What strikes me is the reporting of this

The sheer drooling over bad news people almost guessing that the thing was going to collapse any minute. They had one guy on going on and on about how it was sure to collapse and whats more being egged on to say it

Parts of Windsor Castle are a thousand years old and the main fire was in St Georges Hall, built in the 14th Century. If most of the stone structure survives it can be re-built. It will take a long time and cost a lot but it could be done.

Whatever happens, it won't be preserved as a ruin.

York Minster was rebuilt after a fire before Notre Damne was even an idea. Surely they can salvage this

I really think there’s a bit of doom mongering going on as I mentioned earlier

Yeah, I forgot, sorry.  When you hear "Windsor Castle fire" I think of the whole thing going up when it was just one part.

As to preservation and restoration, well I hope you're right, but it doesn't look good right now.  Probably too dangerous for firefighters to enter the building so all they can do is control it and try to stop it spreading.  And all that water will be causing damage too.  Fingers crossed it is salvageable.

They're claiming that the fire was set and it was no accident.

The restoration workers undoubtedly found irreparable damage that would lead to the cathedral's collapse, so it's been brought down in a massive insurance scam. ::)

I can’t leave the house without rattling the front door

Imagine being a restoration worker on this driving home thinking did I turn that soldering iron off?

It’s very sad, an iconic building. I was too young when I went so that’s something I’ll never see now. Really does give you a shove to go do stuff whilst you can etc

I've been avoiding the Brit and American news services; have been watching French sources. Thankfully little drooling over bad news there (though some of the female presenters may cause drooling)

An aunt of a friend of mine was apparently in there when part of the ceiling collapsed, but I'm not sure anybody realised exactly what was going on when they were escorted out.

Makes me reflect on what it must have been like during WW2 seeing all of Europe at risk of destruction

Even Syria and Iraq in recent years have had losses like these.

The reason for the repair works.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-europe-43258266/notre-dame-cracks-in-the-cathedral

It annoys me that the Catholic Church begged for donations, they pay no tax and are one of the biggest land owners on the planet.Same thing with that college in Scotland, they let it fall into disrepair and then expected the Scottish gov to stump up to save it.

Never looks good when the Vatican asks for money.  That said, if the restoration is $6bn then even The Vatican won't be able to foot that bill on its own.  Wonder how they stand on insurance?

It's common practice to ask for public subscription, especially if people are affluent and living in a wealthy nation.

It's a relief this morning that things didn't go as badly as it looked at one point last night.

An amazing effort by the firefighters to deal with it.

It will require a huge effort to rebuild, but hopefully one that will involve worldwide support in funding and expertise.

Wonder how long the restoration will take now. Parts of the structure were cracked and crumbling before this. Between fire and water damage and a now fragile structure I'd sayv10 years minimum.

I doubt it. Almost certainly a failure in hot works procedures. Either that or an electrical fault. I don't know how French health and Safety is set up but on most UK construction sites there are strict procedures to be followed for anything that could be a fire risk.

A good illustration of what was burned and what remained.

The roof is a timber structure that is above the stone vaults. The vaults are largely intact and the roof timbers would have collapsed on top.

The spire is also a timber structure, covered in lead. When it collapsed it might have fallen through the transept vault (see above).

There are strict hot works procedures in the UK but unfortunately it doesn't always stop people being careless. We had one of the most iconic listed buildings in the centre of Belfast burn to the ground last summer while renovation works were going on. I know one of the firefighters called to it and they suspect it was caused by the guys laying the bitumen roof. The investigation into that is still ongoing.

I wouldn't fancy being in the shoes of the Directors and Health & Safety Manager of the contractor responsible for the restoration work at Notre Dame.
