Yes...

I’m not sure why I picked Roger Black as a comparison though... :lmao

Had me stumped 🤷‍♀️
Anyways, he will be so important in the final. Ronaldo will try and target our right side so he needs to keep those guys on their toes.

He played a pass against Brighton the other day for Trent to run on to, about 70 yards, cross field daisy cutter, quite frankly it was utterly filthy, superb footballer.

It's the way he's just so casual about it.

I seem to remember him playing a pretty cheeky ball down the left flank at one point to.
Never seen him playing I think. But looks like a good player.

I know it doesn't make much tactical sense but i'd really like to see VVD punch Ronaldo right in the face. Maybe a late dive/whingefest with Liverpool up 4-0 or something?

Hey.

Actually I’d rather that we were winning by one and with 2 minutes to go that he dived to win a penalty and the ref caught him out and he got a second yellow card and was sent off and in the way off Klopp laughed at his tears!!!! Would be far more satisfying

The kind of player title-winning teams are built on. Him, Firmino, Mane, Salah are in their prime in the next 2-3 years. Need to make sure we take advantage of that.
It wouldn't be Liverpool if we didn't do it the hard way... ask Gareth Southgate.

I've not checked to see what any of them have wrote on social media last night, not out of malice, I just want to distance myself from it (good start opening rawk then  ::)) - but that feels like a commanding statement from Virgil, what a ride it's been for him. He could have been fighting relegation if he'd stayed at Southampton and now he's playing in the european cup final. I pray it's not his last and I don't think it will be.

Lovren was brilliant too I thought. These could be the men.

he is one of the players you know is also a fan... he means it... you can see how he talks about the club...

i wonder why nobody took him from Groningen earlier...

nothing better than if a player also loves the club he playes for...

very strong candidate for the armband in near future imo.. together with Ox - my favourite to take it.

He’s a brilliant addition to the team and money well spent.

However he was disappointingly tentative on the ball on Saturday. I know it’s not easy for the centre backs when you have a midfielder in front of you who doesn’t want the ball, but Virgil simply refused to move with the ball throughout the game. It was all a little Carragher-esque. By contrast Lovren was excellent. He tried to take up the burden and was much braver than his partner. Very odd.

I think he stopped passing into midfield because 9 times out of 10 it was given straight back.

Think Saturday really highlighted the need for us to have a 6 who can play on the half turn, who scans for the full picture prior to receiving the ball, who can pass with either foot, and is comfortable under pressure.

Not an easy player to find, or sign.

Plus, for me, he's up there with the best centre halves in the game. The best I've seen play for Liverpool.

That’s fair to a point. It is surely obvious to the world that Hendo is ill-equipped to play such an important role. Like you say he kept sending problems back to the centre back and Trent. However I was still surprised that Virgil wasn’t more proactive. He looked a little overwhelmed by the occasion and was really tentative when he had the ball and therefore too quick to launch it long. Surprisingly, it was Lovren who was cool enough to move with the ball and who tried to provoke Madrid into a little bit of disorganisation.

I mean if not launching aimless punts ala Rooney is tentative then yes, he was tentative. He's the best long passer in the first team but there really wasn't a lot on and Virgil is too intelligent to just start painting things into vacant areas. I thought he made some really good passing options for Henderson which weren't used.

I just think if your relying on your CB to be Hyypia and Xabi Alonso all at the same time then there's something wrong with whoever the controller is at number 6.

edit: for what it's worth Henderson had a solid game defensively I just don't think he helped us move up the pitch.

I do think Virgil didn't have his greatest game but part of that, particularly on the ball, was the lack of any passing options in front of him. I think with Mo in the team, we are able to push much further up the pitch and play in the opponent's half as they concede space since they're petrified of Mo's pace in behind the defence. Once he was off, Madrid forced us to play within our half and as we dropped deeper, it fell to our midfield to break the lines with their passing or making a quick run but outside of Gini on the odd occasion, this was sorely lacking in our midfield and the ball kept being returned to the centre backs, so they had no opportunity to push up and play more progressively.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

The long balls from the back four were.

Van Dijk   3
Robertson 5
Trent 6
Lovren 8

I think a major reason is that when Henderson has his back to play then the ball is either going back to the keeper, Lovren or Trent. He simply doesn't open his body up so the ball is going to be played to his left. Madrid took advantage of that all evening they left Henderson free as the outball and then pressed him and the right hand side of our defence. Henderson made the most passes for us 40 and had a 95% pass completion rate but for me that was down to Madrid actually wanting him to get on the ball.

Trent had a terrible pass completion rate of 46.9% but for me that was down to how predictable we were in possession as soon as the ball went into Henderson Madrid were looking to close Trent down. Van Dijk looks far better in possession when Gini plays as the 6 for me because we are far more unpredictable.
