I think Tier 3 will stay the same, it clearly works. According to SAGE Tier 2 is essentially a holding pattern and Tier 1 doesn't really do anything.  I'm guessing the bottom two Tiers will be the ones 'strengthened'.  I also expect a lot more of the country to initially be in tier 3, especially in the South.

Mask compliance in shops where I live in Ireland is 99%. Shops can definitely refuse you entry over here if you're not wearing one. There's literally signs on the door saying it. If you don't wear a mask fuck you.

Whereabouts? I'm near Swords these days and while shops have the sign, staff don't challenge anyone who doesn't wear a mask. I'd put compliance at perhaps 80%.

The plans seem as expected - I think NYE can be put on hold for 1 year - although that's when gangs of young people are more likely to mix so there'll be issues if that's illegal.

I do think schools should go to remote learning or close from the 10th December instead giving families a chance to isolate before Christmas if the government are saying you can see family. Most schools finish on the 22nd so it would be a risk if families got together with elderly relatives and the kids had the virus from that last week of school.

It depends how quickly they can roll them out as well, though.

It's no good saying 'back to normal by Easter' if you're number 25 million in the queue for a vaccine and can't go anywhere without your Covid passport.

There will be parties everywhere on NYE, whether they're allowed or not. The police won't be able to deal with them all and even if they do, it's too late once people have been mixing for hours in a confined space.

It'll be more the young ones mixing on NYE and then descending back on the towns and cities the next week for University. Jan-Feb is going to be worse than the last couple of months after all this. The government are already preparing similar restrictions until Easter as a result, all so Boris can get his saviour of Christmas headlines

Try not to focus on the people who aren't doing the right thing, and look for the positives (over 90% of people wear masks when in places requiring them, for example). Don't spend a moment worrying about perception of Liverpool either, there's nothing to gain from generalising something we don't know anything about (what millions of people are thinking).

This has to be a cause for optimism for Liverpool not being in the highest tier of restrictions. The lockdown and mass testing is driving down that infection rate

According to the BBC the government is expected to allow an hours ‘drinking up’ time in pubs - so last orders 10pm and out the door by 11. I said they should do that at the point they brought the curfew in originally.

Also hopefully means that pubs etc will be reopening as people need their livelihoods back.

Unless the reason is medical then it really isn’t relevant.

Cold hard scientific fact tells you that wearing a mask reduces the chance of transmitting an infection responsible for millions of deaths globally, choosing not to do so for any reason other than medical necessity makes you selfish and part of the problem.

I hate wearing them, they look ridiculous, it constantly itches and it feels restrictive but if by doing so I avoid transmitting COViD (or catching it) then it’s worthwhile.

Opening up the pubs before mad Friday will likely set us back and you can tell pent up demand will lead to a lot of people wanting to get leathered just before Xmas. Fingers crossed there is something in the first part of the vaccine programme in December

If they don’t open the pubs,  Gyms, leisure centres, night clubs, restaurants etc etc the government need to support them.     The way it is going not many will survive.   Everyone will then be moaning in the summer that they have nowhere to go!

Sounds similar to the idiotic 'moral contract' proposed by the Premier of Quebec: you can visit people Dec 24-27, but you have to try to avoid people a week prior and a week after You can't negotiate with this.

 It amazes me the amount of people who won't give up their Christmas or New Year's plans for one year. My narcissistic, tradition-bound father-in-law typically ends up making Christmas into a four-day epic gala. There has been no talk of him cancelling or modifying their traditional schedule, despite the fact his 84 year old mother has diabetes and lung problems, and almost all of his children and their partners have an underlying condition, some of which would be potentially deadly if someone contracted COVID.

Problematically hardly any of my wife's family lives anywhere near their parents. The one who lives closest has a partner living in an area four hours away that is currently locked down for a month. His excuse is that he has to drive down there for work anyway because work is exempt from restrictions. My brother in law will have to take a five hour flight to come home and is then planning to take another flight a few days later to meet his partner's parents. Ironically, he lives in an area where all non-essential travel is prohibited at the moment.

Mrs RTG hoped her brother would see the sense in cancelling, but his argument is I'm not going to do anything stupid and that even he'd be resentful for a while if one of his family members didn't show up for Christmas  

Mrs RTG has already been treated like a leper this year, because she skipped Easter after taking the sensible decision to not attend after being potentially exposed to COVID. I have an underlying condition that has potentially deadly consequences, so there was more reason to not attend an indoor event.

Her parents have treated her like she is on the verge of a mental breakdown ever since. Given she is a people-pleaser, she'll be at least guilt-tripped into attending Christmas. I can guarantee the 'solution' that will be presented to her is to just wear a mask indoors, even though there will be the expectation to be there for multiple days, especially since they know her workplace shuts over Christmas

If they open up pubs here in December I hope it's the same 'only have a drink with a meal'. I know this gets abused (turn up somewhere order some chips and then keep ordering more drinks) but it stops pub crawls at least.

With it being Christmas (office parties, mad Friday, family and friends meet ups), the staff in pubs and restaurants will need to be strict on big gatherings of people.

A vaccine is around the corner. There's no need to risk hundreds more deaths in our area and fuck the hospitals even more for the sake of a night out, or socialising all Christmas week.

maybe a better question is “how safe is it for gyms to be open”?

Test and trace had stats saying that gyms were only responsible for 2.8% of cases which is safer than going to school, going to a supermarket and going to a pub. Gyms are also essential for health and wellbeing and giving someone the immune system boost that this can give. From personal experience my gym has been cleaner that it was before lockdown with everyone using alcohol wipes before and after using equipment. For me gyms are incredibly safe.
