Mental note not to get sent off away to Apoel Nicosia or generally be a fat waster with a soul glow hairdo otherwise Freedom may never wish me Happy Birthday again.

He's 47?! That's scary though, that's made me feel old. For someone of what feels like a not too distant vintage to be 47...I remember him scoring on his home debut and all being well with the world. Where does the time go!

Might as well say Happy Birthday Sami - a legend, and Coates - a legend in the making.

Yes it was. Those two goals against Apollon Limassol were Paul Stewart's last as a Liverpool player.

I had £2.00 on Ruddock at 25/1 for 1st goalscorer in the Villa game.
He was the same price every week, and I always thought he was good value and backed him every week.
He scored from one of those indirect free kicks 6 yards out after Bosnich picked up a back pass.

Shitty horrible little stadium as well.
Away fans were banned from going there around about that time.
I remember going there some time in the 80's and walking along to the ground with a load of reds when one proper Scouser said when the ground came into view, "fucking hell, it's a subbuteo ground" ...

I went to the Grimsby game. We took ages to score, then they equalise, and somebody then scores from about 30 yards out in stoppage time in extra time to win it for them. Loads of Grimsby there as well.

It was Phil Jevons who was on loan from the Bitters. He's plying his trade at Morecambe now. To be fair it was a magnificent strike which left Kirkland grasping thin air, and the Grimsby fans behind that goal naturally went ballistic. Think they only had two chances in the 120 minutes, but they took them both and we were out.

Phil Jevons is still a good player at 32 even though it is ten years since he scored that stunning winner for Grimsby at Anfield. I watched Morecambe play Stockport at their new stadium almost a year ago. Morecambe won 5-0 and Jevons scored a hat-trick. Oddly, all of Morecambe's goals came from players born in the Merseyside area. Jevons and Jim Bentley (now Morecambe's player-manager) were both born in Liverpool and Scott Brown was born in Runcorn.

1990 Crewe Alexandra (Rumbelows Cup 2nd round 2ed leg) Gresty Road 4-1
Ian Rush 18' 48' 74' Steve Staunton 42'
Att 7,200

I remember this not for so much for Ian Rush's hat-trick as for the other goal (our second on the night). Crewe goalkeeper Dean Greygoose came to the edge of his area to head the ball out of danger (or so he thought) but Steve Staunton chested the ball down and volleyed it back over his head from about 35 yards.

Rush's second goal was his 250th first-team goal for Liverpool.

Here's a clip of all our goals that night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyXNVZEOkPI

1982 West Ham United (Division One) Upton Park 1-3
Graeme Souness 77'

Having lost at Ipswich the previous weekend, I remember that this performance at West Ham was absolutely woeful. Even in seasons when the championship was won (like this), there were still some wretched games and this was definitely one of them. Two weeks earlier almost exactly the same team had thrashed Southampton 5-0; four weeks later they would do the same to Everton. We lost seven of our twenty-one away matches in the 1982-83 First Division season. That seven included the last four of the season so the performance and result at West Ham were the exception rather than the rule.

TRANSFERS ON THIS DAY

OUT

Jimmy Carter (1991)

Mention of the name still sends a shudder down my spine even now twenty years later.

Just eight first-team appearances in a thankfully brief Liverpool career including the afternoon at Chelsea when he came on as a substitute (for Gary Gillespie) but was later substituted himself (for Ronnie Rosenthal).

I am not sure how we persuaded Arsenal to pay half a million quid to take him off our hands. But it did at least recoup a fair chunk of the fee we had paid Millwall at the start of the same year.

That Leeds game was one of my first games. If i remember correctly they were Rushy's first league goals for Liverpool. Can't really remember too much about the game, except that little piece of history!

It might well have been that international breaks caused a lack of competitive fixtures on this day, in the recent past anyway.

From the games you have listed, I went to both testimonials (Grobbelaar and Nicol) and I too remember Ian Rush's first League goals against Leeds in 1981. Going further back in time, I was also at the Tottenham defeat in 1970 where I sat next to Liverpool boxer Alan Rudkin who at the time was President of the London Branch of the Supporters' Club.

Right now..read this story somewhere before either in programme or Echo or somewhere quite a few years back.I suppose I could googgle it but would rather read it on here from possibly someone who remembers it.Right, it was about this kopite back in the fifties early sixties I think maybe earlier, anyway he had this routine before  the match started when the Kop was full and the crowd was trying to amuse itself you know what i mean.He would go on too the pitch with an imaginery ball place it on the penalty spot and make a big drama out of taking the 'penalty' much to the amusement of the crowd. This routine went on for quite a while if i remember, but for some reason he stopped doin it.Anybody out there elaborate on the story would love to hear more stuff bout this and what happened to him whoever he was.

Question got asked in Shankly Boy's Auld Arses thread..... have a vague memory of this been mentioned at parties  :D

I certainly remember Bruce Grobbelaar missing a penalty in his testimonial match but I don't remember the same thing happening to Steve Nicol. The main thing I recall about the Nicol match was Maurice Johnston guesting for Liverpool and scoring at the Kop end to make the score 1-1.

I certainly remember Bruce Grobbelaar missing a penalty in his testimonial match but I don't remember the same thing happening to Steve Nicol. The main thing I recall about the Nicol match was Maurice Johnston guesting for Liverpool and scoring at the Kop end to make the score 1-1.
was either 1-1 or 1-2 and nicol hit the inside of the post from a penalty.

was 1-1 actually. he was doing a lap of honour when the third went in

Thanks for clearing that up  :). Oh and I do remember that a lot of people missed the winning goal by Alan McInally because they were watching Nicol do his lap of honour.

One funny thing I recall from that day was Steve Bruce playing for Terry Venables team. He got roundly booed every time he touched the ball in the 2nd half when he was defending the Kop end.

International weekends means I suspect recent October 11th fixtures are also thin on the ground. I recall Spurs playing brilliantly when they beat us 1-0 at Anfield in 1986, and Oyvind Leonhardsen scoring his 1st LFC goal in 1997. It came for the Reserves in a 1 all draw v Leeds.

Happy Birthday Ronny Rosenthal. Sounds like he's got a big night out lined up - he told me he was planning on hitting the bar early.

Here's a clip of the two goals from the Ipswich match in October 1980 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CearMgbS1k#t=178s

There is no evidence there that Frans Thijssen (or any other Ipswich player) threw a piece of mud in McDermott's direction as he was about to take his penalty-kick. But the mud-slinging incident sounds very familiar. So I have done some research into this.

The home fixture with Ipswich was also drawn 1-1 in the 1979-80 season (23rd February 1980). It was in THIS match that McDermott missed a late penalty (86th minute) that would have won the match. Paul Cooper saved the kick but Liverpool players appealed to referee Bert Newsome that McDermott had been distracted by Thijssen throwing mud at him as he ran up. The referee, however, refused to have the kick re-taken. This incident occurred only a minute or two after Eric Gates had equalised David Fairclough's early goal.
