Happy Birthday Bill Shankly
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:13:53 am »

Today marks the 28th Anniversary of the death of Bill Shankly.
Shanks was undoubtedly the single most influential manager in the history of football.
Many could argue that there have been other men who’s contribution was as great if not greater to their clubs. I wouldn’t argue with the facts that there were other great managers who’s name is indelibly woven into the history of many clubs.
Great managers like Stein, Busby, Chapman, Nicholson and our own Bob Paisley , all deserve their place amongst the games elite.

However I say without fear of contradiction that none of these great managers ever had anything like the same effect.
None had and more importantly, still have an influence on a club and it’s supporters.
None are woven into the psyche and the fabric of a club and it’s supporters like Bill Shankly.

Shankly was the man who brought together so many elements that I doubt we will ever witness the likes of his achievements again.
The belief he gave his players and the Liverpool  supporters is woven into our psyche with good reason.
It is a benchmark that even now 35 years after he retired from Liverpool Football Club we still judge our team, our players and ourselves against.

Bill Shankly was more than a man who could be relied on for a witty quote or two. He was more than a man who had some success in his chosen field. There have been many men like that.

Shankly was an alchemist. A man who came to a place where he finally found a place where his  formulae could work.
I use the term Alchemist simply because by definition it means ‘the art of transformation‘.
As anyone who was a Liverpool supporter when Shankly walked into Anfield for the first time as manager would testify. We were certainly in need of ‘transformation’. In fact even a mild improvement would have been more than expected.
What Shankly ultimately achieved was simply beyond the dreams of even the most expectant, most demanding and most hopeful of supporters.
Not only did this Scottish alchemist turn the common metal that was Liverpool Football Club into a glittering golden icon, but he garnished it with the jewels of pride, passion, humility, honesty and an ethos that would stand the test of time.

Whatever has been achieved by the club owes itself in some part to the efforts and influence of Bill Shankly.

Our most recent taste of that was Istanbul. Without the feeling and passion of the players and supporters who were immersed in the culture of our club; a culture that was begun over 50 years ago. I doubt if we would have overcome not only the immense obstacles that not only faced us on the way to that glorious night, but that were placed in front of us, seemingly every step of the way.

So whenever you were fortunate to become a Liverpool supporter. I would ask that today for a brief moment you say a small thank you to the man who gave you everything you hold dear about the greatest Football Club on Earth.

It is said that alchemy is both a philosophy and a practice with the aim of  achieving ultimate wisdom as well as immortality, involving the improvement of the alchemist as well as the making of several substances described as possessing unusual properties.

I think it’s fair to say that Bill Shankly achieved all of that and more.

Thanks Boss.

Nice one Shanklyboy, wonderful words.

He made us the greatest and he lives on in our collective soul. He is Liverpool FC.

And this season is the 50th anniversary of him signing for us.

Always alive in our dreams and achievements.

Nice post sb.

His achievements will never be forgotten.

Up there smiling down with Sir Bob.

RIP Bill.

But...but...I just read that Bill Shankly is officially one of the 50 people who fouled up football. Now you're telling me otherwise?

Seriously though, as Phil M said, his achievements will never be forgotten.

Brilliant post Shanklyboy.

Here's a post I did a while ago about my personal experience of the great man.
I had the pleasure of seeing him coming up to the Kop with many a trophy, and I'll never forget the joy and total pride that he always had on his face.

I remember in 73 when Northern Ireland's home internationals had to be played in England because of the troubles. My mate and I went to watch them against England at Goodison.  After the game we stood behind the main stand hoping to get a glimpse of some the players etc..
After about half an hour this little smart fella comes out of one of the doors and there's a mad commotion with fans and photographers all pushing up to greet him. That smart little fella was the great man himself..

I'll never forget the look on everybody's face as he walked up towards us.  Even the photographers who were taking pictures were pausing and looking at him as if he was God..

Fucking great memories of a great, great man....

Without a doubt in mind Bill Shankly is the greatest ever manager in English football. some have achieved more than him in the game but people forget that he took Liverpool from the 2ND DIVISION ! and turned us into the empire we are today. His fingerprints are all over the success of Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish, Houllier and even Benitez !

What a great man. Shankly will forever be in our hearts.

Great post!!!! While I barely remember the great man, most of my first memories involved many of the players he brought here and those fond memories of the late 70s onwards are down to the foundation that a true legend laid here 50 years ago.

Without a doubt, this great man invented the fan>manager bond.  No other man has had the same affinity with his supporters as Bill Shankly had with us.  That bond is the very reason Liverpool FC is and always will be a special club and is something that is still unique about us even now.

Not only did this Scottish alchemist turn the common metal that was Liverpool Football Club into a glittering golden icon, but he garnished it with the jewels of pride, passion, humility, honesty and an ethos that would stand the test of time.

I can't begin to say that I've been a Liverpool fan since birth-- I wasn't born anywhere near a place where I might have acquired even so much as a familiarity with LFC until I sought out a football club to support.  However, once I grew into my interest in the game I'd always loved, Liverpool FC became my team.  Gerrard was the player who served as a missionary to convert me before I knew anything about the history of the club, but Shankly is the reason that what would have been a passing interest became an obsession.  I always thought sports could be about no more than ego-maniacal, overpaid athletes.  Then I began to understand the principles behind Liverpool's otherwise-inexplicable ability to come back or to succeed as under-dogs... And suddenly, my favorite soccer team became the only club whose status-- as a success or failure, as the ward of a bullshit commercial investment partnership or a part of a community of which I was not (am not) a part but value anyway-- mattered to me.  I don't think it's a coincidence that LFC hasn't been home to a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque player.  How would someone like that conform to the system of values that drives the club?  Either LFC would have saved him as a human being or he would have been shipped out in a January transfer window.  Shankly's socialism is the reason Liverpool means more to me than even local sports teams, teams I grew up supporting.  I cheer for my Kansas City Chiefs NFL football team because I grew up in the city and have watched them my whole life, but I watch every Liverpool game I can (which is, thanks to this website's forum, just about every game played) because I genuinely believe in the principles on which the modern form of the club is founded.

Great post Shankly boy. Shanks was a normal person like everyone else on here but that is was one the many reasons that made him so special. Changing our white shorts to red, giving us an all red kit made us look awesome on the pitch. The little things mattered to shanks but we the fans were the most important to Bill.

Well today is of course the day 28 years ago that we lost one of our greatest friends, Bill Shankly, our mentor, our fearless leader who became Mr Liverpool Fc and gave us all the qualities that many of us hold dear today.

He gave us 'bottle', he gave us the belief that not only could we be the best but he convinced us all that we were the best and then he went on to prove that we were the best, and he left us such a powerful legacy that there will never be another one like him. Sir Bob took over and did a fantastic job, even admitting to failure one year..."when we only came second...!!!"

But Shanks was the man, and here is my tribute to him, written a few years back, but every word still valid...

to Karen & Vic Gill...

Shankly’s Ark… A Tribute…

September 29th 1981

Was a very sad day on Merseyside

When one of it’s finest sporting servants

Left us quite suddenly, he left us and he died…

The disbelieving public

Could not believe this sudden loss

If you didn’t know Bill Shankly

I couldn’t give a toss…

But dear old Shanks he did not die in vain

Despite this empty great hole he left behind

He was one of life’s true gentlemen

He always spoke his mind…

That cold & brae December day in 1959,

When we were wallowing in Division 2

“Cowboy Shanks” had ridden into town

He had a simple message for me & for you…

As Chairman TV Williams went out on a limb

To change our sagging fortunes round

He saw something special in this Scottish man

What he’d found was sound as a pound…

Our Shanks he had his Nessie

His football was his life

His passion has never been doubted

Football was his mistress, Nessie was his wife…

He started at the bottom

A pretty good place to start

He brought in Saint & Rowdy Yeats

He pulled sad old Melwood apart…

He introduced the 5 a sides in training

A brand new concept type of thing

He brought in short sharp ‘pass & move’

A simple bell he did ring…

With Bob & Joe & Rueben,

His Boot-room culture began

It formed the nucleus of his team

His magical new focus of a plan

The Anfield faithful sensed a change

As crowds again topped forty thou…

We climbed of the top of Division 2

No one could stop us now…

He built up the momentum

His goal was clear to see

His passion was to take us to the top

Cos we were Liverpool FC…

And so Shankly’s Ark was born & open

As the chosen ones flocked in

You had to be quite special

For Shanks to let you in…

There was Tommy & Gerry & Chris Lawler

Willie Stevenson tight at the back

With Smithy & Rowdy & Crazy Horse Emlyn

They were a hard nut sure to crack…

They built up a tough reputation

That was true and then the kop it would sing

There was Cally & Saint and Sir Roger

Willie Stevo & Peter Thompson on the wing…

These worthy and true adversaries

Are forever inside Bill Shankly’s Ark

As they walk up that creaky old plank

To the light and not into the dark…

In there are all our childhood hero’s

Whom we met every Saturday afternoon at three

They gave us what we needed

They re-wrote our football history…

So as years passed by there have been many

Who aspire to be hero’s each day

So they can join the ranks of the immortals

In Shankly’s Ark, in November, March or May…

There was Clemmo & Larry & Alec,

Shanks was not scared to flush the boys out

He brought in some famous old sayings

When the Beatles were singing Twist & Shout…

“This is Anfield” sign was just a reminder

For his players to keep their feet on the ground

And he told them to remember who they were playing for

The many fans who had paid their two pound…

His aim was to make his team famous

He did this no shadow of a doubt

By playing good attractive and hard football

Week in & week out…

Shankly’s Ark is full of great players

Far too many to mention right now you’ll see

There was young Kevin & big Tosh & Phil Boersma

Stevie Heighway left them for dead (he he he)…

So we celebrate the great mans passing

28 years ago to this very day

I’ll bet he was looking down laughing

With Emlyn on the 25th of May… (2005)

He was looking for more hero entrants

To his Ark that we can all surely agree

That to enter you need to be a hero

And to play for the great LFC..

So for those that do dare to be courageous

To go that extra mile for the thousands of fans

There’s still some places up for grabs

In Shankly’s Ark…try to get in if you can…

We miss you so much William Shankly

From Glenbuck, your star surely did shine

You laid the solid foundations

Of what’s yours and what’s certainly now mine…

You brought us back our pride and our passion

Hailed the Kop as they sang a song of our own

The door is still open to Shankly’s Ark now

May you never ,ever walk alone…

Below from the official site:-

Liverpool bade an emotional farewell to arguably the greatest manager in the club's history on this day in 1981.
The legendary Bill Shankly passed away at the age of 68 and on the anniversary of his death Liverpoolfc.tv is paying its respects to the great man with a compilation of some of his classic quotes.

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

*****

'If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing.'

*****

'Liverpool was made for me and I was made for Liverpool.'

*****

'The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game.'

*****

'Son, you'll do well here as long as you remember two things. Don't over-eat and don't lose your accent.' - to Ian St John when he signed for Liverpool.

*****

To a journalist who suggested Liverpool were struggling – 'Ay, here we are with problems at the top of the league.'

*****

Talking to a reporter about Roger Hunt – 'Yes Roger Hunt misses a few, but he gets in the right place to miss them.'

*****

Explaining to Kevin Keegan what's expected of him at Anfield - 'Just go out and drop a few hand grenades all over the place son!'

*****

'I know this is a sad occasion, but I think that Dixie would be amazed to know that even in death he could draw a bigger crowd to Goodison than Everton on a Saturday afternoon.' – speaking at the funeral of Everton legend Dixie Dean

*****

'If Everton were playing at the bottom of the garden, I'd pull the curtains.'

*****

'Sickness would not have kept me away from this one. If I'd been dead, I would have had them bring the casket to the ground, prop it up in the stands, and cut a hole in the lid.' - after beating Everton in the 1971 FA Cup semi-final.

*****

Addressing the Liverpool fans who turned up in their thousands to welcome the team home despite losing to Arsenal in the 1971 FA Cup final - 'Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength.'

*****

After signing Ron Yeats - 'With him in defence, we could play Arthur Askey in goal.'

*****

To Alan Ball after he'd signed for Everton - 'Never mind Alan, at least you'll be able to play next to a great team.'

*****

To Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee - 'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee!'

*****

To the players after failing to sign Lou Macari - 'I only wanted him for the reserves anyway.'

*****

To Ian St John - 'If you're not sure what to do with the ball, just pop it in the net and we'll discuss your options afterwards.'

*****

'In my time at Anfield we always said we had the best two teams on Merseyside - Liverpool and Liverpool reserves.'

*****

About the 'This is Anfield' plaque - 'This is to remind our lads who they're playing for, and to remind the opposition who they're playing against.'

*****

'Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present. It was her birthday amd would I have got married during the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves.'

*****

Shankly to the Brussels hotel clerk who queried his signing 'Anfield' as his address on the hotel register - 'But that's where I live.'

*****

Shankly explaining rotation to a reporter - 'Laddie, I never drop players, I only make changes.'

*****

Comparing the Anfield pitch to other grounds - 'It's great grass at Anfield, professional grass!'

*****

'The difference between Everton and the Queen Mary is that Everton carry more passengers!'

*****

To a local barber, who in 1968 had asked 'Anything off the top? Shanks retorted - 'Aye, Everton!'

*****

On awaiting Everton's arrival for a derby game at Anfield, Shankly gave a box of toilet rolls to the doorman and said - 'Give them these when they arrive – they'll need them!'

*****

'I always look in the Sunday paper to see where Everton are in the league – starting, of course, from the bottom up.'

*****

To Chris Lawler during a training session at Melwood - 'Was it a goal? Was I offside?' Lawler replied - 'You were boss.' Shanks then quipped - 'Christ, son, you've been here four years, hardly said a word and, when you do, it's a bloody lie!'

*****

To Tommy Smith during training - 'You son, could start a riot in a graveyard.'

*****

'There's Man. Utd and Man. City at the bottom of Division 1, and by God they'll take some shifting.'

*****

'It's a 90 minute game for sure. In fact I used to train for a 190 minute game so that when the whistle blew at the end of the match I could have played another 90 minutes.'

*****

On a wartime Scotland v England match - 'We absolutely annihilated England. It was a massacre. We beat them 5-4.'

*****

After losing to Ajax in the 1967 European Cup - 'We cannae play these defensive continental sides!'

Shanks and Tommy Docherty were at a game. There was a player every other club coveted on view. Docherty said to Shanks - '100,000 wouldn't buy him.' Shanks retorted - 'Yeah, and I'm one of the 100,000!'

*****

What Shanks disliked about football - 'The end of the season.'

*****

Radio Merseyside reporter to Shankly - 'Mr Shankly, why is it that your teams' unbeaten run has suddenly ended?' Shanks replied: 'Why don't you go and jump in the lake?'

*****

On hearing a rival manager was unwell - 'I know what's wrong - he's got a bad side!'

*****

To reporters after a 3-0 defeat - 'They're nothing but rubbish. Three breakaways, that's all they got.'

*****

Talking about Tommy Smith - 'If he isn't named Footballer of the Year, football should be stopped and the men who picked any other player should be sent to the Kremlin.'

After winning the FA Cup in 1974 Shankly goes into a fish and chip shop and orders a fish supper. The woman at the counter asks - 'Mr Shankly, shouldn't they be having steak suppers?' Shanks replied - 'No lass, they'll get steak suppers when they win the double!'

*****

To the Anfield PA during a match - 'Jesus Christ, son, can ye no' talk into that microphone when the players are in the penalty box. You're putting them off, you're doing more damage than the opposition.'

*****

Shankly on boardroom meetings - 'At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques.'

*****

Talking about the Liverpool fans - 'I'm just one of the people who stands on the kop. They think the same as I do, and I think the same as they do. It's a kind of marriage of people who like each other.'

*****

Waxing lyrical about Ian Callaghan - 'He typifies everything that is good in football, and he has never changed. You could stake your life on Ian.'

*****

'Fire in your belly comes from pride and passion in wearing the red shirt. We don't need to motivate players because each of them is responsible for the performance of the team as a whole. The status of Liverpool's players keeps them motivated.'

*****

'Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.'

*****

On the leaving of Liverpool – 'It was the most difficult thing in the world, when I went to tell the chairman. It was like walking to the electric chair. That's the way it felt.'

RIP Bill Shankly - The greatest of them all.

Without doubt the reason we are the Club we are today.

I certainly second that opinion.  A fantastic man who this club will never forget.

He's a manipulative bastard. Another deliberate attempt to put pressure on people in the game, which he thinks he'll get away with because of his "standing" in the game and his fucking knighthood.
