Judge strikes down Trump administration rule denying asylum to most migrants at southern border

A federal judge late Tuesday night struck down a Trump administration rule that banned most migrants from receiving asylum at the southern border with Mexico.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly said the administration failed to follow the procedural law governing how regulations can be implemented, which requires advance notice and a period for the public to comment on the proposal.

"These procedures are not a mere formality," Kelly, who was appointed by President Trump, said in his opinion.

The rule was implemented last year by the Justice Department and Homeland Security in an attempt to crack down on migrants from Central America trying to enter the U.S. It makes all applicants at the southern border ineligible for asylum unless they had previously applied from another country or are the victims of sex trafficking.

"The United States is a generous country but is being completely overwhelmed by the burdens associated with apprehending and processing hundreds of thousands of aliens along the southern border," Attorney General William Barr said in a statement at the time.

Immigrants' right groups promptly sued to overturn the rule in California and D.C.

They sought a preliminary injunction to keep it from going into effect while the legal challenge played out. Kelly, who sits on the federal district court in D.C., denied their request while a federal judge in California granted an injunction.

The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that the new policy could go into effect.

Trump: Black Lives Matter mural in NYC a 'symbol of hate' that would denigrate Fifth Avenue

President Trump on Wednesday lashed out at New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) for moving ahead with plans to paint “Black Lives Matter” along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, calling the mural a "symbol of hate."

Trump also criticized city officials for agreeing to shift roughly $1 billion from the police department as part of its budget for the coming year. He complained that the financial cuts, paired with plans to paint the mural along Fifth Avenue, were an affront to law enforcement.

"NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury avenue,” Trump tweeted.

The president tweeted that those actions will “further antagonize New York’s Finest.” He referenced a chant at a protest five years ago in which demonstrators shouted “pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon.” The chant has not been documented at recent protests over the May 25 death of George Floyd.

“Maybe our GREAT Police, who have been neutralized and scored by a mayor who hates & disrespects them, won’t let this symbol of hate be affixed to New York’s greatest street. Spend this money fighting crime instead!” Trump tweeted.

De Blasio said Wednesday morning that "Black Lives Matter" will be painted along Fifth Avenue in the coming days. The location of the mural will be right near Trump Tower, he said.

Cities nationwide have painted "Black Lives Matter" in prominent locations in recent weeks in a show of support for protesters who have called for systemic changes to address racial injustice and police brutality. The phrase was painted in Washington, D.C., on 16th Street leading up to the White House, and part of the road was renamed "Black Lives Matter Plaza."

Trump has dug in on his support for law enforcement as the protests persist, painting demonstrators as unruly anarchists and highlighting a small group of individuals who have vandalized statues and monuments.

But his tweets on Wednesday describing the "Black Lives Matter" mural as a "symbol of hate" that denigrates the street it is written on marked a new escalation.

Public polling shows that most Americans support the protests that have happened over the last month. A CBS News poll released Sunday found that 60 percent of those surveyed agree with the idea of the Black Lives Matter movement, and 53 percent of them support people protesting the treatment of African Americans by police.

Pentagon report: Russia working with Taliban, others to 'expedite a US military withdrawal'

Russia is working with the Taliban, Afghan government and others with interests in Afghanistan to hasten a U.S. military withdrawal from the country, the Pentagon said in a report released Wednesday.

“Russia very likely continues to support U.S.-Taliban reconciliation efforts in the hope that reconciliation will prevent a long-term U.S. military presence,” the semi-annual report to Congress said.

“As of February, the Russian government was working with the central government, regional countries and the Taliban to gain increased influence in Afghanistan, expedite a U.S. military withdrawal, and address security challenges that might arise from a withdrawal,” the report added.

The Pentagon has previously accused Russia of supporting the Taliban by providing the insurgents weapons and other materials in the semi-annual reports and other statements.

But the latest report is being issued amid a firestorm in Washington over reports on intelligence that a Russian intelligence unit offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan, a newly revealed form of Russian support to the Taliban some lawmakers say represents an egregious escalation.

Wednesday's report from the Pentagon said Kremlin officials expressed support for the U.S.-Taliban deal in late February and offered to facilitate peace negotiations between the Taliban and Afghan government that Moscow believes is “the best path towards forming an interim government.”

The report also said Russia “has politically supported the Taliban to cultivate influence with the group, limit the Western military presence, and encourage counter ISIS operations, although Russia publicly denies their involvement.”

Alumni of George W. Bush administration launch pro-Biden super PAC

Hundreds of former members of the George W. Bush administration have formed a super PAC to support former Vice President Joe Biden, saying they are alarmed by President Trump’s conduct in office.

The group, dubbed “43 Alumni for Joe Biden,” officially launched Wednesday. The group includes former Cabinet officials and other senior administration members who say they think Biden can “restore dignity” to the White House.

“[W]e’re looking for the largest conglomerate of folks who want to help, whether it’s writing a check, making phone calls, helping to get out the vote, basic campaign 101. We just feel the time now is to restore dignity to the White House, and the current gentleman is not, so that’s why we’re supporting Joe Biden,” said Jennifer Millikin, a committee member of the group who served in the General Services Administration under Bush and the Small Business Administration under Trump.

Members of the group began reaching out to other alumni early last month and saw a quick response among former staffers who were uncomfortable with the Trump administration. The super PAC intends to make public some of its high-profile members in the coming weeks.

“We’ve only been active since June 2, so less than a month, and we have hundreds of former W alumni that are living nationwide and have worked at every single agency including the White House when we were there,” Millikin said in an interview.

“The one common theme between us all is that we understand what it was like working for an administration. We know right now it’s not like that,” she added.

43 Alumni for Biden joins a slate of other GOP groups that have formed to oppose Trump, including The Lincoln Project, which has seen its profile rise over its biting attack ads against Trump.

The newest super PAC intends to separate itself from other groups by solely focusing on positive messages to reinforce Biden’s campaign.

“We are the only group within these other groups that were all 43 alums,” said Millikin. “And unlike…the Lincoln Project and the other groups that we know of, they’re spending tons of money on ads and things of that nature, which is great. We’re going to raise money as well, we’re a super PAC, but our focus is not negative.”

“We just want to focus on the positives, and the positive message to us is we need a gentleman who actually acts like a leader, and again, restores dignity.”

The super PACs specific efforts, which will be rolled out in the coming weeks, will focus on the key swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida and Ohio and are expected to include a get out the vote campaign and events to connect disaffected Republicans who may consider supporting Biden. The group will also release testimonial videos from high-profile Republicans praising Biden.

Millikan admitted that many of the super PACs members do not agree with all of Biden’s policies but believe that the former vice president has the right demeanor to serve as president.

“He’s a good man,” she said. “We as a group have policy differences with him. We’re just looking to have someone in the office who will stand up and act like a leader. We can debate the differences in the way we think about policies, we can have a robust debate, that’s what America’s for. But that’s not happening now, and we feel it will definitely happen with Joe Biden in office.”

The Trump campaign dismissed the new super PAC, painting it as a creature of the Washington establishment that is trying to take down the president.

“This is the swamp – yet again – trying to take down the duly elected President of the United States,” Erin Perrine, a Trump campaign spokesperson, told Reuters, which was the first to report on the group’s formation.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday said that he hopes President Trump does not veto a mammoth defense bill over a plan that requires the Pentagon to change the names of bases named after Confederate figures.

Trump maintains coronavirus will 'just disappear' at some point

President Trump on Wednesday stood by his belief that the coronavirus will eventually "just disappear" even as cases are surging in multiple states this week.

Trump told Fox Business Network that he is optimistic about the economic recovery from the pandemic-induced shutdown, citing recent strong jobs numbers and a bounce-back in retail sales.

"We’re headed back in a very strong fashion with a 'V,' Trump said, referring to a V-shaped recovery. "And I think we’re going to be very good with the coronavirus. I think that at some point that’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope.

Pressed by reporter Blake Burman about if he still believes it will disappear, Trump said he does.

The Lincoln Project could be said to be more anti Trump at the moment, whereas 43 Alumni is definitely pro-Biden.  They're clearly designed to appeal to conservatives of slightly different mindsets and principles.  One is laying out in stark terms what the US faces under four more years of Trump, whereas the other is presumably going to paint a more hopeful picture of what is possible.

You need The Lincoln Project to break the conditioning that many Republican voters have to vote for the GOP candidate even if it were Ghengis Khan. 43 Alumni then has to coax them into realising that voting for Biden wont mean liberal anarchy. They will look to portray him as an establishment man, a steady but firm hand, a man of principles you can respect, even if you don't always agree with him.

If you look at that Trump poster, that's probably the most effective thing that has been put out.  It embraces the fear mongering the GOP employ, but the message is simple and understandable.  The Lincoln Project is employing similar hard hitting, negative tactics.  It's effective and necessary, but also means it's sensible to keep the messages separate.  Good cop, bad cop.
