Lionel Messi
« on: March 14, 2010, 09:06:21 pm »
Yes the man deserves his own thread.

Well what can be said about this young man, I would go as far to say he is "The Best" player Since Maradona.  Come the end of his career I'm sure he will be regarded as "The Best" player to grace a football field ever.

Legend at the age of 22.

Another year or two of performances similar to his current form and safely say he's the best I've ever seen.

I was at footy during the game, but looking forward to watching Revista and I hear he was incredible today.

If he wins a world cup I see no reason why he can't be described as the best of all time. Seriously.

If he does what Maradonna did in 86 where he literally won it on his own and went from the half way line in quarters and semi (twice) then yes. But Diego will take some beating.

Don't forget he also went to Napoli when Serie A was the best league and won the title for them which was amazing.

I'm gonna get so ripped for this, haha. But what does Messi do that CRonaldo doesnt do?

Personality/humilty being left out of it, ofcourse.

And then something that I wont be ripped for. I think Zidane was better and I think the real Ronaldo was better.

Messi's a far more natural dribbler on the ball. It's easy to see it- compare how Ronaldo and Messi get past players. One does it by pure pace, strength and snazzy skill, whilst the other does it all without having such great pace or strength. Messi's also a far better team player I think- he puts the legwork in. You could easily compare it to Kuyt. Can you do that with Cristiano "Arms in the air whilst I've lost the ball and my team's getting counter attacked" Ronaldo? Nope.

As for Zidane and the Real Ronaldo. All about opinions because it's a subjective thing I think. But for me, Messi's easily the best player I've ever seen. Utterly mesmerising that the short arse has so much balance and such a massively reactive brain which is in complete tandem with his feet. It's how he can get past players without being the fastest or strongest (though not to say he's slow and weak).

(P.S: Iniesta's probably better than Messi at the whole getting past players without a lot of pace/strength, but their goal and assist returns are incomparable- Messi's on another planet)

I think this post is more sensible than those saying Messi is the best of all time. Players currently playing are always hyped up over players of the past. Messi has played his entire career in one of the strongest club sides in club football history. He has not carried them on his back. He is an absolutely world-class winger and one of the finest dribblers of the ball, ever. But he has not done anything so far to be alluded as the greatest player of all time.

Maradona carried Argentina on his back. Zidane carried France on his back.

He's a much better passer of the ball, especially in confined space, he understands how to play possession football and puts the team above himself. For evidence, look at last years CL final where Ronaldo tried to win the match by himself and win the worlds best player tag in the process. That game showed the real difference between the two, Messi seems to have no ego and doesn't regard himself as more important than his team mates.

I think Messi is better than Ronaldo but neither were particularly impressive in that final (for their caliber), Messi took a few long range shots himself. Of course his header was brilliant.

Lionel Messi Season so far

Games - 34
Goals - 24
Assists - 9
Shots - 130
SHG - 69

53% of shots on target.
34% of SHG were goals

Cristiano Ronaldo

Games - 22
Goals - 21
Assists - 3
Shots - 138
SHG - 57

41% of shots on target
36% of shots were goals

Duno what that says honestly.Obviously 21 goals from 22 games from Ronaldo is brilliant. However in 12 less games then Messi Ronaldo took 8 more shots and 12 less on target.Messi has 3 times more assists aswell.

Zidane carried France on his back.

This is just plain wrong.

I don't want to go off on my Zidane rant again, because I honestly don't see him as any greater than Del Piero, Nedved or Rivaldo.. but in '98 he did not carry France. Before two headers in the final his world cup was far more likely to be remembered for a ridiculous sending off (oh the irony). France weren't dragged to the final by Zidane - he was a non-entity up until that point. France got there by having one of the great defences.

As far as Zidane and Messi go I don't think it's even close myself. Messi is just as elegent (probably more so) and far more effective.

I've always said the real Ronaldo is far and away the best player I've ever seen, but I think Messi is on the verge of surpassing him, if he hasn't already. It's not just the volume of goals or assists, it's the way he plays. It's so perfect, it's almost like a computer game. Those rare moments the ball is close to being out of his control he just turns on this incredible pace and gets there first, before using that similarly incredible balance to draw the foul or beat the marker.

That first touch for his second goal tonight... You couldn't have made that more perfect if you were controlling him on Fifa.

Not sure what to make of that - guess the assists demand quality from other areas, whereas the goals don't .  On paper, Ronaldo - but Messi for me :)

Edit - that's daft - of course, if you're on the end of them, someone's often set it up!  Messi every time :p
