Time for a resounding chorus of "I let the ball fall into careless hands" from the Kop.

Didn't know this:

O'Connor was married four times, and has described the end of his first three relationships as casualties of his obsession with work.

In 2007, he married long-term girlfriend Jodie Brooke Wilson, who was 37 years his junior and gave birth to their son Adam when O'Connor was 72.

He was much respected, his Wednesday night shows were always packed with stars. A good entertainer.

Sad news, RIP.

When I heard this, I thought immediately of Eric Morecombe and his Des O'Connor quips he had.

RIP Des.

Yep Eric Morecambe especially ripped him to bits on Morecambe & Wise shows, mostly was a piss take rather than anything nasty, but they were good friends

Des was brilliant. Groundbreaking in introducing American comics to a wider audience ( first time I ever heard of Jerry Seinfeld, for instance, was when he appeared as a guest on one of his shows). His shows were also great outlets for homegrown stand ups to get their face on tv. My own favourite was Stan Boardman telling the yarn about Charlie Polanski and Fokkers. I'm sure it wouldn't be seen as politically correct now but it was of its time ( 30 years odd after the war) and very very funny.

Ah, that's sad news.

One day I was in town, near what is now the Shankly Hotel. A car pulls up beside me and the passenger window goes down. Inside is Des O'Connor and his daughter Karen. They ask directions for the Mersey tunnel. I said, "straight down, then turn left" they say thanks and drive off.

I think to myself, bloody hell, that was Des O'Connor.

RIP Des.

Being the butt of Morecambe & Wise's  (good natured) ribbing and put-downs did no harm to Des's career. Another star of variety and a familiar face of Saturday night TV, especially in the 60's & 70's, gone. I'm getting old.

RIP Des.
