idea to use Vista on a 1GB RAM computer or upgrade to 1gb. (I'm not upgrading since I'm selling this computer in due time anyways.) As you can see below, nearly 400MB of my (admittedly slow) RAM is being used up even though I'm not really doing much. Despite this observation, I haven't noticed any sudden dramatic slowdowns that would be as a result of lack of RAM and the OS seems to be running just as well as XP.

Nope...certainly no OEM versions available at online sites anywhere...

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=33&catid=20

Oh wait.

Overclockers did get in trouble actually (someone i know works for novatech) for releasing this already and not on the 30th like ms wanted them to with a possiblity of being sued I'd guess for loss of revenue over other vendors.  Two of my friends pre-ordered it with them and got it sent about 3-4 days ago.

I bought an OEM copy and installed it on my old system.

Bought it from a small computer hardware/software dealer I know.

www.pccomponentscanada.com

vista home basic $119, vista home premium $149, vista business $199, vista ultimate $269

E-mail him with your purchase request at salesdesk@pccomponentscanada.com

Due to export restrictions he can't ship to the UK so this is only good for anyone inside North America.

OEM versions are full versions but have acitvation restrictions, unlike the retail which can be used as many times as you wish.  Originally the OEM versions were restricted to only one configuration of PC at the time of initial activiation, this has now changed to relax limitations on removable hardware such as graphics cards but does count for motherboard.  So, in short, you can change your setup except your motherboard, which constitues a new PC and the reason the OEM versions are half the price of the full retails, you will no longer be able to use it.

Cracking methods seem to be of the same type as in XP...that is, a manual activation option (calling customer support), giving them the code generated by windoze, and then typing in the return code that the operative would have given you.  Of course, it didnt take long for keygens to appear to do the same thing or even cracks to remove the necesity entirerly. You miss out on legitimate support (but there is no tech support with OEM anyway) and updates but serves you for pirating it anyway lol

Just been chatting to my friends and one says he has seen awful performance using the vista nvidia drivers on all but WoW and my other friend cannot even get 8800 drivers at all.  They are all at early beta stage only and he is not willing to risk using them.  So getting it early from overclockers wasnt such a great idea!

Overall they like the look and feel (once you get rid of the annoying dim-wit pop up 'help' boxes) and say it runs very nice.  As for anyone desperate to upgrade, wait.  One of them is thinking about putting XP back on already so he can play all his games again!!
