I love it to bits. I've never seen a show before in which I've so many fave characters. That said I do feel the level has dropped slightly in the first few episodes of this season.

i think i've figured out why this show has dropped off a cliff (for me, anyway): it used to be a show about smart people being buffeted and worn down by the ridiculous, cynical, PR-centred and inherently hypocritical world in which they operate (much like TTOI). the characters are highly capable and highly successful people, and behaved accordingly. the wordplay and humour was correspondingly smart.

this season, it's about a bunch of really stupid characters falling into basic sitcom tropes and situations, and dealing with them in really stupid ways. the dialogue is dumbed down considerably - lots of standard stuff about bodily functions, and lines with nothing other than shock-value - and i don't think i laughed out loud once in the last episode. the acting talent is still solid gold, of course, and that's just about enough to carry it across the line, but the season has been a real disappointment so far.

Some funny moments in the latest. They were all on good form. Selina comparing her eyelids to Keith Richard's ball sack is always gonna get me started and Ben had some absolute doozies. And as Kerry says jonah's moment in the sun was delicious.

It's been a really strong series. The Jonah running for Congress subplot has been a joy to watch.
Jonah recreating Howard Dean's scream in his speech was awesome for us politics nerds.
Richard is now my favourite current comedy character. His switch from being Jonah's opponent in debate prep to being Jonah was brilliant.

And who could blame Hugh Laurie's Tom James for his own, um, congress with Selina given how good JLD looked in that dress?

The characterisation is just so good though.
Richard's 'I'm hitching a ride on a shooting star called Jonah Ryan. Well, he's more of a comet really, as they don't burn up' was perfect. As was their joint interview at the end talking about where they'd be in 20 years.

Selina telling Catherine not to cry cos 'you look ugly when you cry' was pure Selina.

But it was Dan and Amy's interviews than struck me. Everyone calls Amy 'shrill' (even Gary), except Dan, who said she was 'tense'. And Amy said Dan was 'you know, ...fine'.
Will those crazy kids ever get together and bang like they're supposed to?

Back end of this series has been about as good as it gets. I'm really trying to get more people onto it, even just jump into this series which I think has been the best.

Any idea why Ben was nudging books into a bookshelf at the end? Like OCD, or a reference to something else that happend in the series?

Kent is the one with OCD. He was obsessively measuring the books with a ruler so they'd be the same distance from the edge of the shelf.

I love that when Catherine and Marjorie (?) were looking for a sperm donor, they went to Dan, who agreed instantly. Dan is legitimately a terrible person, but he's probably still better than everyone else in Catherine's family and is a good looking guy so he's automatically way ahead in their shared genetic lottery.

Sally Phillips is so goddamn great when she pops up. The conversation about orgasms with Selina last week was just the best.

it's sad how much it's declined since iannucci left. still watchable for the occasional good line, but it has no charm or freshness any longer.
