Second match day of the season and we’re having to start Nat after drawing Fulham. Not ideal. Just win.

Alisson, Trent Phillips Virgil Robertson, Elliott Fabinho Henderson, Salah Darwin Diaz

Apparently it’s actually Milner over Henderson

2nd game of the season and down to our 5th choice CB is astonishing even by our injury standards then there's the midfield injuries too

Bad luck, but our 5th choice is still miles better than Maguire.

It's not bad luck if its a common theme.
We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

Gomez on bench

Maybe it’s aerial ability of Nat then.

Midfield looks interesting.

Gomez on the bench and Matip just barely missed the game - it's hardly a CB crisis!

Good go see Tsimikas back on bench and Nunez starting.

If Gomez is on bench then shouldn’t be anything too serious.

Not ideal like but still strong enough to win tonight easily.

He wouldn't be on the bench if he'd pulled a hamstring. I suspect they are going to ease him back in.

Joe on the bench
Don’t get that, they’ve got pace on the break.  Phillips is a good lad, but he gets sucked in and is slow….

Gomez doesn’t get sucked in and is quick…

He's in the squad.
So I see, not good for him unless there’s some issue if he’s fallen behind Phillips

Perhaps Joe was ill or something, there's no world where Nat is better and we don't need the extra aerial power there when Virgil plays.

A quite farcical level of injuries two weeks into the season

Hendrson and Keita must not be fully fit because that team is going to struggle on the counter against a team that likes to counter  - if he’s picked that midfield over those 2 with Phillips at the back then it’s incredibly ambitious … Lot of firepower obviously … maybe 3-3

Hopefully that front three can do the job because not great attacking options on the bench - Carvalho plus Bobby Clark!

Feel like starting Elliott, Nunez, Milner and Diaz means we could probably do with Robertson not playing as high and wide as he has done usually.

If Gomez is fit, starting Phillips ahead of him seems a bit of a strange decision.

Need a win, happy that Elliott is starting. Hope Nunez carries on where he left off last week.

Joe Gomez had been carrying a knock so only deemed fit enough for bench duty tonight so Nat Phillips makes his first PL start since May 2021 in absence of the injured Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.
Keita and Tsimikas return to the squad. Firmino absent as a precaution.
