As always hoping for an upwards curve.

Not given my annual thanks to Prof and everyone who makes this such an interesting (meta) thread.

Who was it (sms?jcb?) who used to do the weekend APLT preview? I liked those.

Nessy used to do them. Hopefully, he'll be back with them soonish.

For reference, after 7 games last season we were on +3 in the APLT.

Cheers Prof,

Not as nice as this time last year but we can still turn this around. Our form isn't too dissimilar to Chelsea and Spurs by the looks of that graph alone (ie fluctuates quite a bit)

What the APLT is great for is to normalise the difficulty of games in a very simple way.
On an extreme level, say Liverpool have to play the top 10 teams in the first 10 games and Man U play the bottom 10 teams during the same period. If they both end up with the same number of points after the 10 games who is doing better?

The APLT helps answer that. It smooths out the point system based on the difficulty of the games

In answer to your question, neither team is doing better than the other as they'd both have the same points. Unless it's a trick question?!

Yeah, they're both on the same points but Liverpool have played all their hard fixtures whereas Man U haven't. One would argue that it's not a fair comparison until both teams have played the same corresponding fixtures. It's a current problem with the standard table that the APLT tries to remedy.

Look at Man U at the moment, they are doing really well but they haven't played any big teams yet. Some pundits have picked up on this and because of that fact state that Man City are in a better position.

Top 4 will be a big ask this season. We finished above Utd last season! And all they did this summer was to swap in Lukaku for Zlatan.

And buy arguably one of the best holding midfielders in the league. Stick Matic in our midfield and we'd probably be where they are now.
We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

I understand now what the APLT is trying to do, but as we know the 'easier' games are sometimes the hardest! Also it doesn't factor in form, injuries, suspensions, time of the season, cups etc

Does the real table factor in form, injuries, suspensions, time of the season, cups etc when calculating the points? Can't see the relevance.

It's just another way to look at how teams do point wise in relation to what we should expect in our quest to challange for the title / reach top 4.

No it doesn't and neither does the APLT. The league table as it is is the best way to look at how teams are doing points wise.

Nice to know so many of you have my back  ;D

No one told him that the APLT also means we can make pretty graphs that show trends in a way the real table doesn't easily allow.  Then again, Samie gets them confused with tube maps, so maybe that's a specialist taste too  :-\

Mesaage boards are slowly but sure reducing in popularity in this new era of twitter, facebook, reddit and who knows what else. Plus RAWK in particular is heavily moderated, so idiots have lifespan of an ice-cube placed in a cup of coffee.

I still love this thread. Anybody keeping an eye on the relegation one?

Way off topic- but I also wondered about a Championship version. But i think you could only start it at the halfway point to allow the cream to rise first.

Was planning at having a look at it this international break (It was around this time last year we started it - and even then it might have been a bit too early...)
I'll consider whether it's worth posting once I've reviewed it. At least this time I won't have to worry about the paradox that was Leicester last season.

Here you go Mick, I've run the RAPLT and included the bottom 10 table as well...

For those of you who missed it, or need a reminder, the point score system for the relegation battle differs to the standard APLT. We ran a few models last year and compared the outputs to previous seasons to see which one performed the best, Prof's model came up trumps and is set up as follows:

12 easiest home matches are Par 3's
12 easiest away matches are par 1's
All other remaining games against the top of the table teams are Par 0's ( i.e. W:3, D:1, L:0  - in other words you won't drop any points if you loose these games but have the opportunity to gain some bonus points here)

Thanks JCB

It looks like 5 teams have already emerged as in the dogfight.  We will see a lot of fluctuations during the season due to the lack of predictability of results and the more variable form of weaker teams.

Considering they shipped in 9 goals in the last 2 games... I can just imagine Hodgson saying:

“From what I saw I thought we dominated the [2 games] totally. I thought the shape of the team was good; the quality of our passing and movement was good. We didn’t score goals and [they] did but I refuse to accept that we were in any way outplayed or any way inferior. I watched the performance and the [2 games were] as good as I saw a team play under my management that is for sure.”... just look at this graph.

And their next game...Chelsea

I laughed out loud at that one! But it DOES put his losses into perspective a bit.

And putting Everton in? Haha!

This feels like a season where 4th spot might go to a points total of mid-60s.
