Now I have my PS5 I’m so tempted to start another play through but is there any indication of when the upgrade version might arrive? If it’s this year some time I might hold off but if it’s still unknown then Dont think I’ll be able to wait

It's CD Projekt Red. They'll release it in November facing death threats and you'll play a decent looking version in March 2022  :-X
I have no idea what I’m taking about

This game is a strange one for me. I’ve played the Elder Scrolls since my childhood (Morrowind). Both Baldur’s Gate games were part of my youth and still is part of my adult life. The Witcher 3 has everything I’m looking for in a game. Yet, I cannot get into it. I’ve tried four times and always end up quitting after I get to the tavern in the beginning of the game.
Maybe I’m just getting old? After reading this thread, I’ll give it another go.

I think I can kind of see where you're coming from. The Witcher series is kind of hard to like for various reasons. Geralt as a character is kind of a twat and so is basically everyone else in the world. I don't know what it is, but I never really liked anyone in all the Witcher games I've played (played the first one a lot, tried various times to play the second one, but never got into it and finished the third one). Add to that that the mechanics and the game itself overall feels kind of clunky and not as "smooth" as other RPGs. You have to l ike the combat, you have to like using different oils and whatnot depending on the situation, you can't really heal yourself with potions, Geralt's movement is clunky, the whole UI is kind of messy. What made Witcher 3 work is that it really tells great stories whether it's in the main quest or whether it's the side quests. Other than that it's not really a classical RPG in my view, because you don't really build a character and loot means next to fuck all. I think that's why liking RPGs doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like the Witcher. It's just so different from the likes of The Elder Scrolls and other RPGs, because they often let you build your own character or the loot mechanics are more important.

The first tavern? At the very beginning of the game?

That's like me saying I can't get into sex cos I once had a peck on the cheek I didn't like.

Give it a go, a proper go. The deeper you get into the game the better.

Yeah, that's a bit of a strange one. Far too early in the piece in my opinion to form an opinion. That being said I'm probably being a bit of a hypocrite as I nearly dumped HZD very early into the game. Voodoo Ray convinced me to keep going and I ended up absolutely loving it, so owe him a debt of gratitude for that.

Still trying to win a game of Gwent.

Nah seriously though, just pissing about around Wild Orchard doing a few side quests to get used to the game mechanics.  Did the "Devil by the Well" contract and the side quest where you have to find the guys brothers dead body on the battlefield.

It seems to be quite a clunky game and I haven't got massive urges to get on it and play all night unfortunately.

Maybe I should do a few of the main quest missions and get into the story a bit more.

White Orchard is just a tutorial area.. you're not going to get heaps out of a tutorial.

Look out for some of these quests once you get through to Velen:

* A Tower Full of Mice
* Carnal Sins
* the whole Red Baron plotline, including Return to Crookback Bog

If you don't like these 3 quests I reckon you can probably put the game down.

Just quoting this as a reminder for when i finlly get started on this game.

Got digital version for PS4 when I bought the console (during lockdown) for about 6 quid, but wasnt the game of the year edition with any DLCs. Never got round to playing it, and now I'm gonna keep waiting til the ps5 version is ready.

There's a good chance the game might not be my cup of tea, so this kind of insight to help know when's a good time to decide is really handy

Yeah I've pushed on and had a big session last night.  Starting to enjoy it so much more already.

Still in White Orchard, but now I realise its basically a big tutorial area I'm really cool with it.

Just preparing to fight the Griffin by doing a few quests and levelling up a little bit (I'm Level 3 now), learning Alchemy and Crafting etc.

Are you making a particular build or just bunging your points into what you find most fun? And have you found the places of power in White Orchard yet?

Not really much of a spoiler but
Spoiler
when you get into the DLC I read it expands further and you can really build a kick ass Geralt.

In regards to my points.  I'm just spreading the love across all the categories at the moment.  I've found one place of power but don't really know what to do there.

Does the DLC kick in from the start or sometime during the main story?

Crafted myself a couple of grapeshot bombs and a nice piece of chest armour and pretty much dispatched of the Griffin with no real worries :)

Yeah first H&S quest became available when I arrived in Velen.  Recommends level 33 though!!  I'm level 3 so may be a while before I play it. :)

Just checked and it seems to already be set to "alternative" movement from install mate. I defo haven't changed it.

Just acquired "Gourmet".  Definitely useful.

Bloody hell just had a game of Gwent against a woman in Velen and I didn't stand a chance

She was using the "Monsters" deck with loads of Hero cards and special ability cards

Am i right in assuming I need to find more cards for my Northern Realms deck to make my deck more powerful?

Gwent? Now we’re talking! That is have to say is one of my specialist subjects,

There’s a mission later on in Novigrad which is particularly tricky where you have to win 3 games in a row against very good players. One of my prouder moments was winning that first time. Gutted when I started NG+ and realised they’d taken my deck away from me

I can't remember to be honest. I'd gotten quite good by then. I feel like I may have won the first two, then lost the third but just rolled with it.

I had to uninstall it off my Xbox last night, it was too tempting to play againt but I need to wait for the next gen version

Guys

OK mate, to start, you'll want the minimum number of regular unit cards allowed (22 I think).  Select your strongest 22 for your deck and discard the others, that way when the cards are randomly drawn at the beginning of a gwent game you won't end up with a weaker hand.  A strong deck for a particular faction (i.e Northern Realms) will have around 30 cards in total with a unit strength of 120+ .  Hope that helps.

Helps immensely. Cheers mate

Won the Red Baron's special card from him last night.  He was playing with the Northern Realms deck too same as me.

Its when I run up against someone playing with a Monsters or Nilfgaardian deck when I get my ass handed to me

Don't get me wrong. I know I have to collect more and better cards from around the Witcher world.  Every time i see one for sale at store i buy it now. :)

Could never get into Gwent myself, and I'm ashamed of that.

no nor me. but having said that I've never really been one for mini-games in general. many rpgs etc have one but I'll usually play the one a game makes you play as a tutorial and maybe one more, but that does for me.

You need to give Gwent a proper go, that's my experience anyway. Seems a bit meh at first but once you start accumulating your cards and that it's a decent game.

The thing about Gwent is that it is clearly a well made (mini-)game. Otherweise, people wouldn't be playing it so much and it wouldn't have become as popular as it did. That said, I'm with voodoo ray. I'm not that big a fan of those games inside games that I spend hours playing them. I'll do what's needed and then just get on with the proper game. With Gwent I had an additional issue and that was having to look for cards and that's my other pet peeve in games. I just cannot be arsed looking everywhere for stuff to complete a collection or in the case of Gwent to get more cards. I just feel it's a waste of time. And again, I know I'm in a minority there, because clearly modern games also have a lot of stuff for completionists. I just don't care about whether I've done 100 percent of a game, when 40 of those 100 percent consist of doing boring stuff like running through the world picking up special items or getting achievements where you have to do stuff a certain way.

I think I spent more time playing dominoes on RDR2 than doing missions.....  :-[
