Liverpool MD Ian Ayre today travelled to Barcelona to open talks with Pere Guardiola over a possible new deal for Luis Suarez.

Sorry off topic but what exactly did Ian Ayre  do in the past to make everyone call him a massive tool?

He was employed by G&H, which made people a bit suspicious. He was one of the people who got them out of the club though, so there's that.
He transformed the commercial side of the club, delivering several new stores, record sponsorship deals and generally raising our game financially in areas where we had struggled since the mid-80s.
He rides a motorbike. Some people don't like that. He does interviews. Some people don't like that.

According to some, he wasn't as supportive of Kenny as he could have been. No idea how true that is, but can see why that would upset people if it was the case. Obviously Kenny is far too much of a gent to ever say anything of that sort.

A lot of it is also a hang-over from Purslow and Parry, I think.

I think the main thing is not to repeat last summer's saga. A condition will obviously be put in that will allow him to leave if CL football is not obtained, and there will be a proper release clause with it.

It appears to just be discussions for now. The kicker is CL, it doesn't really matter how much we increase his wages by.

Perhaps. Suarez has said his deal goes to 2018. These same outlets have reported the same in the past. Now that it's time for more Suarez transfer drama, it's back to 2016 again. Maybe the mythical release clause will make a return too. Perhaps I'm naive, but it seems like the media just makes this shit up when it's time to generate page views and FSG's response to last summer would suggest time was very much on our side.
Any evidence of this? You're fighting a bit of a lonely battle here - everything I and everyone bar you has seen seems to indicate his contract goes until 2016. All through last summer for instance, it was reported that we could take the relaxed view and refuse to sell him because he had 3 years left on the deal he'd signed in 2012.

Was under the impression they started sniffing in the summer but didn't value him above £30m so we told them to piss off. Could be wrong though

This is the only rumours you should listen to mate.

He said last year that he never wanted to leave either and would be playing for us this year and he pushed for a transfer in the summer. Players lie all the time and i'm not going to believe him. I don't think we would sell him mid season, but I wouldn't trust him saying he doesn't want to leave in Jan.

Here is the original interview. This interview was quoted by BBC, Times, etc. at the time when they were going on about a transfer to Bayern. Both the Guardian and Telegraph have subsequently reported a 2018 end date. I don't know where transfermarkt gets their data, but they also list 2018 as the end date.

OK, so Suarez signed in 2011 on a contract lasting until 2016. Then, in 2012, he signs a new contract. But if we didn't extend the contract beyond 2016 then, what was the point of that new contract? FSG don't seem like the type who would give away money with nothing in exchange.

He was making 30k per week. They brought him up to a much better deal which is still arguable meager compared to his peers. Nothing controversial about that.

Right, so Guardian and Telegraph are both just quoting Marca. I can see now why you thought his contract went to 2018, but I think Marca just got it wrong (it could even be that Suarez got the date wrong when he talked to them; it may not have been Marca's error.)

Hmm, it all comes from a radio interview quoted by Marca, I think it's just been mis-heard/translated/quoted. All of the Liverpool journos over the summer seemed to be saying 2016 so i'd still go with that

Aye, the only box office player in the prem.

That's a bit of a stretch with aguero lighting it up and players like Ozil, yaya, hazard etc. Although the majority of very top players (bale, Ronaldo, messi, Ribery, zlatan) play abroad I think this league has the most top players in terms of recognisable household players, when taking into account the opinion on the continent/rest of the world.

Anyone know if Gerrard has a clause à la "match the best paid player at the club" in his contract?

Just give him whatever he asks.

Contract through to 2018 at the very least, ideally 2019. 180-200k. Get out clause of 80 million quid if we fail to make CL.

Fair for all parties methinks.

Looks like there some discussion of Agger and Suarez for Messi but FSG want to see Messi back on the pitch first.

Naaaah its a new contract silly. and its looking good early, only 18 months to go till we wrap it up. slam dunk. When he signs that 5 year puppy we should get a huge banner of the signature page behind a plane and buzz White Hart Lane. Fly a copy of llamelas  transfer fee fax behind it right past Levys seat on game day. This would clearly be a situation where the use of drones could be condoned.

Very positive and encouraging for youngsters to hear that, but surely that could only happen in a cup game, against lower tier teams. I doubt he'd even get a nod vs Oldham but maybe as a sub. That said just being on the bench for any game would be pretty motivating for a 16year old

Great stuff, get it done early so that the chances of losing him to an English club (City) in his prime are zero. Hopefully he signs and we get Champions League so we can build a dynasty around him.
Then in the midddle out pops a smiling glen johnson pulling up his jersey to reveal a t-shirt of suarez with a text saying. "OUR SUAREZ IS A FRIEND TO ALL COLOURS!"
