That's a bit of a co-incidence - the girlfriend stayed in Manchester last night (Went out for a meal) and Lydon was staying in her hotel - she said he was a disgrace - throwing loads of strops and giving it the big "I AM!" - she said he was acting like a complete knob

Talk about selling out - the irony, I suppose, wouldn't have have been lost of earlier versions of himself.

My singles are all boxed ( hundreds of 'em covering 1997 to late eighties - then dance happened and I stopped buying) up since we moved house and this Christmas Holiday I'm going to dig em all out and no doubt play em...so expect  a FlashingBlade nostalgia trip post late December

Now that IS a party I would want to be invited to.  Must go and dig out my old singles too.  ;D

Ha!  Here I am supposed to be doing some work and catching up on some new music and instead I'm listening to "Chinese Rocks" and "Outdoor Miner".

Has anyone ever written a simpler, more beautiful tune than "Outdoor Miner"?

for those wondering what all the debate is about .... the blogger below has today uploaded "Never MInd The Bollocks" ... as well as The Clash "London Calling" and Televisions "Adventure" (the still very good one which people tend to forget about while they rave about "Marquee Moon" :) )

compare and contrast to your hearts content :)

edit :  and on this blog from around the same time Iggy Pops "The Idiot" (you'll also find the hugely influential "Velvet Underground and Nico" album)

"the late 70s were a great time for music" .... discuss :)

Autographed!! Copy of Capitol Radio!!..whatever happened to "No More Heroes"!?...is that an EMI or Virgin Anarchy..or that ifffy French label?

It's the original EMI in the black sleeve. First release, I believe.

Apparently one of the things the Clash were very good at was letting their fans go backstage after shows to talk to the band and for signings etc. My Dad says the only band who matched the Clash for that was Motorhead.

Quote
On the subject of singles...no down load ( no matter how illegal)  or shiny new CD will ever match the thrill of buying singles....they don't smell like singles did...*like when I bought Orange Juices' Blue Boy I can recall Pete Burns screeching "Orrrange juice!!...who da fuckin' ell are they!!?" before reluctantly disappearing into the back of Probe to dig it out....I mean does Amazon give you that!!!

On the subject of "No More Heroes" and Mr Burns, my Dad likes to tell the story of how he was castigated in Probe for wanting some single or other "in the picture sleeve" by the same singer who later graced such picture sleeves as "Misty Circles",  "You Spin Me Round", and "Lover Come Back To Me". You can't, apparently, listen to the sleeve.

You really need to rip them to MP3 and get 'em on eBay.

Or not.

At home in the UK, we have a room full of old vinyl and a old jukebox loaded with 250 of my old man's favourite seven inchers. It's ace for parties.

So you got to meet them? What were they like?

Does anyone else here think that London Calling is really really overrated? I've given it time, but I just don't see the fuss. There are some fantastic songs on it, but alot of shite in between as well.

Has anyone ever written a simpler, more beautiful tune than "Outdoor Miner"?
Gorgeous song isn't it. :) Punk's tenderist (is that even a word?) and loveliest moment, after Jayne County's You Make Me Cream In My Jeans ;)

OK here goes...

Tetti I hope your not overdressed for the party I meant 1977 to late eighties...or did you get that?

Sweetheart ..that was one of the features of the Clash ..they had an open door policy to fans at gigs..try and check out Lester Bangs piece in the NME circa 78 when he followed them on tour ...and buying records in Probe was ( thankfully) and experience in itself..me and your Dad obviously have  a lot in common....sell my singles?...perish the thought!! their  the signposts to my youth!...even at my most economic distraught moments Ive never thought of selling them

VdM...now would that be the LP version or the elongated single with the extra piano bit?...Both wonderfull IMO

Jin.. London Calling...yes it is!...

Decision I have faced a few times is whether I sell my original 7inch copy of Joy Division's Atmosphere on Sordide Sentimentale.  It gone for over £400 on ebay again recently and while I don't need the money now, its tempting.

Sure, ther have been other bands who have been inspiring, but the Sex Pistols stand head and shoulders above, because of how inspiring they were and what they inspired (and still do!). The bands mentioned in Filler's original post are a good comparison.

I remember John Peel saying that during the seventies there was nothing new going on (he made passing reference to Genesis and Roxy Music) until the punk scene exploded in London in 76 - sure there were was 'punk spirit' in the US prior to that - but nothing that had the same impact. The Sex Pistols were the very heart and leaders of that explosion.

To understand the impact and influence of the Sex Pistols, you have to go much further than their music - it was what their music stood for. You hear people say about a person "It's as if punk never happened" because it was/is a life-changing experience when understood properly. It brought angst into music and made a statement that simply hadn't been made before - at least not as powerfully. The music industry was never to be the same again. The impact of punk can only be compared to the influenced of Rock n Roll in the fifties in terms of the revolutiuon it brought to music and the place music has in people's lives.

Personally, I'd hate to think where music would be without it. And as Filler rightly said - Lydon made the biggest difference and he was barely out of his teens at the time.

It may have been life-changing for you - but there are plenty of times, places and bands in history that have made literally world changing music.

To say it was just the Sex Pistols frankly makes the mind boggle.

"It brought angst into music" - yes, of course it had never been there before the Sex Pistols

"you have to go much further than their music" - good job - if manufactured boy bands relied on their music then none of them would get very far.

"the Sex Pistols stand head and shoulders above" in your faulty opinion

"The Sex Pistols were the very heart and leaders of that explosion" - perhaps that particular one - but that is up for debate in itself.

"it was what their music stood for" - a quick buck?

"made a statement that simply hadn't been made before - at least not as powerfully" - arf

"The impact of punk can only be compared to the influenced of Rock n Roll in the fifties in terms of the revolutiuon it brought to music and the place music has in people's lives" - if you're talking from a personal view - then fine - if you're saying it was as important globally to everyone in that era - then no chance.

"Personally, I'd hate to think where music would be without it" - pretty much where it is now - and that's up the shitter anyway

"Lydon made the biggest difference and he was barely out of his teens at the time" - sadly he was a dick then and appears to have managed to still be one

But I do care about them - they were an average manufactured band that were formed to make money and some people because they were influenced (Through reasons nothing to do with the sex pistols themselves) and chose to make this average band into something that they weren't. If you'd spoken to them at the time about this high and mighty ideals of 'what they were trying to do' they would have (Quite rightly) laughed at you.

The irony of older people talking down to others about 'what it meant' is entirely ironic in its import.

but again you fail to recognise the importance of them. They didn't set out to make money, McLaren did undoubtedly. The band themselves just wanted to have a good time.

You'd probably find The Beatles and Elvis's motives were similar, and pretty much every band that's come into existence. And you'll also find there's not many (Ian Mckayes of the world excluded) who'd turn down such lucrative deals.

Are you going to now play down The Beatles (who weren't even thought as the best band in Liverpool at the time) and Elvis's importance?

We know they weren't the sex pistols were not the best musicians, but neither were Nirvana but like Nirvana the music was radically different, spoke to people and was catchy as fuck.

You've probably got a few decent points there - as do some of the other posters defending them.

I shall take it on board and give their music a bit more consideration next time I listen to it.

Does really sound like they did a very good job of influencing some people in a good way.

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

I'll give you one right leg, size large, one owner only. One or two scars around the knee area, but otherwise in pretty good condition.

Any pics?   ;)

You've probably got a few decent points there - as do some of the other posters defending them.

I shall take it on board and give their music a bit more consideration next time I listen to it.

Does really sound like they did a very good job of influencing some people in a good way.

Fair play.

With all due respect Andy, does that mean you'll shut the fuck up now?

I wouldn't have thought so :)

Atleast you can't be accused of being inconsistent. :)

I've always said the Sex Pistols were great.

Most important band in the history of history.

Any Rawkites ever see the Sex Pistols play?
I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

"Not I!", said the man who wasn't born 'til 2 years after...

However, seeing as this has been bumped, check this out:

Most expensive vinyl of all time??? Apparently so!

EDIT: Hang on, I HAVE seen 'em live! ??? 3 years ago during that reformation tour. Doesn't really count though, does it.

As a young one compared to some of the others in this thread, the Sex Pistols completely changed the kind of music I used to listen to.  At a time when I was into metal and bands like Iron Maiden, I just happened to come across them when the internet and a dial up at that first came to me.  I had no access to music before that.  MTV was shite and I never liked it and I couldn't download music either.  So, mostly I relied on getting music from others and buying tapes etc.  And a lot of people around me then were into stuff like Maiden then.  Then, I just happened to come across them as a teenager myself and frustrated and pissed off as I was, I got onto punk like a fish to water.  And since then I've always loved them.  To me they are simply the most inspirational band ever.  For a bunch of guys of that age to get up and say the things they did was amazing.  I used to deliberately do things to piss my teachers at school off but this was on a whole different level.  Absolutely great band and for me, Never mind the Bollocks is the best collection of singles ever.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.
