Murray in his prime would have eaten him alive. It's sad to see this.

And did do every time.

Oh Andy, wish it didn't have to end this way. Isner is an absolute bore to watch, but scarily efficient on grass.
I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close

While i agree Murray wins in his prime as he would have returned better, still think it was a fine effort. Isner can’t have played many better more consistent matches than that

Much harder to consistently serve at 135mph+ if you're not tall, simple biology and physics really

Sad to see Andy go out this way, 36 aces is just shite though. I get some people will say it’s a skill, but seeing so many in one game makes for mind numbing.

If you're going to be good at one thing in tennis the serve is probably the one you'd want. The most important shot in the game, with an outstanding offering you can compete. 14 titles and a Masters event and he's probably got the worst groundstrokes of any top 100 player. Can't say he didn't max out.

Just to add to that, obviously action and skill plays a massive part too, Roddick is probably the shortest player I can think of to have a big booming serve partly because his flick action tossed it so high, was mildly fun to watch in its own way.

Always loved a big Federer serve at break point down as well but him and Sampras were more about placement.

In fairness he's way better than only top 100 with his net play, even accounting for the fact his serve allows him to get into stronger positions at the net most of the time.

He's got a good doubles record but you'd expect so when he's 9 feet 7 and players are returning with the racket pretty much vertical all the time.

Just googled and Sampras was only 6ft 1 as well, he felt 2 or 3 inches taller in those times I'm sure  ;D
I was about to respond to your previous message with Sampras. No discussion about serves is complete without Pistol Pete.

Yeah he definitely seemed taller as a child without as many huge freaks against him but as my edit says, I'd say he was also about placement and net proficiency which are more aesthetically legitimate skills

Haha yeah exactly - all I'd say is in an era of baseline slogging it's alright to watch a contrast of styles at times, but obviously can't stand when two big servers face each other.

Tennis is just one of those weird sports where the "neutral" tends to side with the big name rather than the underdog. Can't think of any others where this happens, at least to this level.

People like supporting winners in individual sports. It’s not like team sports where the club has existed 100 years and you can follow them your whole life.

They should get rid of the second serve. It would improve the game as the first serve is completely no risk. No other shot has no risk. Therefore, it gives a massive advantage to tall, fast servers.

Take away the second serve and they can still try those massive serves, but at least there is some risk.

Sounds like a shocking idea that.

Nothing wrong with the current rules.  They've done everything possible to take the serve and volley out of the game already.

People complaining that someone who is 6'10 has a huge serve!   ;D

Dont watch tennis nearly as much as I used to, can someone explain wtf is the deal with Kyrgios? Every time I see his name or a match he’s played in he’s involved in some sort of controversy or trouble, seems to be talented but ruin it with constant controversy, is he just a bit of an ego maniac?
