Completely before my time, but he always seemed a decent sort when I saw him being interviewed about his playing career. Sad that another legend from our golden age has died.

Just out of interest, why was he called 'The Doc'? Just because of his surname?

I only know this as I read that Souness paid tribute to him on the ITV World Cup coverage this afternoon. He explained it was because he used to carry a medicine bag with him with remedies for hangovers etc so his fellow players would often seek out the doc

Souness made him sound like a much valued and cherished friend and team mate

RIP Davie.

He loved playing for Liverpool and we loved him. All great forwards have ice in their veins they say. Davie Johnson epitomised that. Never flustered and an absolute killer in the penalty box.

Used to love watching him play he will be missed. As Souness said on TV he was very well liked in the dressing room. We have been blessed with some brilliant strikers who were also very nice people. RIP David

Sad news. That’s no age these days. RIP.

He was a very good player indeed, who arguably did not quite receive the credit he should have done, as he was sandwiched between two eras represented by Keegan/Toshack and Dalglish/Rush. Those who saw him know what’s what. Very good player indeed who will be sorely missed.
