Anybody picked one of these up yet? Purely convenience or discovered any must-have apps? Discuss...

Yep. Convenience and 'shiny' factor. Didn't need it when I got it but feel a little lost without it if I forget to put it on.

There was a report on the radio that said they weren't selling well at all. I'd love one but can't justify spending that amount of money on something that I'd consider a novelty for me

I think sales have slowed down (as happens with most things a few months after launch) but it did pretty good numbers from the outset didn't it?
Also it's not 'that' expensive

Sales didn't slow as much as all but stop. They dropped 90% after the launch window.

Sales will naturally drop off, especially on a first gen device where most the buyers will be early adopters.

The drop off numbers are just guesses currently though. What we do know is it sold massively in its first month or so.

Never really wanted one on the grounds that I look at enough screens as it is with just my phone, laptop and TV.

I don't really know much about the Apple Watch, but it seems to appeal more to people who like outsourcing as much as they can (reminders, exercise tracking etc) to technology. For some reason I'm becoming increasingly more put off by that idea. Nothing to do with incompetence or lack of understanding, I just look at adverts for products like the Apple Watch and think there are far better things to spend money on.

This isn't directed at anyone who owns one though. Different strokes and what have you. I'm aware that in this case I'm probably in the minority.

I love mine, but I have to admit there's no compelling reason to get one, yet (although Apple Pay is coming next week apparently).  It just surprises you in little ways, like today when I was in a meeting and got a notification that a wicket had gone in the test match.  It tapped me on the wrist, I took a quick glance and I had all the details.  You do get used to that very quickly, whether it's texts, emails, appointments, or football scores, or whatever.

It helps if you like the design and to want to wear it as a watch, as I think that is half the appeal right now.

I can see the use for them in sports or fitness where it records details of your workout and calories burned etc. The other use is probably in business where notifications come through on the watch rather than the phone for convenience. That's about it right now though.

On the sports side of things though, there are other specialist devices which (I would imagine) do the job just as well or better for considerably less dosh.

Like others on here, I like analogue watches too much to give up wearing one. I don't find it inconvenient to take off my watch and put on my Garmin when I go for a run any more than changing my work shoes for my trainers.

I'm just not interesting enough to need one, I don't think.

I run and cycle, but I don't really care how far, fast or high I've gone. I get messages from the same people almost every day, and whether I reply in the same moment or later on in the day, it won't matter. My job is one of great immediacy so I don't want for reminders, or schedules or deadlines. I don't travel so often that I have to keep tracks on all my tickets and check-ins.

My partner has an Android phone so we can't do the haptic emoticon thing (would I want to? Hmm). I almost never use Siri as my apps give me the particular notifications I want (not many). I also believe my Samsung phone has the ability to use the NFC wireless payment solution, should it ever become commonplace.

For £400-500, I'd far rather get a vintage analogue timepiece and use my pre-existing solutions for my digital life, none of which I feel cause me any hassle and I concede I have too many of anyway.

One of the interesting sales trends that have come from the piecemeal information that has been gleaned about the Apple Watch is that the overwhelming majority of the watches sold have been the absolute cheapest (and in my opinion, best looking) black sport model, so I wonder whether their margins on it will be relatively low.

I love Apple gadge. But the watch? No thanks. You can buy a good 2nd hand omega for less than some of them and it will be worth more in 10yrs time.

You cant beat a good analogue timepiece.

It's estimated they've sold just over 3m iWatches in the US alone (online only, not walk in sales at their stores) at an average price of $505.

Sales have slowed from something like 30k a day online in the US in it's opening month, to approx 10,000 a day currently.

Why the Apple Watch is flopping

Can't see much of a future for the watch. Apple would've been boasting as usual if the sales were meeting expectations. People that want a fitness tracker will simply get a fitbit, which is currently outselling the apple watch, or if they really want a nice watch will get a Rolex out omega or something like it.

The apple watch will be relegated to the "other" section of the store, next to the apple tv  ;D

Apple TV is one of their highest growth products, they're building a whole media package to go with it due to its popularity.

You could be right regarding the watch, but I think it'll evolve into more of a health tracking and payment device than anything else. I know the health tracking stuff is something they're investing massively in.

With the Iphone and the Ipad, I just knew they had it right, that those things would be big. The watch? That's one device where I value the old stuff. No need to charge, basic timer functions and accurate display of time. Nowadays I don't even use a watch. The Apple Watch is not for me. Might be for younger people, but not for me.

First time using Apple Pay with it today. Worked like a charm

Apple Pay is one I think could be big. I think they have that one right, with the fingerprint approval thing.

iPhone

Apple Pay requires the Near Field Communication antenna and Touch ID on iPhone 6.

To pay at checkout, just hold your iPhone near a contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID. Apple said you won't have to look at your iPhone's screen, because a subtle vibration and beep will confirm that you paid correctly. There's also no need to open an app or wake your iPhone's display.

In Pocket-lint's hands-on, we found that your fingerprint confirms the payment, or you could enter a passcode if you haven't setup Touch ID. Once approved, a receipt is recorded in the Passbook app so you can see what you've purchased.

Watch

To pay at checkout, double-click the button below the Digital Crown on Watch while also holding the face of Watch near a contactless reader. Similar to Apple Pay for iPhone, a pulse and beep will confirm that your payment information sent correctly.

Well my fitbit charge HR packed up recently so I splashed out on the Apple Watch. As we are up to Series 3 now I assume it has been enough of a success that Apple have kept going with it.

Anybody know how many they sell now compared to a couple of years ago?

As many have mentioned above no compelling reason to get one, but I like the fitness monitoring stuff, notifications and flexibility of changing the watch face.

Any tips and tricks or recommendations for good apps for the watch?

If anyone has one and the face "pops off" spontaneously which happened to me after 2 years - they replace it free of charge. Apparently it's a common/not uncommon problem - the battery can expand for some reason and that pushes the face off. They sent me a new one.

I bought the mrs a nice fitbit on Tuesday, and she happened to win an Apple Watch from work on the same day and was nice enough to give it to me. I'm liking it so far, and am half tempted to have her return the fitbit and pay the extra to get one for herself.

Also take calls on it, get notifications of messages and google maps as well and as mentioned above Apple Pay, as a silver surfer it is a godsend
