Craig, they must've been really worried about cancer based on those symptoms so you're outcome is fantastic. Hope you're feeling much better.

Did they not prescribe eating Marmite?  ;D

Yeah I’ve definitly got lucky with the outcome. Sunday night whilst having the transfusion was a pretty sleepless night with worry until seeing the specialist around midday yesterday who told me what it was. Personally given it was my breathing/heart palpitations I was convinced it was going to be heart related.

Everyone at the Royal was fantastic though I must say and all the in the CDU (particularly Jonathan who is now heading back to his native Spain) were great.

Stop eating meat, stop eating dairy, stop eating toxic, processed food.  Drink more water and green tea, eat more fruit and veg.   There's lots of food lowers cholestrol if one takes time to do a bit of research including oats, brocolli, avocado, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, banana's, beans, lentils . . . .    Yeah, all the stuff tree huggers eat     :P

Although ironically I was asked if I was vegan as apparently they see the sort of levels of anemia I had a lot with vegans.

For my Dad It lasted 4 months and at times he was in agony.

Every day he was taking 8 Paracetomol, 4 Codeine Phosphate and 2 Amitriptyline.

It went on that long the Doctor said it was Postherpetic Neuralgia

I know all this because I used to go most days and deal with a lot of stuff for him.

I wasn't aware that it could come back again Pheeny.  The 3 times you have had it, has it always been in the same place, on your torso?  I've heard of people getting it on the face and sometimes even in the eye    :(

We get a few vegans at work (cafe) and they are usually OK but I think a lot go vegan without thinking about the nutritional balance. One vegan friend tells me she didn't think when she went vegan as a kid and ended up with low vitamin B levels. Takes supplements now.

Have been having heart palpiltations for the last 3 weeks after a bad bout of flu. Put it down to that and just me exerting myself too much....ended up collapsing in Tesco on Sunday!

Fast forward 8 hours in A&E at the Royal and it turns out I had half the red blood cell count that I should. Couple that with quite a large and sudden weight loss over the previous 4 weeks and the Docs were going down the path towards things like a blood cancer. Was admitted straight away and had an emergency blood transfusion (2 units) over night whilst they carried out more tests.

Thankfully it’s not cancer, but turns out my antibodies in my stomach are attacking my own protein enzymes which is preventing me absorbing vitamin B12 so my body can’t produce red blood cells, which was then causing the heart palpitations. Transfusion has gone a long way to helping me in the short term but going to need 3 injections of B12 a week over the next month and then regular injections going forward.

Could have been a worse outcome I guess!
Sounds scary as that Craig so it's great to hear you got a positive outcome.

What is the deal with Blood Pressure folks? My diastolic has been going up to 115, while the systolic has been behaving and went up to 152 once, but hovering around 125-138.

That diastolic is really high.

Have you been given blood pressure tablets?

See a doctor, pronto. Mine got as high as 210/105, and they were readying for a possible code.

Its not common for it to come back I'm just one of the unlucky ones. Always been on my torso but the 2nd and 3rd times I knew the symptoms so caught it early and got the meds going straight away so didn't suffer too much.

I actually did not phrase my query very well.... ;) Yes, I have seen the GP (lord it takes so long to get an appointment these days. I wish it was quicker, but I had to wait weeks). I am on an ACE inhibitor since yesterday. It takes a few days to really have full effect, as I understand it.

My question is: how can the diastolic be so high, while the systolic is kind of normal for a young bloke like me ;) (49 and counting).... I think these auto-immune deficiency conditions are still not very well understood.

I hope you are doing alright now PoP and you've got it under control.

Weeks? Don’t most GPs just take bookings for appointments that day?

Booked in at 8am this morning for 3.15 today. Have to have B12 injections every other day until end of the month so I’m hoping I can persuade them to prebook the appointments today rather than have to ring every morning.

You can call at 8:00 AM, but

2) You get through, but there is no slot left.

I took me weeks. I walked to my practice and asked them, detailing my problemo.

Cheers for all the advice lads as taking it to heart, ignore the pun as definitely less snacks / treats the past few weeks and a better diet all round is helping as down to 80.5kg (losing a kg a week right now). Reading through the past page also got me thinking I am alright as the likes of Craig, Soxfan & Pop look like they could be in the knackers yard ;)

Crazy thing is anyone I tell I have high cholesterol are a wee shocked as another friend said this weekend they would never think it as look pretty fit. Basically we all should take a note whats going on inside as we rarely get a warning before the man above could stop us in our tracks with a wee bang. Dont ignore symptoms or unusual headaches / pains etc as we should never be too busy to call a Dr for some advice.

 ;D

I'm back at full health now. Between the two units of blood I received last Sunday night and the 4 B12 injections I've had since I feel great.

Looking at some of the symptoms of what I've got (Pernicious Anemia) I've probably had it a long time, and relatively severely for maybe 12-14 months. I just put those symptoms down to other things and cracked on rather than going to get checked out.

All those symptoms have gone now, and my energy levels (which were next to nothing as I only had half the amount of red blood cells transporting oxygen around my body) have gone through the roof. Feel better than I have for a long time.

So here's what you can't do:

You can't look at that packet of "Salt and Malt Vinegar" crisps that you're mate left in your house, and say "What will one bag of crisps do to me, eh? What harm?"

Palpitations, nausea and a slight tightness across the chest is what one bag of salty crisps will do to you, that's what!

What causes that, is it the salt or the chemicals in the food?

Week today I'm going to be admitted to Broad Green to have an Ablation carried out on my heart for Afib & Aflutter! Second ablation in just over 2 years.
Last one worked well for nearly 24 months but the nasty rhythmn decided to return just before Christmas!

Last time was on the same day that we played Southampton away in the League Cup. This time we play Bayern at Home in the CL! Have to find a crap stream that work on the hospital Wifi. Hopefully it'll be a much more positive result this time round.

Not sure how I'm supposed to stay calm for the next few months to recover ;D
