"So whenever you were fortunate to become a Liverpool supporter. I would ask that today for a brief moment you say a small thank you to the man who gave you everything you hold dear about the greatest Football Club on Earth".

I have taken this quote from the original post by Shanklyboy, shame that only 47 people could be bothered.
"Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and making yourself available to receive a pass, it is really that simple"

"Friend, mourn not, though he premature departs, his wisdom marches on within our hearts"

it's right Vic...

we live in a world of the Big Mac, KFC, Drive -in, quick-pace, Sony PlayStation, X-Box 7, Football manager, Skytv schedules, Bebo, MIcro, Jumbo, facebook, my space, your space, where the likes of Drogba, Abrihimovic and Ronaldo just take the piss out of us, the supporter, the person who works all week and looks forward to that short moment of time on a Saturday afternoon when we can let our hair down and shout our beer bellies out as we huff and puff and cuss the ref for his lack of vision as we recommend the cheapest Opticians, slagging off the opposition then have a beer with the fans at the end of the game....

That's all gone now vic, just the cyber world of the likes of Tom & Jerry, our Disneyesque owners, who think they are at the Blackpool amusements...

oh well, there are 75 peoplel out there who know the meaning of the word that Shanks taught his players... loyalty...

Those of a certain age all have great memories of Shankly.
Probably none more-so than Vic.

I have many a memory that I could share...... could talk all day about him.

However I'll just put this as an indicator to some of our younger fans as to what Shankly was all about.

Midweek game in the 70s.
A group of rag arsed Liverpool fans hitch down to London for a game against Spurs.
No tickets....no money.

Liverpool put in a poor display and lose the game.

The same group of lads are waiting to see the team outside the players entrance after the match.
They file past onto the team coach.
After a while Shanks comes out...sees the lads and stops for a chat.

He soon realises they don't have a carat and are going to hitch it back to Liverpool.
He tells them to follow him and leads them onto the team coach.

He stands at the front and rips the players apart......informing them that these lads are why they play for Liverpool.
That while they are in a warm comfy coach, then in their warm comfy beds.... these boys will be on a motorway somewhere.

He tells them to put their hands in their pockets so the lads can have something to eat and get home properly.
The players duly oblige, Shanks thanks them for their support and hands them enough cash to get to New York and back.

He tells the players that if they had shown as much passion and commitment tonight against Spurs as these lads had in getting there to support them, they wouldn't have had a problem.

Different time, different world.....same philosophy demanded today.
The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

There are so many stories like this one, of him helping fans and of them knocking on his door, being invited in the house for a cup of tea and a chat, playing football with the lads on a Sunday.
Like you mate I could talk about him all the time but we seem to be running out of people who want to listen.
I would really like to have a drink with you one day if you don't mind

As someone who wasn't even born when he died I can't imagine what he means to most people. The guy is something, I dunno, mythical. Seems like he was larger than life. The fact that people still talk of him in such glowing terms years on is testament to that. Infact, you rarely here people speak about Liverpool before Shankly. There's a very clear line in the sand; pre-shankly and post-shankly. I don't think many other men - in any field - can claim to have changed the fortunes of something to that extent.

YNWA Bill Shankly. Was born several years after his death, but the day I started supporting Liverpool, his name was the first name associated with them. He IS Liverpool.
It wouldn't be Liverpool if we didn't do it the hard way... ask Gareth Southgate.

This one Maggie?  :wave
23 years ago today.  And I remember it as clearly as if it was yesterday.  We were on holiday in Scotland in a caravan.  I know some older fans say they can remember where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy died - I can't - but all these years later I could point to the exact spot where we were when we heard the news that Bill had died.

Sure, he'd been ill all week, but he'd get over it wouldn't he?

Heart trouble? Shanks? No way. Superfit (even for his age), doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, led a clean life. Unthinkable.

You sometimes read about "a hammer blow", well that's what is was like, just as if you'd been struck.  Stunned.  Sick.

No way to continue the holiday. We had to get home. Damn all we could do of course, but there was only one place to be. We just wanted to be there, to be close.

St Mary's Church, West Derby. John Toshack, Ron Yeats, Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence carried him. Kevin Keegan, Ian Callaghan and Ian St John escorted the coffin.  The quiet dignity of Nessie and her daughters and grandchildren. Hundreds of people and a river of tears.

Shanks was finally laid to rest when his ashes were scattered in the Kop end goal.

RIP Shanks. YNWA.

Vic, I think that the reason that there are so few posts in this thread is that the majority of us on here are from a different era and find it hard to contribute anything close to what people like you, Terry, Shanklyboy and others have done.

I really enjoy reading all of the posts on Shankly, especially those small antecdotes that characterize the great man. Your story of him putting dinner on hold to go play footie with some local lads put a big smile on my face.

I understand what you say, I just wish that the younger supporters would take some time out and read up on the history of our great club.
Torres said that when he signed for Liverpool he was given books and videos of the club's history to study.
There are plenty of videos and books about LFC knocking about.

Anyway thank you for posting that

Vic's story about being picked up from a football match, and Shankly musing on Vic's wasted talent, should be posted in the dressing room. It's not very mythic, and it's painful to read about, but it says so much about the need for the individual footballers to try their hardest, if only for themselves.

I'm too young to have witnessed Shankly first hand but I certainly appreciate everything that he did for the club and have always acknowledged him as the most important and in my opinion the best manager in our history.

His record at Liverpool says it all and the quotes and anecdotes all show what a great person he was, in addition to being a great manager.

I first attended a match on boxing day 1963, I was 8 and we thumped Stoke 6 -1. I spent every spare minute either playing footie or at Melwood sitting on top of the wall, or even meeting Shanks, Reuben Bennett and the team arrive on the bus from Anfield and getting as many autographs as I could into me little multi coloured paged book. Watched the reds all over the world and have just this year gone back to the games for the first time since Heysel. Much has changed at Anfield and at the club. Fans of my generation will have had many ups and downs in their lives, and theres not much that can make one choke up and bring tears to a mans eyes. But every time I realise that Shanks has gone I choke and have to fight back the tears.None of us who hold Liverpool Football Club so close to our hearts would have experienced any of what we have if it had not been for Bill Shankly. I am living in London now and have only missed the Villa game so far this year. But I really hope that someone up in Liverpool  pops down to the ground and places a small token of gratitude at the feet of Shanks. Thanks Shanks, Y.N.W.A.  :scarf

Good stuff mate.
That's what it's all about.

As one of the young fan's I have read up about shankly and that. just when you see him out side st georges hall is it. it me makes think how lucky you ald fellas are to remember him and even be at moments like that. me mum doesnt know much about footy but she always says that shanks was the best he cared more than anyone else. duno if the video has been posted but love it on youtube when he says that players who dont try when there in the public eye and geting paid loads should be thrown in jail.

Maybe some of the players of today should look at things like that and quotes from some real top managers lik shankly and just think about the success these managers had and what was it all based on trying not giving up.

Today marks the birth of one of the greatest managers in history, our very own Bill Shankly. He would have been 97 today so let's remember him....

He made the people happy.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- the LFC I support is the one Bill Shankly invented.

A great, great man.

Reclaim LFC: First oust G&T and Purslow, sack Hodgson, shoe the anti-Rafa teds out of L4.
