Si Jiahui is 19 years old and wants to make a career for himself in snooker. No doubt he comes from a much less advantaged background than Murphy. How dare he be allowed to compete with the rich fat fuck and take 'food from his table'.  ???

I'm sure his Chinese sponsors will have loved that interview.....

Absolutely stupid interview that I'm sure he will just blame the emotions of losing.

That being said, he's 'only' won £36k this year... ::) Whilst the guy that beat him won £6,500 in that match alone.

I've never warmed to Spud Murphy but Robertson was interviewed on Radio 5 this morning and was supportive of the comments made by Murphy.  He was keen to make the distinction between amateur Chinese players who he said many of which were as good as top 50 professional players and aging amateur Brits that were just, in most cases, fodder.

Both players seem to have a problem with amateurs playing without pressure having an advantage.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable can explain why somebody good enough to be a top 50 professional would want be an amateur instead?

Its worth remembering that taking food off Murphys table is probably the worst thing you can do to him. No wonder he's annoyed.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

UK Championship is a joke these days. They just can't leave the big events alone; they have to be seen to be doing something. Nobodies galore in it now.

I don't think Si wants to be an amateur. He was on the pro tour but dropped off due to results. Don't see how him fighting to be on the pro tour and make a real living is no pressure to be honest.

Thanks.

It sounds like the current pros want a closed shop where pros play pros for prize money and amateurs play amateurs for ranking points.  I guess with some sort of promotion/relegation between the pro and amateur circuits on an infrequent basis.

As you say though, I'm not sure how the badge of amateur or pro alters the pressure between someone like Si and Murphy or Robertson.  If their primary income is snooker then it's a meaningless label unless by being an amateur players get some other perks (I don't know - not having to pay certain fees, for example).

Just saw that and by chance saw about what Murphy did in 2019 which I forgot about. 2019 he tried qualifying for the Open championship in Portrush. As an amateur to take the spot off a pro. He actually said:

"It is all a bit tongue in cheek and a bit of a laugh,"

"The one thing I do have going for me is that I already have a full-time job. Golf isn't my livelihood. Relative to the other players I will be playing against, it doesn't really matter to me if I win or lose."

His comments about the Amateur were almost the same. You couldn’t make it up.

Well you won't do, because so many nobodies are involved the tournament is almost as long as the World Championships these days. 128 entrants so they've been playing for about a week before the BBC pick up coverage on Saturday.

When it comes to Murphy, I have no particular love of him but just think Maguire was the bigger twat for the fat comments he made about Murphy.

I don’t think I have really supported a snooker player since Jimmy White (yes he’s English, but he’s Jimmy so he gets a pass from me).

From his Wikipedia page:

Murphy's wife filed for divorce in 2009 on the grounds of infidelity after The People newspaper published an exposé revealing he had spent the night with an escort girl he had met at a religious youth group

That old chestnut.

Suspect if we replace the word 'escort' with 'fat' and 'religious youth' with 'fat', we are probably closer to the truth. Not that there's anything wrong with a bit of 'fat'.

What a hypocrite. Hope someone brings that up when they next interview him.

Heard him on the radio earlier Hazell with his bellend mate Andy Goldstein trying to justify what he was saying. They did bring up the Golf thing, albeit a big gingerly. It was an awful interview though and just made things worse. Came across really really bad. He started off by saying he wanted to add context about the story saying how he was in pain after every shot and could barely stand up. Then made some bizarre remark that Golf is different because the clue is in the name, the Open. So they asked him about Snooker opens.........not having it. What kind of context is that ? Then went on about how there was no pressure on the ameteur.
No pressure ?  Them lads could get absolutely rinsed and are not making hundreds of thousands from the sport.  I couldn't really understand before why everyone seemed to dislike him, I do now. He's an elitist prick that fella.

Not sure what he would say, he was very complimentary about the qualifier he beat tonight but he’s also complained about the quality of some of the lower ranked players on the tour, ‘I’d have to lose an arm and a leg to fall out of the top 32’ or something like that he said not that long ago, and that wasn’t him being big headed but more how poor the tour as a whole is.

Shaun Murphy may well be an elitist prick, however he's been supported in what he's said by Neil Robertson, Mark Williams and Mark Selby. Massive hitters within snooker, so they deserve as more ire as he's getting for it. Murphy just stuck his head above the parapet before they did. He's clearly hit on something that rankles the top players.

I just heard the story his evening really mate I haven't been following too much Snooker news lately. What is it though that they have a problem with?  Is it because the Ameteurs are getting their chance to play instead of other Pro's or because they are potentially taking prize money away from them ?  Or both. And I also wonder, were any of these lads ameteurs competing in big tournaments to cut their teeth. I don't get it. Murphy says Golf Opens are different because they are Opens...but this was the UK Open.
He also said (and Im saying he but if he was speaking on behalf a load of them) that the lad had no pressures or worries. I don't agree with that, he's trying to get into the pro circuit and he's probably not earning while doing so, so he's arguably under more pressure than the likes of Murphy

UK Snooker Championship 2021: Mark Selby and Mark Williams 'agree' with Shaun Murphy

Quote
Former world champions Mark Selby and Mark Williams agree with and "stand by" Shaun Murphy's criticism of amateurs playing in professional events.

Murphy's comments came after his shock 6-5 UK Championship loss to China's Si Jiahui, who was competing as an amateur top-up in the 128-man field in York.

The Englishman was criticised on social media for his opinions.

However, four-time world champion Selby told BBC Sport: "I think a lot of players agree with him."

The world number one added: "Because he [Shaun Murphy] said it after he lost, people probably think it is sour grapes and he wouldn't have said it if he had won - but I totally stand by everything he said.

"There's a reason there is a Q School to try to get on [the professional tour], and if you don't get on, you should have to wait another year and play in the amateur events."

Selby progressed safely through the UK Championship first round with a 6-2 victory against Ross Muir that included breaks of 67, 93 and 95.

Williams, 46, who has won three world titles in a glittering career since turning professional in 1992, echoed those comments and suggested the current system - which was robustly defended in a statement by the World Snooker Tour - was not fit for purpose.

"I have been saying it for years," Williams added after making two century breaks as he defeated China's Lei Peifan 6-3.

"It is a 128 [man] tour and we never get 128 entries. I think it should be smaller, definitely. I think if you make it on to the main tour, you should be guaranteed a living. The only way you can do that is by cutting it down.

"Where is the development? There are not many UK youngsters coming along because they are playing Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins and Judd Trump in the first round of tournaments. How are you going to progress with a draw like that?

"I texted [Jason] Ferguson [chairman of snooker's governing body] the other day saying, 'if you are going to have top-ups then stop the top-ups having every tournament'. How is that fair? There is no pressure and they are free rolling."

This season, there are only 122 professional players on the World Snooker Tour, mainly because a number of the amateur tournaments which offer tour cards as prizes were not played as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

This means the best amateurs, ranked by virtue of their performances at Q School - in which Si finished fifth - are effectively guaranteed a place in 128-strong tournaments.

Didn’t Barry Hearn get rid of prize money for first round losers? (Checked and only four tournaments - Grand Prix, Worlds, Tour and player champs - have prize money for first round exits.) I think that’s harsh and could put off a lot of players turning professional. Why pay to travel to a tournament while potentially being out of pocket? I’m sure most sports pay all professional participants in an event.
We aren't walking through the storm now - we are the storm.

I think the idea is to stop players just coasting along for the time they're on the tour. not saying I agree with it but I think that's the idea behind it.

Is the UK not on the BBC?

The first round in on Eurosport, BBC start on Saturday.

Isn’t that just like us, City, Chelsea, Barca etc wanting to start a super league though?
