Yes, Espanyol was never gonna let him go for such a cheap price if it wasn't for his fallout. Nothing new.

I am optimistic that Riera could be a good player for us. He provides something we badly need, and with very good players around him he can only raise his game. As long as he sticks to what he is good at he will fine.

The link to Riera's full press conference is on the first page of The mirror's site.

Listening to the press conference I love Rafa but I wish he would stop saying "We are keeping Alonso". Can't be doing much for Alonso's confidence that.

Riera speaks good English by the way.

Quote
Riera aims to show his Liverpool quality
Andy Hunter
The Guardian, Friday September 5 2008

Liverpool's transfer deadline day signing, Albert Riera, has insisted he should not be pre-judged on his Manchester City career given his vast improvement since a brief and undistinguished spell in the Premier League three years ago.

Riera, the ultimate answer to Rafael Benitez's exhaustive search for a new left winger this summer, made 19 appearances at Eastlands under Stuart Pearce only for City to decline the opportunity to turn his loan spell into a permanent transfer. Since then, however, the 26-year-old has played an integral role in Espanyol's rise, became a Spanish international under former coach Luis Aragones and was Benitez's preferred candidate for Liverpool's midfield once he was refused the £18m to complete Gareth Barry's transfer from Aston Villa.

Riera, therefore, believes Liverpool have secured a much different player to the one last witnessed in English football. 'When I was at Manchester City, I found out what the Premier League was like and I'm now prepared for it. I'm prepared to do the tackling and not just be the one being tackled!' the Spaniard said yesterday. 'Experience in football is very important, and the last three years have been important in my development. I've been in an Espanyol team that have been playing for big things. We reached the final of the Uefa Cup and had a good first half to the season last year, and I've managed to get into the Spain squad. I felt that now was the right time to make the jump up to a bigger club.'

Riera added: 'When I came to Manchester City it was in January. The team was in the middle of the table, so it was a little bit different to how it is now coming to Liverpool. I was only 22, and I'd only had one year playing in Spain and two in France, which is not as competitive a league as in England or Spain.'

The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Liverpool having resisted Espanyol's attempts to sell him to Everton for £12m. Instead, he will cost the Anfield club an initial £5.5m after Steve Finnan travelled in the opposite direction to Barcelona, with the Spaniards entitled to a significant sell-on fee.

'Espanyol knew that I wanted to come to Liverpool. Liverpool made a big effort to get me here so I am very pleased with that,' he said. 'It's true that Espanyol had better offers but they knew I only wanted to come here, I had repeated that 100 times. They were fighting for themselves to get a better fee and I was fighting for myself to get the move I wanted. That's normal in football. It was a difficult fight, yes, and it was only until the last day that it was done.'

From Balague's website:

Well guys, let me start by saying that, when he is on form, Albert Riera can be one of the best left wingers in Europe. I'd even go as far as saying that, on his best days, he is the best left winger in Europe. I do realise that this is quite  a claim and I must stress that this is only something that we will see when he is on form, playing in an attacking wide position, confident and happy.

Unfortunately, that form can suffer: Riera is someone who can struggle with consistency, he will constantly need an arm around his shoulders and be made to feel important if any manager wants to get the best out of him. He started last term at Espanyol in fabulous form, but without receiving that kind of attention, his form can dip dramatically, as it did over the second half of the season. He's even been known to put on some excess weight if his confidence suffers or he loses focus.

To avoid that happening, and to get the very best out of him, he therefore needs to feel that he is a key player and cannot spend to long keeping the bench warm. Thankfully, I don't think that will happen at Liverpool: as someone close to the manager told me, 'If anyone is going straight in to the side, it's Riera - we simply don't have a better option for the left wing.'

That's the interesting bit. Hopefully that spells the end of Yossi playing as an orthodox LW in a 4-4-2.

It's going to be interesting to see where Kuyt, Yossi and Babel get the majority of their playing minutes from (in relation to positions on the pitch).

Firstly Albert, there was interest in you from a number of clubs so why was Liverpool your number one choice?

I had a clear idea from the first time Espanyol told me there were some offers. There was only club for me and I told them to only talk to Liverpool. Why? Because they are a very big team with a great history and they play in the Champions League. I like the supporters and the stadium and I can't wait to play at Anfield. I know the boss very well from when I was in Spain. He is a coach that brings the maximum level from all of his players and we all want to give 100 per cent for him.

Was it a concern for you that this transfer went right to the final day of the transfer window?

I would have preferred to be here from the first day of the season but it was difficult. Espanyol were asking for a lot of money for me. As well as Liverpool they had interest from other clubs offering more money, but they knew my clear idea was only to come here. They respected my position and accepted the offer.

Up until now people have been asking questions about the lack of width at Liverpool. Is there pressure on you to bring real quality to the left side?

I don't feel pressure. I will continue to play like I did at Espanyol. I will do what the boss wants from me and give my best at all times for the team. I promise to give 100 per cent in every single game and do my best.

Your spell at Manchester City was one of mixed success. Do you feel you have a point to prove to the supporters here at Liverpool?

I feel I am a better player now. I have three years more experience than when I was at Manchester City. Since then I have been a regular in the Espanyol team and played in a UEFA Cup final. I also played for Spain last year. I am still progressing and I am sure I can continue to do that here and help this club win some trophies.

Did you take advice from any of the Spanish players here at Liverpool before deciding to sign?

I talked to some of them. They will help me a lot and I want to help this team get success.

Does the prospect of crossing the ball to Fernando Torres give you a special feeling?

I can't wait to play alongside Fernando. To play with one of the best strikers in the world is perfect for somebody like me who likes to cross the ball. I am sure we will do well together and I hope to create many goals for Fernando and the team.

Rafa Benitez likes to use rotation. Is that something of a concern for you?

I will do my best in every game and I want to play in all of the matches. I want to stay fit and help this team. It's up to the boss whether I will play in every game and I will respect his decision always.

Have you set yourself any personal targets?

Well I can't promise that I'm going to score 20 or 30 goals every season. The only thing I can promise is I will do my best in every game and always give 100 per cent. I hope to show what I can do for the team and help create goals as well as scoring some myself.

Rafa Interview.

Firstly Rafa, tell us a a little bit about Albert Riera's qualities?

He is a left winger with quality. He is good in the air, is a good crosser of the ball and can score goals. He has experience after playing in a UEFA Cup final and also for the national team. He is a better player now than three years ago with Manchester City.

Everybody has been saying that you have needed a genuine wide player. What will Riera add to the team?

He can stay wide and hold his position. He has a good left foot and can open the game up for us. This will give more space to the likes of Torres, Keane and Gerrard. Albert can beat defenders and can cross good balls. That is the type of player we were looking for. On the left we have Dossena, Aurelio and Riera. We also have Babel and Benayoun so we have a lot of good options now.

Is it fair to say this transfer is more of a coup than some people are making it out to be, because you've beaten other teams to his signature?

You have to sign the player you feel will improve the team. In this case we were looking for a left winger who is a good crosser of the ball, can beat defenders and score goals. Riera is that player.

Some people have said he didn't do much at Manchester City. Is Riera a much better player now?

That was three years ago. He has more experience now. He has played in a UEFA Cup final and was one of the key men in the Espanyol side. For me the main thing is he knows the Premier League. We have a lot of players with experience in Europe but he knows this league and he can settle down quickly. That will be a great advantage.

You have a lot of options down the left side now. Can you have too many players sometimes?

We have a lot of good senior players and young players. The competition is good now for each position. Riera, Babel and Benayoun are all different kinds of players which is good for me as a manager.

Will you be a more attacking side now?

Clearly we have more offensive players in the squad now. Degen and Dossena are offensive full-backs and we know we have more shots than anyone else off target. Now I want us to have more shots than anyone else on target! We will then score more goals. We are well organised in defence and last season we scored more goals than any other team. I think we have a very good balance as a team. We need to improve on some things but we are a team that attacks a lot and doesn't concede many goals.

There has been a lot spoken about a lack of width in your side this season. Now you have a winger on board will this put added pressure on Riera to deliver straight away?

Everyone needs to understand that every year the Premier League is more difficult. We want to win the league title but you also have teams who have spent a lot more money than what we have. We have to be together and always give 100 per cent. It's important to back all of the players and give them support. If we do that then they will play better.

Is Riera the missing piece in the jigsaw that can win you the Premier League title?

Always you can improve small things in your squad and clearly we needed a winger, especially for the left side. We had Leto but we had to send him on loan to Olympiacos, so we needed to find another solution. Riera can be a very good solution for us. You cannot talk about one player and say they are going to win us the league. When we signed Torres last season people said he was going to win us the league and it was the same when we signed Keane. If you look at Manchester United, the other week they had a bench of Tevez, Hargreaves, Anderson, Carrick, Nani and Rooney. If we are talking just about money you could say they can't lose any games. You can't gurantee success by just spending money but it certainly makes it easier.

Does the takeover at Manchester City worry you with their spending power now?

I am not worried about this. We are really pleased with our signings. We can sign players like Skrtel, Mascherano and Agger who people didn't know about before, but they certainly do now. You will make mistakes but we are trying to progress and, as I said you have to take gambles sometimes. We have a good scouting department and we know about a lot of players in the market.

Thanks, mate. One thing that gets me is the sudden insistence that Riera's capture was an alternative to Barry. This is simply not the truth- no wait- it's bleddy shameless bollox.
Rafa clearly stated in one of his interviews during the transfer window, that at the end of it, we'll have a natural winger. He mentioned he was looking at Barry, a left-back and a winger. I cannot believe the outright laziness or perhaps intentional bulldung of these...

Whoever fills in the LB position, I'm still alot more confident with whoever's sitting on the bench as a substitute this year as opposed to last year. Even if Aurelio or Dossena is injured we still have great back up with Insua.

I like him. I'm also fairly confident he's going to be a big player for us , since Babel was a mistake , it's obvious we've needed a LW. He should find himself with space in his first few games , space he's got the quality to exploit. Hopefully Torres can feed of his crossng because ,despite Torres being terrific in the air , the service has always been lacking.

Lolzies. More chance of a wank off the pope than beating United, I'm afraid. It is beyond Benitez, apart from when they were at their lowest ebb, when we knocked them out of the FA Cup. They certainly aren't anywhere near there now.

Well, I just hope that Benitez's little mind won't think 'I know, their left-back, Patrice Evra, is quite good at attacking, so therefore I will use Dirk Kuyt on the right, to neutralise him! Yes, that'll work!' In other words, if he sticks to his usual, regressive approach, we will lose. If not, we're in with a chance. But I can see him sticking to the former, to be honest.

yeah but you can't say Babel was a mistake and not justify your reason for it. That's like me saying you're a tit and not saying why.

Well kiddies. When we pay 11.5m for a play I'd like to think he can do the basics. Cross the ball, go to the by-line, pass more than 10 yards and work for the team. All of that is beyond Babel.

No football brain. No heart and completly lacking in machismo. Totally one-dimensional , gives the ball away 9/10 times and his decision making is nigh on laughable.

His dedication not only to the club but the sport is summed when he said he'd rather be a rapper than a footballer. The Dutch Cisse.
