I loved him as a player but he is a man with an awful high opinion of himself.

just finished watching Jeff Stellings interview with him and you would swear he was the greatest player in history they way he talks about himself.

He had great ability as a player, scored many quality goals but he didnt have the mentality or the bottle to play at the top level.

All well and good wondering why Gareth Southgate didnt accept your offer to be a penalty coach when you never took a penalty of any real pressure or in a penalty shoot out. Its a totally different dynamic and one that Le Tissier never pitted himself against.

He comes across as someone with a chip on his shoulder also. I think its because he didnt get more chances with England. He got enough of them if i recall correctly and didnt take them because he didnt have the bottle to do it at that level under pressure.

Tbf he could do more than volley a ball but there was little to go with his ability. A luxury player with an extremely high opinion of himself as he reflects back on his career. There were many many other players like him.

I was once told that in pressure situations, it can help to be really dumb because stupid people are too stupid to feel pressure (as in they aren't smart enough to think of consequences if something doesn't go well). Probably applies to Le Tissier and penalties more than any other example in existence.

Yeah I've always thought you have to be stupid and/or arrogant to be a successful penalty taker.

I used to take them for my Sunday League team btw.

A certain John Barnes was 10 times as skilful, and worked his socks off for the team.
Luis Suarez wasn’t bad either.
All of the above could destroy you, and Digger in his pomp did it week in week out, and all of them didn’t stand around like one of Lewis’ waiting for their team mates to do the graft.

He was a very stylish and unusual footballer. He kind of floated around in an era of heavy hitting tacklers. Shades of Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh, Gascoigne, even (just) a hint of Georgie Best. I like the way he wanted to be a one-club man too. I'm impervious to the attractions of playing for England so couldn't care less. His opinions around a certain medical product, recently heavily incentivised, are quite sound in my opinion. It's a brave thing he did to speak out about it. The same with the virtue signalling and Sky Sports demands around wearing/ not wearing certain badges. The rare times I've heard him being interviewed I found him entertaining and I enjoy the way he speaks his mind. He does like himself mind !
What would life be like if we all agreed with everyone on everything ? He's a maverick on and off the field it seems.
