Moyes was given a free pass by the media.

Eh? Were you hibernating last season?
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

I keep hearing this but didn't he win the UEFA cup in his first season with Ajax, and a League and cup double with both Barca and Bayern in his first season?

Yeah, but you haven't qualified for the UEFA!  ???  ;D  :lickin

He was, relatively speaking. Ferguson left an ageing, not very good squad and look how long it too him to start being successful at Man Utd, it takes time for a new manager, look how well Moyes did at Everton etc. I don't recall any other managers getting away with as much as Moyes did last season.

So if Moyes was the chosen one, what is Van Gaal?

Duh, The Chosen #2.

Well I have to get one correct eventually. ;D

To be fair i've not made any predictions, I've just stated his qualities and I don't think anyone can argue with them. Whether he will bring the glory days back remains to be seen but he has the qualifications to do so for sure.

But seeing as you asked,we'll finish top 4 with him I reckon next season. Easily. ;)

Good appointment. You should be challenging Spurs and Everton next season ;).

Yeah right, Rooney is going to accept Van Persie telling him to keep out of the box and stop getting in "his" position? I'd love to hear Van Gaal explaining that to Shrek. How much will his advertising revenue drop if he isn't able to score any goals and just becomes Van Persie's ball boy?
And they aren't going to miss the loss of Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra all at once? Not to mention Giggs.
Take away the retirees and the utter crap and he'll only have half a squad to work with.

No, you got me wrong. I agree that there will be trouble within the senior players for sure with probably one or two of them leaving. My point was that van Gaal doesn't need top players for being successful if given time to implement his tactical knowledge..
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

it will be interesting how this goes with the combination of the owners suddenly having to deal with change, an inexperienced chief exec and the manager who by all accounts does seem a safe pair of hands

i think it depends how much money he actually gets for transfers and who will go to a club not in the champions league

Aren't nearly all appointments short-term in nature these days?  United had a golden opportunity last summer or should I say before last summer.  Plan the succession.  They had time to search and evaluate the candidate.  But now they find themselves in the same position as nearly every other club that sacks their manager.  They are prone to who is available which limits your options.

So if he isn't supported to rebuild he'll be going into next season with a defence of

                   De Gea

Rafael  Smalling  Jones  Evra/Buttner

and a midfield made up of Carrick, Cleverley and Fellaini.

I hope you are right!  ;D

Van Gaal will chose a core of around 17 players and you can bet that there will be a lot of suprises. There will be players out of favour pretty early, f.e.Fallaini, probably Rooney, I suppose, with no chance of getting back. Normally it takes van Gaal, as any other coach, a little less than a year for making it work the way he wants.

Personally I can't see it work still as the english press won't give him the time needed especially as he will be messing with them from day one..

Great news, i'm glad it's finally been confirmed.

He's authoritative, likes attacking football, a great coach and a winner.
Why is everybody so sure he will be a disaster?

It will be interesting to see if his fast-passing game translates from leagues where there have been one or two top teams dominating the league and the rest largely accepting their place as fodder, to a league where even on the last day, with nothing to play for, the opposition team will press hard and try to win. There are no "gimme's" in the Premier League, for sure.

Having said that, if it works even 75% effectively, United will be in the top four for much of the season. Whether they challenge for the title or not depends on a number of factors (sorting the defence, raising the goals scored, Van Gaal not exploding at Old Trafford)

A good appointment for United, but a few things have to fall into place for it work to its fullest.

Serious question. How much of an impact has had at your club? Yeah he won the league but your recent successes domestically and in Europe I've read have been partly attributed to him. Is that accurate.

Challenging in his first season is too much of an ask, as you say, there are quite a few problems and like Rodgers with Liverpool it will take a while to implement his style onto us. As long as we get to see positive, attacking football next season i'll be happy though.
