Thought he was brilliant last night.

I cant once remember seeing Robben get the better of him when attacking down the right (without cutting inside), and his passing and delivery was excellent as usual.

If Steve Finnan was under rated, then I dont know what it makes Fabio Aurelio!

Just a huge shame he's so prone to injury, if not then our left back position would well and truly be sorted.

Really underrated.
Very, very rarely does a winger get the better of him over 90 minutes.

I hope Gerrard does the mature thing and lets Aurelio take the majority of free kicks now.  It's not going to happen Stevie, it's not your strong point so leave it to a master.
Aside from the set pieces, he's a thoroughbred player in just about every other department as well.

He was fantastic. Great to see both him and Yossi do so well. So underrated, the pair of them. You'll so often see in these forums, those two used as examples how our squad is filled with average. I'd disagree. These two are top quality players.

Don't see why we needed Barry? As a utility man, Fabio is just as good.

Another brilliant performance from him, that cross for the goal was amazing, kept it low enough, had a fair bit of power, and it was pin-point accurate.

Just a shame he can't play every game. But well done to him, covered Riera's arse by getting forward too (god knows what happened to Albert last night!) ;D
On awaiting Everton's arrival for a derby game at Anfield, Shankly gave a box of toilet rolls to the doorman and said: 'Give them these when they arrive – they'll need them!'

Very much agree with that.

Everytime i see yet another over/under hit free kick by Steve, I sigh and think only of what could have been, as Fabio is stood behind him with his head in his hands.

On the topic of setpieces, I would say Aurelio is only truly better at freekicks. Gerrard takes a pretty mean corner kick, and it's not really his fault that we don't have the players to attack them in the box. Of the first team, only Torres, Riera and Kuyt are good headers of the ball. Neither of our starting centrebacks are particularly good at aiming with their heads. Defensive headers yes, but attacking headers no. Perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me, but I think we have scored from a fair few corners this season. Torres against City for one, twice against Newcastle are the obvious ones and I am pretty sure there have been a few more.

But yes, free kicks should be left to Aurelio. Even Alonso, with his incredible range of passing and technique, often overhits his freekicks such that nobody can get on the end of them.

Always a decent player to have a cheeky bet on. I thought he done well, very well. Just goes to show what a bit of competition for positions can do for performances with Insua coming back to the fold.

I watch quite a few of Villa matches and I am really impressed with Barry. I am thankful to the god that we didn't sold Alonso but I also rate Barry highly. The villa midfield without Barry is similar to us without Gerrard and Alonso (creativity wise). I think he migh have saved us few points this season when Gerrard or Alonso or both were out of team. Also this would have given more chance to play Lucas in attacking role which most want to see, more chances to babel as Torres under study. I can see why Rafa wanted Barry instead of Keane.

AURELIO LAUDS SET-PIECES TRAINING

James Carroll 26 February 2009

Fabio Aurelio believes hard work on the training ground paid dividends for Liverpool in last night's historic victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
The Brazilian full-back provided the pinpoint cross for Yossi Benayoun's winning goal eight minutes from time and admitted he is delighted to have contributed to another memorable European night for the Reds.

"I'm very happy to have set up the goal," Aurelio told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It's always pleasing when the free-kicks and set-pieces you've been practising in training work in a match."

A solid performance from Liverpool saw Rafael Benitez's side claim a famous 1-0 victory on their first ever competitive visit to the Bernabeu.

Aurelio is pleased with the manner of the team's performance and feels the result has boosted the Reds' chances of progressing into the quarter-finals of the competition.

He added: "It's difficult to play against big teams like Madrid, especially away from home. But we fought until the end and controlled them well.

"We are delighted with the result. It's always very important to try and get an away goal.

"I think we had the chances to score more than one goal, but, we know we have an advantage now and, although it's not over yet, we have a great opportunity to progress."

What's left to be said? Nothing I've not said a hundred times already. Fabio is class, it is that simple. One of the technical elite group of our players (together with Xabi, Gerrard, Agger, and Torres) that are a joy to watch with the ball at their feet.

No surprise though, seem to recall a certain surging run and excellent pass for Torres' goal at the San Siro this time a year ago, and he's done it again. Fingers crossed as always (I'm never resurrecting my permacrock thread for fear of jinxing him) but it looks like he's recapturing his old Valencia form, solid defending whilst providing a versatile outlet in a more advanced position, and some joy at set-pieces. Regardless of Xabi's form, I think this season, we've found our real Gareth-Barry-killer.

Was fortunate enough to be at the match last night, and aside from his assist, and his calm but assured marshalling of that tricky charlie uniform etc. Robben, the thing I appreciate most seeing Aurelio live (aside from his superb technical ability) which you don't get much of on TV, is his off-the-ball movement - almost like he's seeing the game with an enhanced perspective to other players.

Too bad he's made of glass..
Again with this crap. Tell me, is it some kind of perverse RAWK self-fulfilling prophecy? Say it often enough and the gods will surely smite down our Brazilian LB just for a laugh? Personally I think they're otherwise occupied with Torres this season, he's much more glass-like of late.

Here's a novel idea.....just be bloody thankful that Aurelio a quality player and that we seem *insert appropriate lucky charm/omen* to have finally found the answer to his persistent and unlucky niggles - in that we simply don't play him again within 7 days of his previous game. Plus we have a very talented Argentinian understudy to step into the breach when required.

Hope he is dropped at the weekend. Sounds really strange saying that, saying that I hope for our best left back to be dropped, but he’s just not up to it twice in a week, is he? I would hope that Dossena can step it up against the likes of Boro and Sunderland but I am wondering what would be done about the Madrid and Manc game. Could he manage both? I really wouldn’t trust Dossena for either of these games and I don’t know if I’d trust Insua either.

My thoughts exactly... I always felt that Aurelio is our best set piece taker, followed by Alonso, then Gerrard. For some reason we go in reverse order... But one thing is clear, every great team has a set piece taker, and we don't. Even lesser teams significantly improve their performance with a free kick specialist, take a look at Lyon's Juninho.

Even if Aurelio is injured some of the time, we still have Insua and Dossena to play at LB.  I kinda like the fact that he's such a great utility player (playing midfield if needed), coupled with the fact that he's not always fit, makes for a sure thing that he'll be sticking around.

If he was healthy all the time, he probably would be sitting the bench more with the way Rafa likes to change things up according to tactics, as well as bringing Insua along, and getting the money's worth out of Doss.  In reality, it's a godsend that he's not always healthy, because a lot of bench time would probably make him a little disappointed.  We seem to be the only team of the big 4 that can't sit a quality player on the bench without them wanting to leave.

Kind of a silver lining.

His free kicks and corners are consistently well done lately. I've been so disappointed with that part of our game over the last few seasons. I couldn't help thinking "what would Fabio have done?" when Xabi knocked that free kick out of bounds and over everyone's head.

I hope that he gets to start more often and takes more and more free kicks and corners for us.

I have never seen Rafa doing such a mad walk and hitting at the chair after Alonso's free kick... ;D

But I agree with you 100% about our free kick problem in the past seasons. I've stated consistently that we don't have anyone to take them, and teams are just not frightened... They are quite happy to give a foul right at the edge of their box, knowing that the odds of us scoring are like 1 of 100... I too hope Aurelio steps up from now on AHEAD OF STEVIE, as his accuracy was something Rafa praised very highly (better than Alonso's) when we bought him, but I doubt this will happen.

On the topic at hand, another great performance from aurelio. fantastic ball in, he should take more set pieces. Always been impressed with him, just needs a run of games without you know what.
