My sister is using my old, old 2006 Macbook pro daily with no problems.  I replaced the HD and the DVD drive at one point so that it has 2 SSDs, and it needed a new battery a few years back. Not the fastest, by modern standards, but perfectly good at what she needs it for.

My current one is a 2012 model and I've never had any bother with it. Does intensive Photo work every day and a couple of DJ jobs.

I can't chance it on one of my machines, the other one doesn't matter too much but having had my work laptop (windows) recently go off it's nut on an update to say I can't be arsed with the hassle is an understatement.

Repair .MOV files on Mac
« Reply #5456 on: October 7, 2018, 04:03:30 pm »
Anyone know of a free way to repair MOV files?

Got a corrupted file that definately has some footage on it from a charity event we recorded last night, managed to run it through some software that is recovering footage but then asking us to pay £60 odd for the file.

Any one know any free software that’ll fix it?

Even if we can only recover some of the footage then it’d be a massive help.

Only piece from an 8 hour event that has corrupted and it’s one of the important bits!

Is it corrupted during recording or while sending over?
You could try plopping it into iMovie and see if it allows you to export some sections of the file.
Could be anything really, so if it was sent via internet try asking for it to be re-send.

Was during recording however the file is still 1.4gb in size and we have managed to get some footage back through sample programmes, but they don’t allow us to download the full footage without paying.

Have you tried running it through a program like Handbrake?  I know it's a converter program (and I only know it as a Windows program but it is available for Mac) for the most part but it may find the footage recoverable?  Just ensure it's a copy and not the master though.

Having problems with my Mouse for the Mac. It won’t connect whatsoever so I can’t even log into my account, I’ve had it on charge for ages and still nothing but when I do take it off the USB the ‘mouse off’ notification pops up.

It’s the one that doesn’t require any batteries but I’m thinking it may have just died altogether? The keyboard still connects.

No issues whatsoever and was advised by my Mac technician friend it's okay. He does, however, advise anyone with the 'older' version of MacBook Pro (say, pre 2012) to run a google search and check if anyone else with your specification has had any issues.)

Took it to the shops and they're quoting me about $550-600 to replace. Would get a new one at that price!

Battery probably dead, unless it's something daft like you've knocked the little switch to off ;D

Upgraded to Mojave on my late-2015 iMac 5k (upgraded to an i7) - and it feels a bit sluggish. Random crashes here and there, and certainly more unresponsive app occurrences since I bought it.  It's been through El Capitan, Sierra & High Sierra, and this is the slowest it's felt.

Tempted to downgrade here.

I've got the retina iMac and since the upgrade it's been absolutely fine - no crashes, I'd look at what apps are causing the crashes.

It does look like a return to form but the pricing is disappointing. At a few hundred more expensive than the base model it’s replacing it puts it head to head with some seriously equipped PC ultrabooks and also the entry level MBPs.
Yeah, good shout on the MBP, not so much on the PC - just doesn't compare

I've had my current one for 5 years, it cost ~£1100, this one is a bit more but if I get the same out of it I can't complain one bit.

Ok, upgraded to Mojave and it's the ugliest Mac OS I've ever seen.
Sweet ghost of Steve Jobs - the fuck is happening with their once lauded design department.
Dark mode is hideous, especially in Finder, lock screen is an absolute abomination with 'straight outta 90's' drop shadows. App store app, while it was in dire need of redesign, is now just a copy of the mobile App store. Shitty discrepancies in font sizes and different design approaches all over the os. Just a complete shambles and mess - which really speaks about how many fucks they give about their Mac user base these days.

Got a macbook pro through work. Cost 2.5k. Would never buy one myself. It’s ok, but I have issues with keys on the keyboard after less than a year. Only use the touchbar for answering phone calls on the mac

The reason I just came in here was to say that messages keep popping up on my imac screen asking me to upgrade to Mojave.  I was gonna ask if I should go ahead and do it and have peeps had anny problems/issues with it.

One real technical issue I have had is that the Google Drive app did not work, so I had to move to their new app which of course decided to re-sync everything again - thus costing me half a day. It works, if that is your concern - it is just nowhere near as polished as Mac Os releases used to be.
