I did new years in Amsterdam once and it was snow and ice. It took me 20 minutes to travel about 50 meters. I was on my arse most of the time.

Not sure about that because its taxed as far as i know, so i doubt the government would do something like that, but i could be wrong.

reminds me of when I was told by somebody in work last year(who tells VERY tall tales) that you can only buy beer if you are Dutch, he was then conveniently blown out of the water by another lad who went with him.  Cue lots and lots of backtracking

You can still buy ok but they are looking to bring in membership only schemes . This is happening already down south with the rest of the country set to follow by next year I think . I feel this may put some tourists off visiting Amsterdam but the Dutch authorities seem to think that wooden shoes and rubber cheese will keep them coming .

What do you mean by membership only schemes?
Would it be like having a membership for LFC tickets and paying $£X ammount a year?

Each coffeeshop would become a private members club limited to about 2000 members . These members are free to buy only from that particular coffeeshop . There is also something about proximity to schools .
Stupid new rules and I hope it does not happen .

Be careful, they have clog wearing mice on their stairs - it's very disturbing.

In all seriousness; from my experience no matter where you went the stairs were the steepest stairs I've ever seen or experienced.  That said, it may have been 16 or so years ago now but it was a fantastic city when I went there and not just because of the weed; it's a beautiful city and we had a great holiday.

I love Amsterdam and Holland I reckon I could live over there. Not just for the smoking as I don't really do it anymore just like the lifestyle.
Love seeing the mums and dads taking their kids home from school on a box onfront of a bike.

A couple of my mates were based in Germany near the border when they were in the Army, they used to go over the border to Enschede to the coffee shops there and they had to be members then in ceratin places, might have been more of a club as I went once and I wasn't a member.

Just spent weekend there, my first visit, went with the wife and left the boy at home with the grandparents to give us a bit of peace.

Now I would describe myself as quite an experienced smoker, been doing it regularly for 22 years (so has the wife). Our first visit to a coffee shop on Friday night blew our fucking heads off to say the least, I chose some 'award winning' mad shit, the most expensive on the list, never in my life have I sampled such strong weed, I thought that the skunk we get here in the UK was pretty potent but it's nowhere near the top of the range stuff in Amsterdam. Within an hour of our first any only spliff of the night we were back in our hotel room, and that hour included 20 minutes of being unable to work the lift properly in the hotel, we must of looked like a right couple of idiots.

Great city, this weekend gone was Gay Pride weekend which meant it was one big carnival.

There are a few good coffeeshops in Amsterdam that are worth visiting. The quality is usually shit in coffeeshops but sometimes you can find good product.

Greenhouse on Oudezijds Voorburgwal has a nice outside terrace, which is a nice place to hang out. They make good milk shakes also. The product itself might not be the best.

Greenplace (Kloveniersburgwal 4) is another place with a small terrace outside. They have quality products too, last time they had some very nice hash.

Voyager (Geldersekade 2) is one of the best in the centrum. Might not be the best decorated or fanciest looking but they sell good product, worth checking out. Had some really nice Kush the last time.

Grey Area (Oude Leliestraat 2). Very small place but good selection. Sour diesel worth trying if they have it.

Barney's lounge is also a nice hangout place. They don't sell weed but you can smoke your own stuff inside and sit down and enjoy a beer. They also have good food.

Talking about beer then..

In De Wildeman in the centrum and Beer Temple are two places well worth checking out! In De Wildeman has a large selection of Belgique beers. Nice atmosphere, very friendly helpful staff. Enjoyed by the locals.

Beer Temple specializes in beers from the U.S.A. They have about 30 taps and god knows how many bottled beers. Worth a visit!

Like someone already answered, yes still open for tourists. They were trying to ban tourists from coffeeshops by the year 2013 but I'm certain that it won't go through. They will realize how many millions they will lose if they stop selling for tourists. The city would be a ghost town. Don't see the point, at least now they make so much money with tourist buying weed. If they stop that, criminals/mafia etc. will have a field day (as if they weren't already but..).

If you're not inna hurry I would go in the spring definitely. But winter is no problem in Amsterdam either.

Last time I was in Amsterdam, in June, we stayed at Hotel Beursstraat (http://www.hotelbeursstraat.nl/). A very simple hotel, nothing fancy. We had a 2 person room with a private bathroom and shower for about 35e/night. So very cheap but like they said in their sign: "Cheap and clean". It was cheap and clean, very small room but hey, you're not gonna be spending your time in the room anyway.

It already has gone through. It was introduced as national law, and recently survived a legal challenge.

Will be bad for Amsterdam, certainly, and damaging to the city's tourism.

There are a few good coffeeshops in Amsterdam that are worth visiting. The quality is usually shit in coffeeshops but sometimes you can find good product.

My friends have all tried it when they've come over in coffeeshops near my flat. None of them have been all that impressed, and I certainly didn't feel anything. But then, I don't think we went anywhere near strong stuff.

My stag do here this weekend, I have 17 guys visiting. I am dreading it!

Hmm, okay. I have some friends in Amsterdam and they were saying that it hasn't gone through yet (this was in mid-june). Do you know when it was passed through then?

Not that I'm really that bothered since don't usually buy anything from coffeeshops but yeah ridiculous thing that weed pass. When every other country are turning towards legalizing in some way at least, they go the opposite direction. Doesn't make sense.
