Sad news. RIP Tommy. For someone who did not know much about Tommy before, his chance interview on the streets with the BBC journalist about the derby game was a great memory. Came across as a humble, polite and well-spoken man.

"Do you remember the derby match in 1967?"
"I do. I played in it."

Very sad news. When that BBC reporter asked him about the Everton game mistaking him for an average Joe, that was fantastic. He had a glow in his eyes.

A great bloke, the original sweeper keeper. As a lad I would position myself behind the goal at the Anfield Road end. As we would usually batter the opposition Tommy would often have a chat with us lads, and if anybody had a radio we would keep him up to date with important scores. Once he intervened when a huge photographer we called Hippo threatened to smack one of us "all the way and back" to the end of the terrace. We had been giving him some stick but a word from Tommy shut him up. RIP Tommy.

He played in the very first match I ever went to in 1963. He was a much better keeper than he was ever given credit for and was a key player in Shankly's renaissance of the club. Seemed like a really nice, humble man too. He'll be remembered long after any of the bit part players.

Love it

from the Echo:

Explaining his sweeper-keeper status Lawrence explained: “Shankly said: ‘Right Tommy, you’re not playing on the six yard line. When the ball’s on the halfway line, you’ve got to be on the 18-yard line. If the ball shoots through, you’ve got to be out to kick it - a sort of stopper'. Lawrence added. “At first I was frightened to death. We did it at Melwood a few times, then we tried at Anfield. Well, I’m standing there and the Kop is giving me some stick. ‘Get back on your line!’, they’re all yelling. No goalkeeper did that in those days. I thought ‘Oh my God’. But it worked. I’d come out and do like they do today. You didn’t get sent off in those days either. So I used to bring them down. If they pushed it past me, I’d just hit them.”

Some way before by time but some of the arl timers whose opinions I respect argued to me that he was our best keeper they'd seen (personally my view was and remains Clem, but clearly he was very highly rated by many).

RIP.

RIP Tommy and condolences to his friends and family.

He was a bit before my time but I grew up reading about him and hearing stories from family, red and blue.

I love those clips about the 67 Derby, as his son said you could tell he wanted to talk and I hope he got lots of pleasure from the whole episode and reaction that followed.

Thanks Tommy
