Judge again blocks US from resuming federal executions

A federal judge in Washington, D.C. once again blocked the Trump administration from resuming executions just hours before the first federal death sentence since 2003 was scheduled to be carried out.

Judge Tanya Chutkan on Monday ordered a preliminary injunction against the government while the courts hear a legal challenge from four death row inmates against the administration's new execution protocols announced last summer.

The ruling is the second injunction Chutkan has issued in the case. A similar order from last November was overturned by an appeals court and the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

Better than that. It will be an updated version of Love Connection. Governors will have to compete to see who declares their Trump love in the most biglyest way. The winner will get federal funding to build a series of statues of Trump, plus a week's stay at their choice of Trump country clubs, AND a free Confederate flag. The losers will have COVID-19 injected straight into their deep-state radical-left veins.

Seems stupid from Mueller. He led the investigation and spent lots of time and money on it. He couldn't nail Trump. So now they think he could have done more? How weird is that? Why on Earth didn't he complete the job?

Mueller was a career prosecutor being asked to make a political call - whether a president could be charged with criminal conduct.  I'm not surprised he wussed out, given standing convention on the matter.

What these career prosecutors and investigators didnt realise, or chose to ignore, was just how much the game had changed with such a brazenly corrupt president, backed by a servile GOP Senate and an attorney general running interference.

Whether Mueller regrets his choices we probably wont know for sure, unless he lays his cards on the table in front of Lyndsay Graham.

Frankly, I'm very suspicious why Graham has picked now of all times to ask Mueller to testify. Might be trying to do a hatchet job on him,  or spin a yarn of election interference to benefit the Democrats.

Harvard, MIT sue to block Trump administration from stripping student visas amid pandemic

Harvard and MIT filed a lawsuit on Wednesday that seeks to prevent the Trump administration from stripping foreign students of visas if their universities move exclusively to online classes amid the pandemic.

The universities asked a federal court in Boston for a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction against the administration's plan to require international students whose courses move entirely online to depart the country.

Nearly 60 universities file brief backing challenge to ICE rule on foreign students

Quote
Nearly 60 public and private universities are supporting a lawsuit seeking to block the Trump administration from stripping foreign students of visas at colleges that opt against in-person classes this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Quote
Fifty-nine colleges filed an amicus brief in court on Sunday backing Harvard and MIT's legal action. The schools — based in 24 states and Washington, D.C. — have a combined 213,00 international students enrolled, according to the brief. The schools include Georgetown, Stanford, Arizona State University and Yale.

"A fundamental principle of administrative law is that the government must provide a reasoned explanation for its actions and consider all important aspects of a problem before imposing burdens on regulated parties," the brief sates. "The July 6 Directive fails this basic requirement."

The universities also argued that college leaders relied on federal guidance allowing international students to remain in the country while taking online classes in preparation for the fall term. In March, ICE officials said that international students would be granted an exemption from attending in-person classes throughout the duration of the public health emergency.

"The emergency persists, yet the government’s policy has suddenly and drastically changed, throwing [schools'] preparations into disarray and causing significant harm and turmoil," the universities said.

Abortions are a risk to life though...

Trump admin lifts ban on sales of silencers to private foreign buyers

The Trump administration moved Friday to end a long-standing ban on the sale of gun silencers, also known as suppressors, to foreign buyers, handing a victory to firearm manufacturers.

The New York Times reported that the ban's end, which occurred Friday, followed lobbying efforts by Michael Williams, a deputy assistant to President Trump and White House lawyer who formerly ran a trade group representing silencer manufacturers.

“This is another win for the firearm and suppressor manufacturers by the Trump administration,” a spokesperson for the National Shooting Sports Foundation told the Times.

Williams's efforts to lobby the State Department to lift the ban began shortly after he followed former acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to the West Wing following the latter's appointment, according to White House officials who spoke to the Times.

Williams declined to comment to the Times, and the White House did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill or the Times.

The State Department originally implemented the ban in 2002, with the intention of preventing U.S.-made silencers from falling into the hands of terrorist groups.

A State Department spokeswoman told the Times that the change was made to help U.S. manufacturers and noted that the availability of silencers in other countries had risen since the ban was implemented.

"U.S. companies should have the same opportunity to compete in the international marketplace as other manufacturers around the world,” said the spokeswoman.

The Trump administration's decision to expand the sale of firearm suppressors to foreign buyers follows a Democratic push last year to completely ban the sale or manufacture of such devices in the U.S. in response to a shooting in Virginia Beach in which 12 people were killed; the gunman allegedly used a handgun with a suppressor and extended magazines.

Muller being a Republican has nothing to do with it. He did exactly the job he was supposed to do. It was all there in his report, but the Republican's wanted no part of it. Now, maybe Muller failed to do the job he needed (or we needed him) to do, but that's not his fault. He could not have known in advance the near total abdication of responsibility by elected Republicans (with the notable exception of Romney).

I do wonder, though, if he will change his approach when giving testimony with the latest investigation.

Mueller would have brought about the biggest constitutional crisis in the modern era if he'd recommended/tried to arrest a sitting President of the United States. I don't blame him at all for not going through with it, he'd have been the public enemy number 1 to a bunch of nutjobs with no guarantee that it would be worth it given the make up of the Supreme Court and the DoJ basically being Trump's personal protection agency.

That stupid DoJ memo needs to be decided in front of the supreme court asap as to its legality. Should literally be one of the first things Biden does as it helps clear the situation up and makes a statement on how he is different to Trump.

I'm really surprised by some of the comments in here, particularly since there have been some excellent good podcasts about the entire procedure and rationale behind everything Mueller did, so I'm firmly with Jiminy here.

Mueller knew his brief and scope and completed it best he could against the barriers put up.
The Trump administration broke the law in failing to cooperate, Trump told lies in his written response. If Mueller had access to more info there'd have been more indictments.
The Democrats declined to Impeach Trump for those actions.
Nobody knows how many further sealed indictments there are.
Bill Barr gave the report his own twisted, diluted and corrupt interpretation which senior GOP officials swallowed and negligently failed to address.
This is the most corrupt, closed-ranked entire administration in history that still prefers the word of Russia to its own security services - that's what Mueller was up against.
Now the Stone case is over Mueller may be able to elaborate a bit more on his findings.
And there's lots more of course.

Cuomo poster depicts Trump as 'man in the moon' watching coronavirus pandemic

Quote
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) unveiled a poster Monday depicting New York’s experience during the coronavirus pandemic, including President Trump as the “man in the moon.”

The governor added the pandemic-themed poster to a collection that are styled on those of the the early 20th century.

The poster depicts a mountain with a yellow line above it, representing the curve of the COVID-19 cases in New York. Symbols are used to show what took place during the period.

“I did a new one for what we went through with COVID[-19] and I think the general shape is familiar to you,” Cuomo said when announcing the poster at a press conference on Monday.

Federal judges block abortion ban laws in Tennessee, Georgia

Two of the country's strictest abortion laws were blocked by federal judges on Monday.

A federal court in Georgia on Monday permanently blocked the state's "heartbeat" law that banned physicians from performing an abortion once a fetus’ “heartbeat” can be detected — usually about six weeks into a pregnancy and before many women know they’re pregnant.

Meanwhile, a federal judge in Tennessee issued a temporary restraining order to block a law that would have essentially banned abortion at nearly every stage of pregnancy, less than an hour after Gov Bill Lee (R) signed it.

In Georgia, District Judge Steve C. Jones ruled that the law violated a woman’s constitutional right to access to abortion, as established by the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that established a woman's right to abortion.

A woman has a "constitutional liberty ... to have some freedom to terminate her pregnancy,” Jones wrote.

Jones last year temporarily blocked the law from going into effect while the case played out in court. It was set to take effect on Jan. 1.

The state is expected to appeal.

In Tennessee, District Court Judge William Campbell, Jr. issued a temporary restraining order effective until July 27.

Abortion rights groups Planned Parenthood, Center for Reproductive Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit in June after the bill passed the state Senate in an early morning vote.

The ban was in effect for less than an hour before being blocked by the court.

Similar six-week abortion bans have been struck down in Mississippi, Ohio and other states. States have been passing the laws in an attempt to get the Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade.

The Georgia and Tennessee rulings come two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, struck down a Louisiana law that required abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

The impression I got of Robert Mueller throughout the Russia Investigation (and in particular his testimony in front of congress) is that he's a massive square.

I understand that as a federal investigator he needs to follow certain protocols and be seen to be impartial

But fuck me, he could have done a hell of a lot more to ram it home to Republicans that they were defending the indefensible

He should have gone balls to the wall to nail Trump, particularly when the Dems gave him ample opportunity to do so

Instead he sat there like a stiff answering questions with "that's correct", "that's true", "that's accurate".

When it comes to Mueller, the question will be whether history remembers him as the guy who passed the ball to the politicians, knowing full well they'd drop it?

Unless he's had time to reflect and come to a different conclusion based on the very real threat he must now realise Trump poses to US institutions, then I can only assume this new round of questioning is mere window dressing for Republicans to push the "Russian Hoax" narrative in the run up to the election.

If he's pissed off at how his work was hijacked and disseminated then he wont have another chance to affect the state of political play.

This guy is fucking spineless and useless. No wonder he likes Trump.

Mexican president: 'I don't have an opinion' on border wall

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday he has no opinion on construction of a wall between the United States and Mexico.

López Obrador told reporters at his daily press conference that border wall construction — a key component of President Trump's hardline immigration policy — is not an issue for Mexico because it wasn't discussed last week during his visit to the White House.

"Well, I don't have an opinion because it's a topic that wasn't discussed — it's not on our agenda," said López Obrador.

The president was severely criticized at home and among Mexican Americans after his trip to Washington, where he was laser-focused on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade and seemed to go out of his way to laud Trump's treatment of Mexicans in the United States.

López Obrador said Monday that he maintains cordial relations with Trump to avoid any confrontation with the U.S. government.

"I want to maintain a friendly relationship with the United States government because I think it's convenient for Mexicans. My adversaries wanted something else — they wanted a fight and it wasn't so. We need to have a cooperative and friendly relationship with the U.S. government," said López Obrador.

Before taking office in December 2018, López Obrador had been one of Trump's harshest critics in Mexico, even writing a book called "Listen, Trump" while on the campaign trail.

"The wall and the demagoguery of patriotism are no match for the dignity and humanity of the American people," López Obrador wrote in the book.

But that criticism has waned, particularly as the coronavirus recession has ravaged Mexico's economy.

López Obrador hailed his Washington visit as a triumph because Trump "spoke of 36 million Mexicans in the United States."

López Obrador later acknowledged that he does not support the wall, but refused to discuss his opposition and instead blamed Republicans and Democrats for its construction.

"I'm not going to confront [Trump] on that issue that we don't even want to mention. I only remember that every U.S. government has insisted on that issue, whether it's one party or the other," López Obrador said. "And we don't agree with that issue — we don't address it, we're thankful it wasn't addressed, that issue or others, and that the visit was focused on the free trade agreement that we care about very much."

Chance the Rapper voiced his support for Kanye West’s presidential bid Monday on Twitter, saying he trusts West more than presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Chance, who was featured on West’s 2017 song “Ultralight Beam,” wrote, “And yall out here tryna convince me to vote for Biden. Smfh.”

He was met with a wave of backlash when he followed up by asking his followers, “Are u more pro biden or anti ye and why?”

Are u more pro biden or anti ye and why? I get that you’ll want to reply that you’re just tryna “get trump out” but in this hypothetical scenario where you’re replacing Trump, can someone explain why Joe Biden would be better??

— Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) July 13, 2020

Six hours later, more than 12,000 people had replied, and the Chicago rapper became a trending topic on Twitter.

“I understand,” Chance wrote. “Yall trust Biden more than yall trust Ye. I think I understand why, I just don’t feel the same way.”

West announced he was running for president on the Fourth of July, though he has not filed any official paperwork and so far is not set to appear on any state’s ballots.

While he generated a media frenzy, his candidacy is not being taken seriously by most political experts.

Chance the Rapper responded to the backlash from his initial comments, writing, "Ok this is me slowly trying to get down from this hill without falling and dying: Whoever you vote for I hope they abolish the prison system as we know it, honor black reparations and all treaties with Indigenous folk and lastly end homelessness."

Chance used his moment as a trending topic to promote reparations for Black Americans, prison abolition, universal basic income and housing and education reform.

Ok sprinting down the hill now:
I understand the improbability of Ye winning the 46th Presidential seat and I understand that everyone voting for Biden isn’t necessarily doing so enthusiastically. I am for black liberation and do not accept my recent endorsement from Terry Crews

Good luck to Kanye on winning the election on a platform of "abolishing the prison system as we know it"

It's 2020. He could probably win on something like that.

I think he needs "free boob Wednesdays" and subsidised apple pies for blue-eyed disabled people to really seal the deal.

Honestly, do we care if Kanye wins, so long as Trump loses? Would be more humiliating for the Orange One, and Kanye could sing at his own inauguration.  ;D

Hope he just goes away, he'll be trying to run interference for Trump and eat into the Democratic vote.

A reminder of when Black Messiah Kanye West implied that slavery was a choice.

Can you imagine if any white politician, Democrat or Republican, said the below?

Quote
Kanye West suggests African-American slavery was 'a choice'
2 May 2018

US rapper Kanye West has said the enslavement of African Americans over centuries may have been a "choice".

"When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... for 400 years? That sounds like a choice," he said during an appearance on entertainment site TMZ.

Something something Joe Biden said "you aint black" something something he doesn't want to abolish the police or the prisons *cough neither did Obama cough* so he's as bad as Donald Trump

You can tell when the world has reached apex madness when Kanye West appears a more balanced president than the current POTUS

He's obviously not going to win the presidency but I do have some fear he could fuck over Biden in terms of the electoral college, particularly if people like the idiot rapper continue using their platform to encourage "hur dur, they're both as bad as each other" types to vote for/write in Kanye, or not vote at all out of apathy.

More generally, there's nothing to gain from supposedly anti-Trump people publicly shitting on Biden. There's nothing wrong with preferring another Democratic primary candidate and/or not adoring Biden generally but I will question how genuine your desire is to get rid of Trump if you're out there fuelling the "both sides" bullshit. Cool points among fellow internet lefties clearly matter to you more than electing a left-of-centre candidate ahead of a far right one.
