RAWK’s own top 100 fave songs of all time

Open to suggestions as to how best to score the thing but can’t be that difficult. Say everyone picks their top 20 with 20 points for top choice down to 1 point for 20th choice.

It’ll take a while I guess but should be good fun.

Yeah? No?

Not one of them get in my own 20 but some standout songs there. But that's the beauty of doing something like this. So many differing tastes and opinions but ultimately if enough can be arsed to take part then eventually some sort of common pattern will emerge. I'll gladly do the scoring but I guess we'll just have to see if it passes the RAWK cynicism test and enough folks like your goodself et moi are willing to put their "genuine" heartfelt top 20 out there.

I've only got 5 of the 20 dug out at the moment.

I did something similar on the old Guestbook for The Band about 20 years ago. No prizes for guessing what came top in that one LOL

I think if I did a top 20, then did it again the next day I’d have about 15 different songs there. Impossible to do it proper justice.

I like a lot of those songs, but just an observation* - is there a single non-white songwriter or even musician among them?

No room for the thousands of Motown records, or Stax, Atlantic, Chess, a little known genre called hip-hop, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae/dub, Latin American music in all its forms, the entire history of recorded African or Asian music, or, really, anywhere east of Berlin?

But Peter Gabriel twice.

All a bit Q magazine in the 90s for me.

I think if I did a top 20, then did it again the next day I’d have about 15 different songs there. Impossible to do it proper justice.

Yeah it's an impossible task. I can't begin to try.

But why is that an issue and why does an individual's personal preference need to be diverse so that it covers all genres and styles from around the world? People like what they like, whether it's music from all over the world or from one particular genre? Genuinely curious :)

It's not so much an issue, I understand people have personal preference. I, for example, dislike metal, and it would never be on my listening list.

Obviously the idea of implementing some kind of quota on people's 'favourites' is ridiculous - and is the reason so many people are in the other thread annoyed by the Rolling Stone list, because when constructing it, they have obviously looked at their previous lists and gone 'shit, we haven't included any music of diverse origin, better fix that by lashing a load of hip-hop in there' or whatever. It doesn't work like that.

However, people might be missing out if they've never heard something from the wider world rather than the narrow UK/US pop/rock music base. The Canonical Classic Rock as it were. I mean, you're just not trying, there's a world of sounds out there ;D

And...it's always especially contentious when saying things are 'best' rather than 'favourite' - because 'best' implies a value judgement. And if you follow that to its conclusion...hmm.

It doesn't work like that.

Agree with that. It's good when you're initially getting into music as it's mostly all brand new but then you find what you like and also, these lists always include the songs plus some of whatever's come out since the last list.

Yes, 'best' doesn't really mean anything in this context. 'Favourite' is a much better term as everyone has their own preferences and tastes and lists between individuals vary considerably. For what it's worth, the stuff I regularly listen and love the most isn't really classic rock like The Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin or more modern stuff like Coldplay, Flashdance and MC Hammer shit but admittedly it's still quite narrow. Not to say I don't listen to other things, like I don't really listen to Motown all that much but adore 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder (the 6m Sesame Street version is my favourite :)) and like some of Smokey Robinson's stuff, I don't listen to classical music all that much but love Waltz. No 2 by Shostakovich and so on and they're among my favourite songs of all time.

Number 1 at the mo is definitely Santa Spress's 'Go Wild When I'm Gone'

Am plugging this. Anglo/Japanese husband and wife duo. 20 years I think. He has recently been told he has 12 months to live and she has never wanted to listen to this beautiful song he wrote to her (2021). Heart emoji x 10

This is going to take some time.
I watched a YouTube video and decided that Paul Konchesky looked like a player.

Yeah. Realise that CT. Also depends if enough wanna buy into it. So far doesn’t look too hopeful. I think some are perhaps taking it a bit too seriously. I mean we all know that in reality it’s impossible and meaningless in any purist musical sense but ferfucks sake if you love great music what’s the fucking harm in giving it a go. I certainly will over the next few weeks.

The 1975 - Inside Your Mind, Robbers, Somebody Else, Milk, Falling for You, The Birthday Party
The Smiths - How Soon is Now?
The Cure - Pictures of You, Plainsong, In Between Days
Biffy Clyro - Folding Stars, Mountains, Bubbles, In the Name of the Wee Man
RHCP - Can't Stop
The Walker Brothers - No Regrets

Peter Gabriel - Here comes the Flood, In your Eyes
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
The Hunna - Sycamore Tree, Babe can I call?

Blondie - Union City Blues

There will be hundreds I'm forgetting, but there's a selection of some of my most listened to songs of the past decade.
