Yes I know, but my point is, if Diao's cover for defensive midfield, he should have come in then, when Hamann was out. Or else when is he going to get games?

He looked good against Arsenal and half decent against Bolton in the CC in midfield but think those are the only 2 games he's got in central midfield in maybe over a year. I don't think he can play anywhere else.

Just let Welsh come in, its not like Diao's taking up a vital position to our set-up.

Exactly. Dya expect his best if he doesnt play in his best position on a consistent basis? I dont.

As I said the prime example is Bruno. Finally gets a run in his best position an starts to play well. Coincidence? I think not.

Thats not the point Ian, the point is, he's in the squad but he's pretty much nowhere near getting a game in his best position. Do you think he should stay in the squad ahead of Welsh?

At the minute I'd start Salif over Welshy. I'd loan Welshy out personally. Salif is IMO the back up to Didi.

To give him first team experience an improve him into the player that would benefit us in the future.

Am sure I have said this before  ::)

He's never going to get a run in the side though, why keep him?

Houllier doesn't see Diao as the backup to Didi IMO, he sees Gerrard as the backup to Didi, and would just bring in a more attacking midfielder when Hamann's out. As he did earlier in the season apart from Arsenal, where Diao did quite well to be honest.

why not loan Diao out instead

Cos Salif has proved when he has played central midfield that he at present has the EXPERIENCE an the ability to play that position.

At this present time Welshy only ha the potential to have the ability. How dya get potential outta a player? By playin him. From playin footie ya get experience. BUT were in the situation at the minute were we cant get a chance on him an therefore loanin him out is the best way to go with this.

I agree with that. If Ged doesnt see him as good enough to earn a place in the side then he should sell him. But past transfer dealin have shown if Ged doesnt want him he will get rid of him. So obviously Ged wants to keep him hear.

If we were selling Welsh, what would people think then?

People are saying we should sell Diao because he can't command a regular first team place - well neither can Welsh ???

Yes he is younger, but at the moment can't get in the team and so can't get experience. Only solution - send him on loan!

I'm sorry ian but I can't agree

Salif does NOT have the ability or the experience to play or cover for that position

I know it's subjective an all that but i'm not convinced

Welsh will go out on loan and fail and that's the last we'll see of him, just like mellor, we'll be talking about how infact he's not as good as we all saw and thought he was

We will continue with Diao as very poor backup and GH will buy more replacements to completely lock out Welsh

Welsh is not on Diao's wages for a start, and Welsh has 6 years or so on Diao.  Many believe Welsh will turn out to be a better player than Diao, its time Welsh had a chance to step up I think.

Whilst I don't mind Diao, he's not going to get games, so don't really think he should be taking a place in our squad to be honest.

I would be disgusted if we sold Welsh. Absolutely disgusted.

Diao is an experienced international - we have 60 games a season in a good year - the central two midfield berths therefore share 120 games - if Diao was perceived as being worth a place in the side I'd expect him to start 30, Gerrard 45, Hamann 45. But it's not happening. Houllier won't drop either of the first choices if fit which suggests he doesn't trust Diao to rotate him in. He wants to keep him though to have the security of an international on the bench - even if that international is rusty and out of form because he never gets a game - and he never gets agame because GH doesn't trust him etc

Welsh on the other hand shouldn't be commanding 30 first team starts yet or anything like that - but he is good enough to sit on the bench and introduce gradually which will improve him as a player. Diao's detiorating as a player. And as one we've spent 5m on.

that's not the point Monkey, Welsh is not getting first team experience because of Diao

Don't we all want us to succeed ? Is success going to come by having a player like Diao as back up to Garrard and Hamman

Hamman is nigh on 32 years old and has at best a season left

Is Diao ready to step in ?

I thought it was a loan deal!

I'd be pissed off if he was sold as well mate cos I think there is potential in this kid for him to achieve somethin special but loanin him out is the best way to go with this. It can only benefit all parties.

Perhaps I'm over-optimistic about the purpose of this potential loan but I think it will be a great opportunity for Welsh to prove himself. Worked for Beckham, worked for Murphy.

I said in another thread, it seems to be the way it is going that there are now nursery clubs where the best young talent comes through - none of the big sides over the last, say 3 years have really brought anyone through to a great extent (Fletcher has been inducted to an extent)

As for Ged trusting Diao... I'm not sure. I think his trust has had to be limited this season for two reasons
*Performances & Results
*Injuries

Both of which have led to pressure to play only the team most likely to get a result on that day.

Diao £5M
Biscan £6M
Traore £0.5M
Ferri 2M
Diomede £3M

Warnock, Welsh, Otsemobor, Wright (S), Thompson, Matteo, Partridge

Somone going to tell me that these lads would do worse than those journeymen? The latter lot are free and often local remember.

I am all for quality foreigners, its fucking foreign journeymen that do my head in. Get a decent first 16, then let the rest of the squad be made up of local or British lads.

to be honest

I think Diao has has had more opportunities than Bruno ...

I for one have always had faith in Bruno probably coz I had the no 28 printed on my shorts last year, but Ive always believed in him.
Cant say that about Diao or Diouf who's had more opps than most non £11m players would get !!

I have seen bits from the all that have said they have ability to play here. Dioufy aint shown it consistenly enough though. Bruno gets a good run an starts to show his stuff. Salif started last year well an played well against Arsenal this year but I think too few games in the middle of midfield an plenty of injuries havent helped the lad.
