Robbie Keane debuted as interim player/manager of Atletico de Kolkata, and scored the winning goal.

Robbie Keane: Republic of Ireland record goalscorer retires as a player

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has announced his retirement from professional football.

Keane, 38, scored a record 68 goals in 146 international appearances and was recently named as part of new Republic manager Mick McCarthy's backroom team.

The former Republic captain scored 325 goals in 737 appearances for 10 clubs during a 23-year playing career.

Keane retired from international football in 2016.

"Today, after 23 wonderful years, I am formally announcing my retirement as a professional footballer," Keane said in a statement.

"From Crumlin United around the world to the likes of Milan, London and Los Angeles, I could never have imagined the path my football life would take.

"It has exceeded all the hopes I had as a football-mad boy growing up in Dublin."

"Leaving home at 15 years of age to pursue my professional career in England seems a lifetime ago now. I was a street footballer full of hope armed with huge ambitions and a determination to succeed.

"All I needed was that one chance. I would like to pay a special thanks to Wolverhampton Wanderers for believing in me and giving me that chance."

He enjoyed two successful spells as a player with Spurs, and his other clubs included Inter Milan. Leeds United, Liverpool, Celtic (on loan) and LA Galaxy.

"From Wolves, my professional career followed a path that took me far and wide, giving my family and I the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people and experience several different countries and cultures.

"I have always wanted to test myself and strive to be the best that I could be, so I embraced new challenges be it at Coventry City, Inter Milan, Leeds United and then possibly the most successful period of my club football career with Tottenham Hotspur.

"I had the great privilege to represent and captain Tottenham over 238 games. I had many wonderful times there and I will look back on my days at White Hart Lane with great fondness. The club will always hold a special place in my heart.

"There were shorter times spent at Glasgow Celtic and Liverpool, two truly iconic global institutions, and then West Ham United, before Los Angeles became our home away from home. We spent five hugely successful and rewarding years, both on and off the field, with LA Galaxy.

"After a spell with Aston Villa, my playing career concluded with an exciting few months with ATK, a club which also gave me my first experience of management.

"Playing and captaining my country has been the highlight of my career. I enjoyed every moment of the most incredible journey with the Ireland team over an 18-year period and as I have said many times before, words cannot express how proud I am to be Irish. I hope I have made the fans proud wearing the green jersey and armband.

Ignoring his spell with us he’s had a very decent career.

I’d forgotten how highly rated he was at Wolves and his move to Coventry at the time was quite sensible. Did his stint at Inter help or hinder him?

Felt like he cane back to england at Leeds and was still on a decent career trajectory. His spells at Spurs either side of us were a bit of a step down at that time and he kind of excelled as a bigger fish in a smaller pond. He and Berbatov were a more than handy partnership.

Should we have held on to him for the rest of the 08/09 season? After a very slow start he had started to score more regularly and although not really fitting in to how we played we’d still have played him a fair bit after January with the regular absences Torres and Gerrard had.

That said our results picked up in the second half so wouldn’t necessarily have affected how the title race panned out.

Would be interesting to see what others think without slagging him too much for his stint here!

I've often thought we probably would have won the title if he stayed the whole season.  Our lack of squad depth is what done us that year, and he was a handy forward.

I've always wondered what the deal was between us and Keane, why we sold him back etc.  I know Rafa didn't want him here in the first place.

I always thought he was a decent player, maybe not world class, but good enough.  Signed him as a 16 year old from Wolves on Champ Manager back in the day.

Our squad depth was fine that year. What we lacked was a killer striker and Keane missed so many sitters that should have turned some of the draws we had early in the season into wins. I was glad to see him go and our team did much better without him in the second half of the season.

you mean a killer striker that could stay healthy right? Torres was a killer and half striker.  Or you mean a backup/complementary killer striker?

Nothing against Keane, but that´s just such nonsense. He didn´t fit in, we improved after he was sold. Our second half of that season was like the 13/14 run-in, ridiculously and improbably good even if it didn´t ultimately land us the title.

One of the most disappointing signings in recent times (I know it's a decade but...) not because he perfomed terribly but because spending that money on almost any other 18m rated forward would've likely won us the league.
Football without fans is nothing.

We've won 18 titles, 5 European Cups, 7 FA Cups, but today must be the greatest victory of all.

My Brother-in-law has just done a great podcast/show with Robbie Keane (discusses moving to Wolves instead of Liverpool at 16) follows on from an actually ace one with Christian Vieri the week before.

Christian Vieri - I think you forget what an amzing journey he's had. Great interview too (I know I'm biased on this front) but they used to work together and so its a really honest and straight chat. Very cool.
